As previously said personal preferences. Its a pain pleasure thing. It really depends on the individual and thier nipple sensitivity to a degree.
If you have highly sensitive nipples sometimes it is better to clamp the surrounding breast tissues instead of the nipple.
Same effect without the over stimulation of the nipple...
Types of nipple clamps can also be the key. Progressive clamps (like clover) are fine when on but can be painful when pulled due to the spring like construction.
Others can be clamped around the nipple to give an even tension. A consistent pressure and heighten nipple sensitivity.
The removal can be as much fun as the fitting...

Mrs G likes them (see profile pic) but sometimes like it’s been said before, can hurt coming off. nipple play is a big thing for Mrs G she loves it
she’s also clamped me up a few times ( it’s not bad but she adjusts them so they ain’t as tight on me) cause i’m a woose |

We have both tried clamps but find that they can be pretty painful when first starting out, even with adjustable tension clamps.
We got a pair of rubber suction cups though the other week and these are faaaaar better than the clamps because you can alter how much they suck by how much air you squeeze out. Definitely a lot less painful and much more enjoyable. They were pretty cheap too on LH using the good ol' 16% Fab discount
