For those in Scotland that follow the news. What's your thoughts on the 5% tourist tax in Edinburgh. For those visiting Edinburgh and already being price gouged during tourist season, will that alter your plans? |

It’s quite normal In European cities, of course. I don’t see it changing too many people’s plans. |

Not just levied on tourists. The self catering airbnb industry is used heavily by people staying in the city(s) for work related stays. Many hotels BB’s have work vans in the car parks, so it will be going on some end customers bill
Vat at 20%, and 5% tourist tax. |

For visiting ? No it would not discourage me in the slightest. I kind of figure that as a guest of the city, I'm consuming resources and using infrastructure. If that levy contributes a little back in to the local economy, and thus improves services and gives people jobs, then I'm all for it. |

Agreed I have yet to see what they deem "tourist". Will it be anyone with a non EH driver's license etc.
Plus as someone else wrote it might be normal in the EU, which the UK left for it's various reasons, it's the first to be done in the UK.
As far as VAT, tourist can claim that back at the airport and not owe it. |

On operators, NI and wage increases, business rates increases, Wales has seen a significant number of holiday accommodation put on the market due to doubling of council tax. From April holiday let operators can only claim basic rate mortgage interest relief and reduced wear and tear allowances - Jeremy hunt dismantled the furnished holiday Lettings tax system. Next there’s a holiday let / air bnb planning and licensing scheme coming to add to costs.
