Council Tax Rises Again

Council Tax due for yet another above inflation rise. But does anyone know where it all goes ?
Where I live the roads and pavements are like Beirut, you've more chance seeing a UFO than a police officer and the local council office is only open Tuesday to Wednesday 10-3, with a two hour lunch break. |

Social services, social care, temporary housing, pensions, diversity training etc.
Not much spent on things we really care about. |

What about self reliance and responsibility?
The social safety net should be just that. Short term assistance in case of dire emergency. Not the default in minor hardship. |

So you have a mum of 3 living I privet renting acomedation. The land lord wants the property back so puts to the courta section 137 no fault election. After about 6 months rhe balifs evict the family. They turn up at the council with what they can carry efetivly home less. How do you expect this mum and children to be able to rehome them? Self Hastings where I live I'd guit a deprived area think it about 5/6 in the UK. lots of people leaving on benifits and living hand to mouth. |

Here in Plymouth the council have a hotel of 550 rooms virtually full of homeless and asylum. All waiting on social housing. Add to that all the holiday let’s, caravan/ camp sites full of same.
Last time I looked 110,000 households in Plymouth, 40% rented (social and private) with 12,700 on local authority housing waiting lists.
Exodus of private sector landlords due to various policies of increased taxation and regulation. |

Short term emergency, which is what the system is designed for. |

So effectively councils have been perpetuating the current crisis we're in with housing. Taking more funds every year building more social housing for more families to live in then producing the another generation of social housing candidates.
Not sustainable on an island with limited space.
Solution, print more money and reclaim land on the coasts.

Not always that easy so you are a couple.
Let's say you and the wife have a mortgage. Go out for a drive and you male have a hart attack and at the wheel. The wife looses a leg where the car crashes you are left pralised. How would you now support your family.
The life insurance pays off the mortgage just.
But is the property suitable for a disabled family with no income as nether can work and the bills are still going out. Savings have now gone. Just think how this would impact you. |

Not really. For one councils don't build much any more hastings is looking at obtaining 500 properties over I belive its 5 years. To help. But as you said its down to Social Housing organisations like Southern Housing in this area with some othere but. They don't build much. It's down to private sector. If you build new housing you have to give 10% I think it is to Social housing. Yes give build for no return this pushes up the cost of what is left to sell.
Also changes regulations to private landlords has made the investment less lucrative so lots are getting out of a quite high risk market. So More Secston 137 notices so the property can be sold.
So less property available to rent pushes up prise supply and demand.

On average 57p out of every pound is spent on social care which councils have to provide legally, and that amount is only increasing as the population gets older. Next biggest spend is 8p per pound spent on highways and public transport. Social care costs are increasing but the money from central government has been decreasing for prettt much 15 years. Councils of every political persuasion don't really have a choice but to increase council tax |

Is the source of this the ageing population, or the increasing number of people who could work not doing so and therefore too many taking out of the pot? |

The poorer people are the more likely to use services. Child poverty has definitely had an effect but the aging population is the main cause of increasing financial pressure on councils. |

Whilst the older population has generally "paid" in to the system but, and this true of all of us, unless you are very very rich in your lifetime you will take out more than you put in. |

There is no "pot" people pay into. Working people pay for retired people. Those people that are retired now paid for the retired people when they were working. Now people are living longer there are more older people taking out of the system but there isn't the reciprocal increase in the number working people. |

Well by law they are all allowed to put up council tax by 5% per year… so most of them are going to do that… the interesting thing will be if any councils ask the government for special dispensation to increase above that level |

Rayner has signed of 6 councils above the 5%. Bradford 10%, Newham, Windsor and Maidenhead 9%, Birmingham 7.5%.

If benifit and lots of wages went up 6.7% what did people expect to happen with council tax less then 6.7% will mean a cut to services.. |

It would nice to see council tax fall.
I drive a beat up old banger, meanwhile a council manager drives around in a big BMW.
I live in a noisy leaky flat meanwhile a council employee is buying a second home.
I spend my money in this country meanwhile the council funds Hamas and PLO.
It's not safe to step outside the front door, and I don't go out socially locally after dark.
Yep, the usual potholes all over the place.
Note I'm not referring to Bedford Council. But one in the county.

Hey don't worry about that, a lot of roles are centrally funded.... And more good news, the government has squirrelled away half a billion to cover the NI increases local councils will be facing in April, that is still £163 million short so will create a funding gap. Do you think the government are going to keep approving the over 5% increases...... We wont tax the workers LOL
The budget that keeps on giving.... |

They refused Cheshire Easts request to increase theirs by 9.9%, so 4.9% it will be then. |

The NI contribution uplift will come in April, I would assume the £512million of tax payers money the government have took out of the coffers will find its way to places like Cheshire East, or they really will be in a mess.
However the councils will still need to plug the £163million shortfall.
