most fundamental aspects |
The volleyball scene was never meant to be part of the film. Investors complained that they had paid for buff actors - some of whom had been male underwear models and hardly acted before. Tony Scott then promptly ordered lots of truck loads of sand to be dumped where they’d been doing some other scene and started filming.
It’s a bloke’s film with males bonding as friends and looking out for each other.
No one ever suggests that The two main featured cell mates in Shawshank Redemption have anything other than a deep friendship and loyalty to each other. |

Top Gun was indeed a man film.
Fast Jets, carrier landings, the forming of real friendships (not love affairs) with other blokes in adversity.
