Hiding in the shadows

I've been ill, chest infection.

Just back from the gym, first time in 3wks.

I was pathetic!

Couldn't lift a third my normal weights.

Not happy

What gains is the OP talking about?

There is a picture from yesterday and a picture from November 2017. There are no gains compared with 2017, if anything, there is slightly less tone!

The only exercise I believe in is bench press.

Bench press 6 days a week then rest on Sunday. No other exercises required.

It’s the ultimate full body work out and all you ever need.

What’s everyone benching?

6 days a week is unnecessary and too much. And as with any exercise your body will soon adapt to it and the gains will stop anyway.

He’s right in the respect that most people wouldn’t train hard enough to come close to over training..

Over training would come when your hitting 2 very hard sessions a day. Combing strength and cardio and not taking adequate rest..

That’s not obtainable for 90% of the population

Balls. When I was young and started out I thought more was better. 2 hour workouts 4 times a week. Was too much. It's generally accepted in the world of bodybuilding that 1 hour workouts 3-4 times a week is plenty enough to make good gains as a natural. Obviously if you're taking steroids you can train more as they dramatically increase recovery.

Overtraining is one of the most common mistakes.

They increase muscular recovery dramatically, what they don't do is help CNS recovery, very easy to overtrain on gear.

CNS fatigue is horrible, I had it in late 2016 and took me a few months to get back to normal.

I'm a Personal Trainer so I'm in the gym most days! Love training, throwing weights around makes me feel calmer somehow. I do the odd bit of cardio but it sucks.. hard!

I don't lift anything too impressive really..

100kg deadlifts,

220kg-240kg plate leg press,

16kgx2 DB shoulder press,

Haven't squatted in a while but think it's about 90kg.

Eve. x

It is enough for a lot of people. Especially if you're not a teenager as recovery rate falls as you age. It depends also on how you split it up. If you're hitting a body part hard more than twice a week then that's gonna hurt you. Legs are gonna take longer to recover than say biceps obviously.

Nutrition and sleep are obviously the other very important things and play a huge role in recovery and gains.

Hmmm, maybe 3-4 1 hour sessions if your training like Arnie. If your training like 90% of people out there its not enough

Ok you win. 95% will never get near overtraining though

220kg-240kg plate leg press,

16kgx2 DB shoulder press,

Haven't squatted in a while but think it's about 90kg.

This is true. I managed it for a short while and it took

6 days a week lifting weights with c ompound lifts followed by accessories to muscular failure.

+ 2 X rugby pre season sessions per week

+ Another hiit session

And running a calorie deficit for 6 weeks.

I felt like death. Do not recommend.

I see a PT twice a week at the moment. We tend to do strength or cardio in a session, but mid range strength (10-15 reps, I forget what it's called. Sometimes we'll do 15-20 to focus on the cardio in lifting). Sort of combination rehab (my PT also has an associated qualification and has built on my NHS physio programme) and rebuilding after several months away. I can occasionally leg press (on the plate sled type thing) north of 100kg, which isn't where I was, but given the severity of my injury he says I'm doing really well.

"The only exercise I believe in is bench press.

"

All you need to be a fully qualified gym trainer, read a few articles, get a degree in bro science and go to the gym 3 times.

Then get online and dish out advice to people who's lifestyle and history you absolutely nothing about.

I feel like I've taken a weird step step into bodybuilding.com in this thread, or even UK muscle, lol.

I think it's a tool like any other, which can be used well or badly (I'm not saying anyone here is using it so, I'm not qualified to pass judgement). It can also be a hobby, passion, or vocation.

Really? I go to the gym two or three times a week as well as mountain biking, hiking and yomping around with the army. And even if the gym is an "excuse", at least people are going rather than sitting on their fat arses shovelling junk food down in front of the TV.

Tbh the only advice I think most people should give re the gym online (some people here don't qualify as most people) is, if in doubt, ask for help in person. And if you have any specific health complaints, consider getting medical clearance before taking on specific activity.

The gym is a safe, climate controlled, dry place where I can get advice about pushing my limits, and there are people around to help if I hurt myself. No way in hell would I push myself the way I do without some form of support around me.

This is the ultimate full body workout as everyone knows bench press trains every muscle group for a well rounded physique.

Monday = International chest day

Tues = Bench press (1hour)

Wed = Bench press (2hour)

Thurs = Bench press (3hour)

Fri = Bench press (4hour)

Sat = Bench press x2 (25hours)

Sun = Zumba

It's aimed at anybody giving advice to people they don't know anything about. It's ridiculous and potentially dangerous, but somebody giving bodybuilding advice very clearly from the basis of nothing but second or third hand knowledge is quite crazy.

Abs are irrelevant to understanding anything about weight training.

Hefty Hideaway

I gym at least 4 times a week. Classes, cardio and when I can get anywhere near them - weights. My personal trainer is awesome and is great at pushing me but I still haven’t gained any muscle tone. I’m absolutely shite. I’m persevering but damn it’s soul sucking pushing my body to breaking point and not improving.

Well done on your gains. Don’t mind me crying on the yoga mat.

Well I don't really train these days, had to stop for medical reasons then my priorities in life changed and I didn't really go back to it properly but I was totally obsessed when I was younger. Started at 16 and went from a skinny 10½ stone to 14 stone by 19. Made some classic mistakes when starting out, like 2 hour workouts and mistakes with my diet but learned quickly and soaked up as much knowledge as I could. Don't have the physique I used to but still have the stretch marks as a reminder lol.
