Struggling to get STI test kit

Cambridge (She/They And They/Them)

Hi all

Is anyone else struggling to get a postal STI test kit?

Our local service requires you to order the kit online but, no matter what time of day, it says they have already allocated all the kits for the day and to try again tomorrow.

Anyone else encountering problems?

Dee

I guess it's a postcode lottery.

Ordered my regular home testing kit yesterday on SH:UK and it'll be here in a couple of days.

It took me three weeks of trying at 7am every morning. Eventually I go lucky. But it arrived the following week whilst I was away. The day after it arrived I was getting txts telling me I needed to take the test asap and return it! I got home and sent it immediately. All negative. I'll go through the same routine in 3 months.

I’ve been fortunate when I have ordered one that they have come quickly. However I know that locally when I tried to order one from SH24 they’d stopped in my area. Fortunately through local NHS there are still services available so o don’t know if maybe checking under local NHS services may help people waiting for one?

I've never had a problem with SH:24. Always arrives within a couple of days of ordering online.

I'm not sure how it could be a postcode lottery or localised problem as the kits come from, and are returned to, a central UK location

I always find them quite easy to get hold of, if they've all been allocated I just go back on just after midnight and usually get one sent quickly

Jeez, and they wonder why STI’s are on the increase.

I find it’s easier to go straight to the clinic.

The nurse there told me, you can only get 2 kits a year, which is appalling.

Because SH:24 don't cover the whole country, only certain areas.

I had exactly the same trouble. Anyway I gave them a ring to order a kit as it wouldn't allow me to order a kit.

Kit finally arrives so do the normal and send it off. Get the text to say I'm able to check my results. Try to log in and it won't allow me to. Changed passwords ect.

Long story short the people that used to do the express kits/results has been taken over by a different company

They’re not available in my area. It sucks that it’s not available in certain postcodes. The websites direct me to payable testing services called ‘Fettle’, ‘Test Me’ or the nearest sexual health clinic, which is only open office hours, so I would have to take time off work.

this is misinformation - blood tests cannot check for localised parasitic, viral and bacterial, infections such as chlamydia, Trichomoniasis, Gonorrhoea etc.

Yes syph, hiv, hepatitis etc is checked. But it’s not the full picture.

I don't have a penis, hopefully someone who does can answer the penis-specific part of your question, but I presume there would be some sort of penis swabbing required. In my kit I get a throat swab, vaginal swab, anal swab, and a blood collection tube. I've said swab too much and now it doesn't look like a real word any more.

"LOL thanks wonderwoman.

It’s a urine sample only - no probing!

The sample needs to be of the first squirt of urine and not having peed for at least an hour beforehand, the idea being that the bacterial / viral markers they are testing for will be most concentrated in this sample. The full suite is additionally a throat swab (true test of gag reflex), anal swab (only relevant if you have received anal sex) and blood test (top tip hot shower, middle finger prick and learn how to ‘milk’ your finger for the amount of blood needed with a pull and squeeze).

The kit I use includes:

Urine sample

Throat swab

Anal swab

Blood sample

Mrs WW kit swaps the urine sample for vaginal swab

There’s a whole load of kits available so you need to make sure it meets yours (others) requirement.

Some kits test for gonnorhea and chlamydia only by urine test. This test wouldn’t pick up the virus in your throat or rectum, that’s what the swabs are for

I had no such issues getting mine. But just be aware that you need to fill the blood collection vial past the line. In order for the lab to have enough specimen to carry out an HIV test!

I did not give them enough and had to get another test kit posted to me to complete that part of the profile testing.

You can try the knock-on-the-door approach and explain how the website option has failed. Tell them you struggle with getting the blood out.

I did this and got sorted, tested and stabbed.

The kits aren't free in our area either so booked a test at our local gu clinic. The consultation was around 20 mins. The staff were very professional, a Doc asked a few questions, we were honest and explained we were active swingers , the test results came via text a few days later . Very discreet service so we go twice a year just to be on the safe side.

You would think this is something that clubs would organise with the local GU clinic. My local does this every month and you don't have to pay an entrance fee if you've just come for a check up and leave immediately after you've finished.

I use SH-UK too but I think they limit how many times you can test per month.

Last time my kit didn't even allow for a blood sample so no test for HIV!!!

I think the service might have been farmed out to a private company.

For any serious adult filming meets I use Dean Street Express in London.

A bit of a pain getting there but at least they do full screening and provide test certificates on request.

There is no free home tests kits service in North Devon.

And after seeing how badly people were doing covid test kits, I personally don't trust people to do home STD tests correctly.

Also by going to the clinic you get your vaccinations done for free for some std.

Do your test results texts state which tests you're clear for?

I just have in clinic tests but mine just send a blanket results saying all is good. But without stating which tests have been taken. A friend in a different area gets individual results, with fine measurements, such as kidney data, in full.

Obviously changing it costs money and budgets are limited

My clinic does do the all clear text, but call me about my kidney data. When they get the results and book me in for the next tests accordingly. As I did have to go a bit more often when my kidney function was low.

I would advise being careful with the postal kits I got a false positive once (i had no symptoms either), so i went to the clinic and got retested twice and it was negative both times!!!

Personally I would go straight to the clinic, I think you get a better standard of service and you can have a visual check of your parts (if required) _emember there are things like warts and herpes that may need checking up visually which you can't test for using a homekit

Why don't you do what I do go to your local sexual health clinic ? , look up your area on the NHS web site , because if even if you do manage to order a kit , it will take five days to get to you then another ten days to get the result , if you go to a clinic direct it takes ten days max to get the results , I hope that helps .

Our nearest clinic never reopened after covid. And our GP doesn't do testing.

So it means booking a day of holiday to travel 50+ miles for an appointment, there are no walk in allowed

I use the home test kit but would much prefer done by a professional.

Because it is so hard to get access to a test, there will be many who just don't bother.

Why don’t you just go to your local STD clinic, it’s free, anonymous and they give full sexual health check ups as well as testing for other conditions or offering benefits.

We both get tested every 3 months, kidney and liver checks included, plus over the last few years vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B, also Monkeypox plus Diptheria, Polio and Tetanus top ups.

Free condoms, lube and 3 monthly prescription for PrEP.

Like many we both prefer bare back so it’s important to keep on top of our sexual health.

In Leeds you can only get online test kits if you're under 24. You can't walk in to the clinic. You have to phone for an appointment and the line permanently says they are busy then cut you off. The only way I got a test was asking my GP for an email contact.

I actually said a few years ago that the site should have a forum section (could use the virus one now)

For all things sexual health and links to services.

People poo pooed the idea moaning about various things including privacy.

Well if you play away you need to be more responsible.

I also think the site has a responsibility to include access to information and services.

Did you mean that it's lucky that they do inform your GP? With certain things, such as the Smallpox vaccines that were provided to LGBT clients, they wanted details to be provided to the rest of the NHS, including GPs, such as at mine. I generally prefer sexual health data to stay separate and completely private. I was unsure of Derbyshire s policy and had almost got to use them a couple of years ago.
