I am a chef and would love to help out but what can we do

Stay at home. Wash your hands and clean/ disinfect surfaces. Practice social distancing and high levels of hygiene when you go out.

Look out for voluntary opportunities, say (things I've seen in my area) through your MP or council. Sign up to be an NHS volunteer.

Advise family and friends, whenever possible about the instructions given.

I get that but as a chef I know about Hygiene but if I could cook for them no need to meet. make sandwiches if they hungry do shopping but always stay safe

I did that and got offers to work in the docks ffs

look up GoodSam NHS, they are looking for volunteers in a few different ways of helping. I have just signed up.

There's potentially a need here with those shielding, but I'm not sure how you'd go about fulfilling it, and I imagine hygiene requirements will be extra stringent now.

Go where the need is. We need to be flexible and adapt.

Majority to self isolate.

The others such as yourself may benefit from contacting the local hospitals to ask or the regional PCT if they're still staffed.

Don't do this unsolicited. It's an idea, but go through a registered charity, the NHS, etc, and make sure you use only items that can be completely sanitised, such as glass.

Check out Olio (food sharing app/Facebook group) - they're setting up a way for people to help with school lunches for those who aren't able to do it themselves; sounds like it might be right up your street...

Definitely keep an eye on NHS jobs locally too, a lot of Trusts are recruiting support staff as well as clinical staff just in case entire teams go down! Posts will be under things like Bank Chefs or Catering Assistants.
