I struggle to get my head round watersports, particularly the "drinking right from the source" bit. I repect a lot of your comments on BDSM, and I am not derailing but providing tangential thoughts.
I really find no need to get my head around other people's kinks. Provided it is adults involved, it's genuinely consensual parties, no lasting harm is caused, and people who are not interested are not exposed to it, I have no concern,no matter how taboo or how much it sets off the squeamish.
I read an article years ago, about people getting their heads around things, is a way of making that behaviour acceptable and passable in the vanilla world. However, this has lead to gay pride marches in the States excluding BDSM and fetish wear as not being family friendly.
At the end I believe most kinksters don't want acceptance or tolerance, or to be considered,they want to be left alone to do their thing.

There are many kinks / fetishes that I don't understand, but if they are being done by consentual adults and it's Risk Aware Consentual Kink, then it's none of my business.
Equally, I'm sure that some of my BDSM play would be hard limits for many people (knives, medical, race, religion, waterboarding)

As someone who has a number of the kinks mentioned in this thread, what I've learned is that it is difficult to explain why you like them, you just do. Mine are interlinked even though there is no obvious way that they relate to each other.

Some interesting comments on this - especially the ones that suggest we don’t need to understand, or get our heads around a kink as it makes it more acceptable.
We have a slightly different take on this. There are certain kinks we have no desire to be involved in (our personal preferences, they do nothing for us and are therefore not for us), but there are some which we would like to understand what people do get from it, how it works for them - because if we don’t understand it, how can we rule them in or out?
So you could say that by educating ourselves, we can make an informed decision on whether something is or is not for us. |

I would entirely agree that getting educated on other people's kinks from a genuine, personal position, and not from a smug superior position is brilliant. With honest human contact most people will open up, and if they can explain why they enjoy it they would. I don't consider what I enjoy as kinks, more as dark hobbies because they are not for sexual purposes. If someone asks me about them and is genuine, I would happily talk to them for hours on the topics.

Thing with kinks and fetishes is they don't come out of nowhere. Something triggers them and it is usually from past experiences even if, on the face of it, they don't directly relate to the kink. The more extreme ones develop from tamer ones. |
