"I tend to zone it out now.
It is rather over used though.
Agreed , it irritates me now"
I get slightly irritated when it's used inappropriately. For instance someone will ask a fairly serious question in the forum but add "lol" or my new minor bug bear "he he". I interpret it as a nervous laugh. |

Oh lol, I haven't have I. No, I most definitely do NOT laugh out loud when I read or type lol.
I did laugh out loud last night when Mr N and I were chatting about stuff though. |

I use it to convey tone, tone can’t be heard via txt and can be taken wrongly, to me it shows a lighter tone and/or mood, I agree it is over used but so are emojis and they can be used in the same way, for example if someone was being sarcastic on a forum, regulars know who’s going to speak like that but newbies don’t have a way to know that, adding a lol in there can show that and help stop threads being sidetracked into an argument with the original point being forgotten about, we’ve all seen that happen a few times, sometimes that can work well, others it can just lead to arguments and upset
Just my opinion lol

I would guess none, but think is we are to ban anything it should be the letter E, so over used |

I have a totally () reading some forum threads and often
However I believe that the non-paying members can't use emojis here, so revert to the Lol's.
What's far worse is when you tell someone something funny, in real life and they respond "Oh lol" !!!
I've warned them that it's for text, not life and they'd likely be bruised if they continued, then showed them my phone with |

"Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaassssss!!!
Loathe it. Massive turn off
Crikey, I only send a couple of ee's and aa's, cos I'm tight like that "
Yeah but it's the texting that to them when they're fucking you that pisses them off |

I think the odd lol here and there is OK. A lot of people do overuse it though and I've probably been guilty of that myself before. People are starting to use emojis instead. Don't seem to see "lmao" and such as ten or so years ago. |

On a side note people say things in every day conversation that don’t make it into messaging (not as often as the acronyms you’re discussing).
Words like ‘innit’. It makes me chuckle when i hear it used to the point where it is tagged on to the end of any sentence. ‘Hey Trish, you have to see that new period drama on BBC1, starts on Friday at 9pm innit!’
Notoriously overused in the Southwest where i come from! Not sure about other areas of the country.
My ex used to deploy the word innit and it became a running joke for years. She wouldnt change her mind even when i showed that it was perfectly legit and has it’s own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary, which made me laugh (not out loud) when i first discovered that!!

It doesn't bother me at all when i see lol written. In fact i often do lol as im a very happy person and frequently smile, giggle, laugh. To me it's no different to seeing put in messeges.
One thing i do dislike is people putting innit in messeges or fake regional words.
Thankfully though we are all different and write and like different things. |

Nope... it conveys playfulness and lightheartedness in a quick, simple, universally understood manner. Something which is very important on a public forum where facial expressions and cues can not be read! |

You can't ban the letter E, as Everything starts with an E Lol. |

Would it be the lol police?"
Gosh this tickled me. Had me guffawing, He he ing, LOLing and PMSL. Not sure why. I can just imagine the chuckle brothers being the chief superintendents at the trial.
Gotcha.... we've got you banged to rights Mr Chap for mocking the LOL police in an inappropriate way. We sentence you to 1 hour with Ken Dodd and his tickling stick.

Just after reading my own message and i spat my coffee out.
Not because i thought it funny.
My coffee is too fukin hot.
Hahahahahahahahaha
LOL "
Me too. I have no idea why though.
I keep thinking of a room at GCHQ with a COBRA meeting convened. Everyone shhhhhh. This is a serious matter. There is far too much LOLing and it has to be stamped out. We will start monitoring all internet traffic and apply filters to turn LOLing off. No one will have a clue any more and in future will have to decide if to smile or not. Can you imagine the chaos this would create. |

I am guilty of overuse of LOL but as someone else said in the thread too, it’s more about conveying tone and making it clear it’s a jokey type response. Sometimes I’ll use a winky emoji instead. Sometimes I use hahaha on the end instead - not quite the nervous laugh |

It's those Americans that introduced it in my opinion. It's like when you greet someone everyone now says Hay instead of Hi. What's all that about ?
If I wanted to gnosh on some dry grass I would have made pretty sure I'd got some of my own thankyou.
Far too much breaking bad talk going on. tut tut tut. It's just not British. |

I think it should be replaced with 'Ha' for a sarcastic or ironic laugh or 'hee hee' to mean a roll around the floor, side splitting belly laugh.
Lol,pmsl and lmfao should be banned completely and never even spoken of again. Ha! |

Nope, while not literally accurate to what you're doing while reading/ typing, it's definitely got a place to convey a feeling to a message; helping to reduce any serious tones for instance

I think I am hysterical so sometimes I am laughing at what I have said. Other times I'm merely amused.
What really grates on my brain though is llf (laugh like f*ck). I think it must be just a Belfast thing & it makes me cringe. |

I remember a friend telling me his mum put lol at the end of a message telling him an auntie had died. When he asked why she had put lol on that message as he thought it was in bad taste and not her style . She was confused and said why wouldn't she say Lots Of Love... she was mortified when he replied what it also stood for and that actually it explained the frosty reaction she had had from some people .. and hurriedly had to text everyone she had messaged to tell them that she wasn't laughing at the news this woman had died ...luckily everyone was okay once it had been explained |

I can't stop thinking about the LOL police doing a bust.
It just keeps tickling my funny bone and making me smile about banning the LOL at the end of people's sentences.
What would be the penalty for transgressing it ? |

It's OK, with a name like that they would be too busy raiding themselves to get out of the station |
