In this area people have different views, and definitions can be broad. However, I do feel that porn stereotypes has shaped how a lot of people see and define BDSM and kink.
People self define themselves as dom,switch or sub, but they don't explain what they mean when they apply the term dom, switch or sub, as the terms are broad.
My understanding is that merely being assertive, or ripped, toned and confident inside or outside the bedroom does not make a person "a Dominant". In the same way merely being available for sex or following the lead of a confident person to have sex does not make someone 'a submissive'.
There is a view that where arousal and sex is the goal this is hedonistic behaviour, which falls into the category of bedroom bondage or sexual kink. The aim of the play is arousal that will end in sex, and not for the innate pleasure those roles bring without sex.
Clearly there is nothing wrong with sex play. But I would suggest clarity is needed. As some people use "dominant and submissive" where people seek a power exchange relationship where the goal is a relationship. They don't want multiple random sexual relationships and see a D/s relationship as special.
To aid clarity stating whether someone is a "pleasure dom/sub" or a "power exchange dom/sub" would help.
Additionally the doms should state their skills. Are they handy with whips rope, floggers,wax etc.
I am not saying being a pleasure dom/sub is better than being a power exchange dom/sub, I am just saying they are different experiences and clarity helps set expectations.

I've never really been sure what defines a genuine dom, but I'll have a go here at saying what I think. At least something that I think should be a core part of it.
I've always thought that one of the biggest things you are doing as a dom is exploring your sub's desires: get inside their head; find out what makes them tick; find their most deep seated wants and needs which cannot be satisfied within normal sex.
And then you give them those experiences. You make them feel exactly the way that they want and need and crave.
There's more: about how easy or hard this might be to do, or about how well your desires as a dom match your sub's; skills and equipment and knowledge. Or a dozen other things. But I think I would put that one thing above at the core.
Anyway, to bring this around to the comment I'm responding to - no I don't think the kind of selfish prats you're describing are good doms at all. They're like the polar opposite of that core principle. |
