The first ever television programme shown in the UK was on November 2nd 1936 , when a woman named Adele Dixon sang a song from Alexandra Palace for the BBC .
Although she had an amazing claim to fame , being the first ever woman to be on UK television, almost nobody has ever heard of her, which I think is a shame .
After a successful 11 years on stage and screen , she retired in 1947 to dedicate her life to her partner .
They were married for many years until his death in 1976 , something which she never really recovered from .
She died of pneumonia, virtually penniless in 1992 .
