Are kids worse nowadays than they were a few years ago?
Youngest recently started high school and the way the kids speak to one another is unreal. Also just behaviour overall seems to have gone downhill. Or am I looking back with rose tinted glasses?
May be selling tickets for a fight in the school car park with a wee ned's Maw at this rate! |

I was out with a pal walking our dogs and a wee kid ran up to her 11 month old beagle as if he was going to pet him, kicked out at him and screamed at him before running away, needless to say the mother got a bollocking for allowing it to happen |

I coached kids for over 10 years and would say they are no worse than when we were growing up, but lets be honest todays society of adults hardly sets a good example to follow IMHO |

I have kid at school age and dreading when the leave primary to go to Academy. There is no respect now for adults. When i was younger every adult was Mr/Mrs ? and still to this day address them as that.
Kids having kids is what i see.
Too much sitting at home on screens and so many parents have no idea what their kids watching and who they are talking to.
Personally i will have shares in Clairol at this rate to cover all my grey and he isnt a teenager yet |

Good point.

I've noticed a difference in the behaviour of 16+ year olds over the last 10-15 years.
They see the way they behave as being normal because that is what the have been immersed in through their peers, society and the internet. I need to say it's not all of the kids I see but it is a large proportion of them.
We also need to remember our parents generation would have said the same thing about us, and me in particular.
They are pushing their boundaries, as we all did, but there is no excuse for being rude, ignorant and the total wee shites that some of them are. |

I was threatened by a 15 yo wielding a bat because i dared to tell him to shut up for being abusive to my 20 yo female pal, granted he shat himself big time because i wanted him to man up, drop the bat and settle it with our hands.

"I believe that children are a reflection on parents "
Was in a wee country hotel at the weekend, two separate functions on the afternoon, the kids were better behaved than the adults by the evening.
Difficult role models to learn from. |

Agree I don't think kids are any worse certainly glad I was a kid when I was no social media and the pressures it brings on them.
Yes there are some horrible cruel children but that was the same when I was there age as there are adults the same.

I think the biggest problem with kids is they are fully aware of their rights and protections but don't care about responsibilities, they don't even fear their parents.
If there is no punishement theirs nothing to deter them.

Kids are very little different than they ever have been.
Mobile phones and social media make the worst ones worse (a bit like their adult counterparts).
However something happened a couple of years back which has shifted the goalposts in a massive way.
Two years of Lockdown reversed the socialising progress some of the more challenging kids had made with one another, schools, there own learning and their wider communities and that goes from nursery age children right up to S4 and S5. The number of challenging pupils has grown exponentially. That ground that they missed during Lockdown cannot be caught up with and we are now dealing with a generation and a half where the usual group of challenging kids has grown five-fold and there are no extra resources or staffing for schools to support or deal with these extremely damaged and challenging young people.
Schools were never designed to put that kind of sh*t right. They always did what they could but schools are there to teach reading and writing. The rest is Society's inheritance.
I've worked with marginalised, excluded, challenging and difficult pupils for 30 years. What has been presented to schools since August 2021 (post-Covid nonsense) is unprecedented and unworkable. The range of challenging behaviours, nervous disorders, pupils requiring counselling, anxiety, incontinence and a basic inability to concentrate or sit at a desk, or phone home to see that "everything is alright" means some areas in schools now look like therapy centres.
I now work in Mainstream Secondary Education and typical new 1st Year classes now present with up to a third of pupils having Additional Support Needs, challenging behaviour, illiteracy, lack of basic numeracy, a complex range of medical/ neurological conditions... maybe even a thrilling combination of all of those!
This situation is now thrust at Mainstream Secondary (and Primary) Schools which are completely unable to muster or pay for the complex resources and staffing which is required. How on Earth 'normal' kids are expected to be taught in these conditions is beyond me and most of my colleagues.

Pretty sure each and every generation will have said this.
Its honestly a phrase I actively avoid.
I always say its their world and we are the auld fuckers trying to hold onto how we had and used it!
I would say that most of my generation molly coddled our kids far to much. which has caused alot of self indulgent brats.
But it is their world and they would be hard pushed to fuck it up as bad as we and those before us have

Kids are generally little buggers now. I'm sure you've all seen the change over the years. Here I thought my time at school was bad, it's even worse now in and outside of the playground. They also think they've got right of way pushing on to the bus when us adults are trying to get off. Little shits x |

To me there seems to be a sense of entitlement with kids these days.
To my memory, if you wanted something, whatever was the toy/gadget/thing you desired you had to earn it.
It appears that many modern kids just expect to get given it.

I can recall kids in my class and year being horrible to one another but don't recall older kids in S3 or S4 activity giving 1st yrs a hard time. They've only been at high school a few weeks ffs.

Absolutely spot on. The students I teach were in the early part of secondary education at the start of lockdown and haven't had the discipline of school but rather the indiscipline of being at home and doing what the like. This will take a few years to work out the system but in general most behaviour is the same but we unfortunately focus on those few who are misbehaving and not the majority that do behave |

I think it's just natural progression, the next generation is worse than the last one.
It's been that way for decades.
Blame the parents springs to mind |

Agree with this. The anonymity affords people a certain safety & security. Some will say things they'd never dream of saying to someone's face. |

I see loads of teenagers and 20 something's that have an attitude. Nearly all of them have never had any boundaries set so they don't conform to our ways.
Maybe we should have some form of national service, I don't mean the military, where they are given some structure and that they aren't worthless and have something worthwhile to contribute to society.

Maybe conforming was the wrong word but they need to know that there are things you can and can't do. I see a lot of kids who won't ever be employed, certainly not for long, as they won't take instructions about how to do things |

Things are either too left or too right, too Draconian or too liberal.
There's no magic cure for it I'm afraid, when there was national service the likes of the krays and others still existed.

I think most of us will have been smack by our parents at sometime but violence is never the answer. How many of us were told if someone hits you hit them back, if we follow that ethos we might get more than we bargained for. |

Not the kids that's the problem, it's the parents. Like most kids I pushed the boundaries at every opportunity, but the biggest fear wasn't being arrested etc, it was my parents, especially my mother finding out. If another parent, teacher, anybody told her I'd been up to bad stuff there was no denying, no saying they were lying. Nowadays parents believe their little darlings couldn't, wouldn't misbehave in any way, regardless of the evidence. |
