Louise Haigh Resigns
Jump to: Newest in thread
The UK’s Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has resigned, after the media uncovered that she was convicted of misleading the police over the alleged theft of her mobile phone.
She claims that she didn’t realise the phone was still in her house, and hadn’t been taken. Doesn’t sound particularly believable, but she was convicted anyway.
But why did Starmer appoint a convicted criminal to this important role? |

She's been a bit of a disaster in that role, giving the rail unions their pay rise with no concessions from their side.
That said I don't think a minor conviction should stop anyone becoming an MP or Minister. We all make mistakes in life, especially when young. |

There have been more Labour MP’s imprisoned for expenses fraud than any other party. |

"It must have been a long time ago, the police around here haven’t been doing anything more than giving you a crime number for the insurance claim for years. "
It was a work phone supplied by her employer so I doubt she could claim on the insurance |

"I think this is a blessing in disguise for Starmer, it’s broken up the the socialist gang at his top table.
A little too late for the tax payer though…."
No....he will still have to balance the wishes of the left. |

"The UK’s Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has resigned ..."
The Radio 4 presenter announcing this earlier today said that neither her statement or the response from SKS mentioned the word "resigned". |

I've read elsewhere it was not a one off & was possibly the third time she'd "Lost" a work phone.
This last time the police were involved & she left Aviva shortly after.
I think the one incident in isolation would not be enough for her to resign as it's being fed to us as a genuine mistake.
I wouldn't have pled guilty as a one off, no matter what my brief said.

Is this the same lady that hounded Boris about his lockdown parties? She sounds a bit hypocritical to me.
Not that I agree with the parties but sometimes it pays to think before you open your mouth. |

She was a special constable at one stage so clearly understands fraud.
If a phone is reported nicked when it gets turned on the phone ID flags up and will notify the fraud department.
With a new SIM inserted it's easy to see who bought the sim.
I'd imagine it's a lot easier to just sack someone than involve the police then have to provide statements and potentially go to court so they were either vindictive or there's more to it.
I also read it wasn't one phone. If this is true then it's a series of frauds not a one off and the conviction will be for multiple offences. This is public record and will be easy to find.
I also read that a Starmer spokesperson said what she disclosed to him and what he has since found out didn't tie up so she had to go.
Yes lots of "I've heards" but something for you to research if you can be bothered. |

Respectfully to the "it was an innocent mistake" brigade.
She had plenty of time to report finding the phone. It's not as if the police would have been knocking her door down 10 minutes after she turned it on....the phone would have 'pinged' as being in use immediately. The phone company would have informed the police from which mast it had pinged but that would take a while. The subscriber would have been informed which wouldalsotake a while. The police would then have then approached the subscriber to ensure that the phone hadn't been reported as found which would have taken a while.
There would have been plenty of opportunity for a declaration to be made but 10 years after a guilty plea, she has attempted to swerve by saying that she was poorly advised.
The best mitigation would have been being publically open about it from day one. |

One day it'll be a requisite to be a con on politics - just look at the US. |

It seems she lied about the age when she was 'mugged' (said she was 24 when actually older) and lied when she claimed to be the youngest ever female cabinet Minister.
The new Govt certainly has an interesting approach to facts ! |

She said she was 24 but from my calculations, she was 25, possibly 26.
You'd think it would be fairly important from someone in her position to get the facts right, no? |

She hasn't been the most stable of ministers...The near own goal she scored encouraging people to boycott P&O ferries, just as the owners of, P&O, DP world were about to announce an £1 Billion investment in London Gateway port.. Starmer needed to publicly distance himself and the government from her remarks.
There was also the letter she signed from ministers complaining about forthcoming cuts to departments ahead of the budget.
And now some work of fantasy involving a mugging, a phone being turned on that came to the attention of the police, and Starmer accepting Haigh's resignation after "further information" emerged...

Do try and keep up, these are Government ‘facts’, you need to look at the weather forecast to see which way the wind is blowing in order to know what the ‘facts’ are today. |

"Starmer does show consistently poor judgment. Even if he only knew about the one case, why would you put a convicted fraudster in a high profile Cabinet Job ? " That's because Keir Starmer is stupid

Yes hopefully the UK and EU can start learning something from the US.
US GDP per capita up 70% since 2008. UK and EU GDP per capita broadly stagnant over the same period.
The differential is going to increase massively over the next four years.
The UK and EU either need to start learning from other countries or die. |

It is in hands of the Irish to decide whether they are happy or not with that, as it was the US citizens.

Reading a recent update on this story, it has been suggested the police became suspicious of the photo she submitted of the lost phone, the metadata indicated the photo was taken after the alleged mugging was reported.
