Bands/Musical Artists That Were Once Great....
Jump to: Newest in thread
.....but who now rather crappy.
Sometimes a band or artist will explode from seemingly nowhere onto the music scene and inthrall audiences with their revolutionary material.
However, whether through creative exhaustion, haughty contempt or even in some cases, sheer laziness, the said artists output sadly seems to abate in quality over time and they end up as a pale imagining of what they were once capable of.
Of course, judgement on this may be predominantly subjective but list artists/bands who you feel fall into this category.
Off you go good folks |

"Coldplay. we're they ever good? Always found them to be drab.
First couple of albums were ok
"Clocks" is an absolutely brilliant song. A great piano riff, interesting rhythm, beautiful melody."
Agree. First album was good. The rest rubbish lol |

Venom: Once upon a time three Tyneside lads formed probably the (then) most talked about Metal band on the planet and in turn directly influenced a whole slew of other bands including a young and upcoming act by the name of Slayer....
Unfortunately, a mixture of factors including infighting, bitterness when the bands they directly influenced surpassed them and a general decline in the quality of their output led to them being....erm...not so very good anymore.
In fact, whilst still going, there are now TWO versions of Venom (as the members hate one another’s guts) One fronted by Chronos, the original singer/bassist and the other, Venom Inc headlined by Abaddon, the original drummer.

Is easy to hate on Coldplay but I think they are getting better and better. The guy puts his heart and soul out for all to view into some of those songs.
One that hadn't lived up the the promise of the first album is Evanescence. |

Jaysus, could list about 50 bands that started out fantastic and now struggle to release anything beyond mediocre.
Sepultura.
Exodus.
Obituary.
Biffy Clyro.
Machine Head
Cradle of Filth
Dying Fetus

Metallica: Rampant egos within the band and treating other band members like crap (poor old Jason Newstead and much earlier on, a certain Mr Dave Mustaine) have hardly helped matters and it is clear that the quality of their output has gone from awesome to sadly, rather ordinary.

Queen or what's left of them. I love Queens music but Freddie was and still is irreplaceable how can you replace a personality like that? they should have hung it up and left it alone, sorry but that's my opinion. |

Oh but they're not. Amy Lee looks lovely but doesn't engage with with the crowd or the rest of the band. No personality at all. She can sing the songs but that's not enough.
You want to know who engages with EVERYONE at a gig... . Chris Martin. |

" totally agree with you and I'm a Metallica fan, Jason Newsted amazing bass player (cunning stunts bass solo was literally the reason I started playing bass) and what they did to Mustane was so wrong. Get bored half way through an album now. |

Ritchie Blackmore: An incredible rock guitarist - one of the very best in fact as certainly demonstrated in his work for both the legendary Deep Purple and later, his own band, Rainbow.
Unfortunately, Ritchie subsequently embarked into renaissance music with his wife, under the band name, Blackmore’s Night.
Now, I’m not one to criticise his decision - if it makes him happy then more power to him say I and as bands of this ilk go, they’re not actually bad BUT.....listening to his output now (in the said band) and contrasting it with his days in the aforementioned Purple and Rainbow.....well, there’s simply no comparison for me. Ritchie - put down the Lute and pick up your Fender once again good sir! |

Yngwie Malmsteen: His sweep licking technique and lightning fast arpeggios are admittedly a thing of beauty.
However....with an ego marginally larger than the size of Sweden from where he hails and a seeming inability to move forward musically from his first few albums, instead content to play basically the same thing for the last thirty plus years, there’s only so much one can listen to from him after his initial breakthrough albums on the scene. |

There and to the left a bit |
Bit of a tough one for me this - but Madness...their last album was very meh - Suggs' voice is pretty shot through and they have lived off the same set list for 30 years pretty much - now that said 2019 (their 40th) saw them do some amazing live performances so maybe there is life in the old dog yet |

"Paul Weller
Morrissey
And every single band ever once they get past their 4th album
I agree with Weller.
He blows hot and cold for me
Went to see him last year and was boring so left early.
Madness just go through the motions and have lived on past glory’s for last 30 years.
UB40 another band that should give it up.
But beats working I suppose.

That about sums Weller up for me too.
Madness I refer you to my earlier post - although I'd disagree they live off past glories - The Liberty Of Norton Folgate was a fantastic album and the one after wasn't bad either - although the last one was very meh
UB40 are just a joke with the two versions and all the legal wrangles etc |

Yep I saw Weller recently too. Insisted on just playing songs off his then latest album that nobody knew and were incredibly dull. Reluctant to play much from his back catalogue and might get one Jan song if you're lucky. One of the most boring concerts I've ever been to. |

"Metallica: Rampant egos within the band and treating other band members like crap (poor old Jason Newstead and much earlier on, a certain Mr Dave Mustaine. "
The reason Metallica were so great and so influential was because they had, at one point, James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine and Cliff Burton.
It's amazing that they continued to make four great albums after Mustaine left and one after Cliff's passing. They became a lesser band after "Through the Never". |
