So Musk is being appointed by Trump to this role alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, with a goal of slashing federal government inefficiency.

Musk says the role “will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people”.

After four more years of spendthrift Labour government, is it inevitable that the UK will have to do the same?

Public sector productivity is dismal and only getting worse.

Successive governments of all hues seem unable to confront the problem, instead taking the easy route of trying to spend their way to improved outcomes, which is just throwing taxpayers’ money down the drain to no useful end.

But which UK business people could be appointed to do the same? Do we have anyone approaching Musk’s calibre?

What about the inestimable Mr Farage, who also enjoys an exceptionally warm relationship with President Trump?

It's going to be a difficult journey and they will need lots of persistence to get through their reforms. They will face a strong fight from the public sector workers. But UK has to go through it at some point like Argentina is going through it already. So we can learn from these countries.

There should be a department in all governments looking at ways to cut out waste and make things more efficient. Wasting public money should be wiped out

Couldn't agree more! There's bits here that are created by the taxation of businesses to ensure the public are educated about certain things...

Pension wise

Money helper

Citizens advice

Financial Ombudsman

Etc

But definitely need a government/public funded efficiency agency... And then go to the charities to maximise their efforts

I thought so too. But apparently Musk can't contest in elections because he isn't born there. So it makes sense for him to stick with Trump. Having a powerful person by his side is always going to help.

From Trump's perspective, Musk's money is going to be useful for him. Unless Musk becomes poor, I don't see that happening.

until they fall out as the harder republicans push for more things that musk doesnt like ... it will be doomed in the long run with them , as they couldnt stand each other not too long ago, much like VD Vance who detested trump and here he is waiting in the wings hoping to be the next emperor if trumpet man pops his clogs before 2028 (possible as he is old man now )

The plan is to use the excuse of efficiency to slash current government employees and replace them with Trump loyalists. Project 2025 has already stated that thus us the plan. Trump wants total loyalty and nobody to challenge any if the barking plans he intends to implement. Smacks of fascism!

Nah, it will be fine, he only has 4 years max, after 2 years the REPs will be looking towards his replacement, this will enrage Trump as he will no longer be ‘the man’ . If he starts playing up it will be the republicans that bring him down because they will no longer need him after 2028

So when Starmer appoints people to cabinet who he thinks will carry out his vision of government that's fascism?

What a weird statement

You think trump, or any politician, would appoint people they couldn't hope to trust, or that they think would be disloyal?

We had it. It was called austerity. The Civil Service was cropped, Govt Agencies were cropped by cutting budgets and ordinary people have not yet recovered.

Cutting costs in this country has had profound secondary effects (unintended consequences), but I think that what we experienced here will be nothing compared to what will happen over there.

The planned methods to slash costs in the way that Trump and Musk are planning will have decades long consequences and will set back the United States for a very long time to come.

"The Guardian has abandoned X in protest.

What a loss.

it's not a protest .... they just said X is shit so they're not bothering

I concur, it’s definitely shit, no wonder it’s plummeted in value im sure he will survive and not be eating beans on toast anytime soon

Definitely, he makes billions from selling electric cars, he is a eco warrior id say hes a problem solver with a finacially motivated background, just what America needs

Indeed, producing electric cars, saving the planet , *offsetting the carbon* theyre a bit like dpf filters, store it all up and deposit it elsewhere other than the emmisions reader 😂

In your opinion, not based on any facts

based on common sense but thats in short supply too around here

Common sense v science based facts and research from a company worth 1 trillion , I am going for the latter 👍weve had these science based facts from multi billion /trillion pound companys back in 2019 with a certain thing and look how that all panned out "

"The Guardian has abandoned X in protest.

What a loss.

Musk’s achievements get better by the day."

Musk story is a funny one. He was darling of the left for awhile. The guy is at the forefront of a company that has managed to make electric vehicles much cheaper for the masses. He invested a lot in solar power.

The left wingers should have theoretically supported him. But NO. They did their ideological purity test on him and started casting him a villain the moment he started becoming richer. While most other celebs are cowards and would meekly apologise when the internet thugs turns against them, some of them fight back.

Like how JK Rowling took on the left, Musk went to another level and spent millions in support of Trump And he owns the platform where the lefties where ganging up on people who didn't fall in line with their party line.

"So Musk is being appointed by Trump to this role alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, with a goal of slashing federal government inefficiency.

Do we have anyone approaching Musk’s calibre?"

“Public sector productivity is dismal and only getting worse. “

Actually… this statement is fundamentally incorrect

Since COVID protocols allowed more people the opportunity to work from home… and the proposals to increase the opportunity of “4 day working weeks” ( which is a misnomer in the public journalism reporting because what is being discussed is 5 in 4) the public sector, well the civil service sector has seen an increase in productivity, and increased in retention of staff and a lowering of sickness levels…

Jacob Rees mogg when he was at the cabinet office didn’t want everyone back into the office for efficiency reasons… he did it because business in city centre were not doing as good a trade

There was a recent ONS report that showed that public sector productivity has only increased about 5% since 1997 whereas private sector productivity had increased by 40% in the same period

I'm no fan of the Guardian, they print some appalling drivel at times. But in this instance I applaud their principled position on X. It's a toxic platform owned by a political influencer and will increasingly peddle Trump's agenda. Kudos.

Looks like everyone bolted x for blue sky this week… interesting

The other thing is going to be interesting is where he thinks he will be able to slash government spending by a third without touching social security or Medicare/medicaid… just because those two account for about 2/3 of all us spending

Which would mean he would have to cut every part of discretionary spending from the budget

I have a question.

Does Musk's new position in government effect the amount of tax he has to pay?

It sounds like a good idea on paper but in practice you’d end up appointing the same type of people as those you claim to want to get rid of

Factionalism would only grow

Also I predict Musk and Trump are going to have a falling out at some point.Musk is much more personally involved than trump is taking hours on his social media per day.

Trump uses social media while on the toilet and spends about five seconds thinking what he’s going to say

Two very different personalities in reality

Musk lasted just a couple of months last time around before he bailed. That's a good indicator.
