I remember as a student I got my first video recorder from Radio Rentals!
And used to hire videos (and latterly DVDs) from my local Blockbuster.
And, as you mentioned it, surely Woolies was the King of pick and mix! |

Woolies definitely,
Pick up a single, some stick on souls and blakeis to make your shoes last longer, a quick whiz round the pick and mix, and you're Saturday shopping done! (When you were 13 ) |

"Tammy girl and Andy's records x"
Was Andy's Records national, or just a East Anglian thing? Andys Records was the best place to get music t-shirts.
I also remember Athena being a bookshop, before it just sold posters (before closing down). |

Tammy girl, mum used to be downstairs in etam and I'd be upstairs in the girls clothes. Woolworths, even BHS where I used to get my global hyper colour t shirts, they'd actually be handy now for the gym so I could see if I'm sweating enough! |

I definitely miss going to Blockbuster Video when I was a kid or BV as I used to call it.
What I miss about BV is renting games there but the lovely smell the place has when you enter is what I'll miss most of all. |

I can still remember chocolate vending machines on the platforms of tube stations. Though 9 times out of 10 they'd take your money and not give you anything in return |

Not sure it was a chain but Take Six had a few shops. Wardour Street London was THE place to get clothes. Made to measure Mohair suits for silly money ...
Childhood memories of the original Woolworths in Cornmarket Street Oxford that had creaky wood floors .... |

C&A for the hat dept...used to love trying them all on as a kid.

"More (some slightly obscure): Home & Colonial, Irwins, Dewhursts, Lewis's (Liverpool), C & A, MacFisheries, Dixons, Jessops"
My first job was as a Saturday girl in Dewhursts. I worked there from age 13 and when I quit my A levels aged 17 I asked them to take me on full time as an apprentice butcher. They said no, girls can’t train as a butcher it’s a mans job. Being a gobby little cow I told em to stick their Saturday job where the sun don’t shine

"Woolworths I miss, used to get all my record singles in there.
"
I bought my first ever single in Woolies, David Essex it was. Very small me asked the lady "Hold Me Close, please", and she came round the counter and gave me a hug.
I was too young to remember but it's the sort of story my mum loves to tell |

C&A is still going in most of mainland Europe.
United Colours of Benetton is common there too.
What I miss is not a chain but a type of shop. A proper, old school, car accessory shop.
Many an hour spent in my yoof in the local ones and that’s only 15 years ago. |

"Victoria Winesoff licences have become a thing of the past
Outdoors.....anyone remember those, attached to a Pub or Brewery.... "
Remember the one attached to the Golden Cross pub in Harborne from when Inwas a child.
Coming from an Irish family would often be sent down to fetch them some Sherry off the wood as they called it
No one batted an eyelid about serving us back then either. |
