Films with utterly miserable endings
Jump to: Newest in thread
You know how it is; You’ve enjoyed the film all the way through and then for the finale you’re rewarded with the main protagonist dying(!) or else some other downbeat plot twist which leaves you feeling more than a little deflated.
List examples good folks
I’ll start with, The Champ starring Jon Voight.
Off thou go’eth |

Listen To Your Heart: A truly charming love story between a talented young songwriter and a hearing impaired girl he falls in love with......until a sudden utterly horrible and cruel twist at the end..... |

The Descent - after all that horror and losing all her friends, you think the main character has managed to escape the caves and get back to her car, only for her to regain consciousness and it turns out she's still down there surrounded by those creatures.... |

"Uncut Gems was a pretty harrowing ending
I don't think any film will beat Se7en for a dark ending"
I heard that that's excellent but I had to turn it off, it was just so noisy and messy, whoever good it got. Too... progressive in it's direction? |

"Dead Man’s Shoes

All entitled to our opinions as thank dog we’re not all the same, life would be pretty boring
That said I really like the movie |

"American History X
Absolutely, just as you think there’s some redemption. "
I'm not sure I even got past the kerb part of that movie. That still gives me nightmares. |

I watched a Liam Neeson Film yesterday called The Grey. The ending was soooo annoying and ridiculous.
Also, Downsizing with Matt Damon. A film that went nowhere and the ending was shit.

The so termed, ‘Spaghetti Western’, The Great Silence: The hero is mute as his vocal cords were slit by the villains (led by perennial looney Klaus Kinski) when he was younger so he seeks revenge with a modified revolver.
Years later, in the finale, the main villain and his cronies take a load of hostages and threaten to kill them all unless the hero faces them in a shootout.
Fair enough? The hero is sure to wipe the floor with the miscreants right? Well, actually not for firstly they shoot the hero dead(!) before his grief stricken love interest picks up his gun and they kill her to(!!)
Finally, (seemingly just to make the audience even more depressed than they already are) the scumbags proceed to shoot ALL the hostages(!!!) and we last see Klaus the head villain, smirking merrily at his handy work (!!!!) |

"Another one: The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston (and later remade as, I Am Legend with Will Smith).
What a charming ending.....not! "
There is 2 endings to I am Legend. I thought both of them were quite food though |

Boxing Helena, was a shit film anyway but the ending made it worse.
American Phsyco kinda messed with my head.
Series not film, Fringe - it was like they just needed to get it finished. Ending of Grimm was similar |

"The boy in the striped pyjamas "
I can't watch that a second time, too upsetting for me, as I have Children that age
But another to add to the thread
A Dutch film called 'The Vanishing' if you've heard of it, you'll know.
*Edit do not watch the absolutely disgusting American remake |

"Requiem for a dream has to have one of they most depressing endings ever!
Oh god yes, I forgot all about that film.
Brilliant film though"
Amazing film, Darren Aranifski (spelling) at his best.
And back when Jared Leto was an out and out actor. |

"'Threads' -starts off miseable, becomes horrifying ends on a note of utter hopeless devastation."
Oh my god! - I’d forgotten (or perhaps subconsciously obscured for my psychological health reasons?) that one
That was truly as GRIM as hell! |

"Oldboy
The one and only original. There was no american remake. It never happened!"
Hell yes! I refuse to even bother with the remake. What a cruel twist ending
(And that poor squid on another note....) |

Given the 'Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' posts, can I just check no one was expecting a happy ending from a film about the Holocaust, were they...?
On a lighter note, I'll add 'La La Land' - nowhere near as harrowing as some of the films mentioned, but that feeling of love lost and missed opportunities. 'One Day' for similar reasons.
What can I say, I'm a hopeless romantic!
P.s. great thread, OP. |

A Bridge Too Far, where the injured and dying british soldiers are all singing 'Abide by me' as the victorious German soldiers come into their position to take them prisoner, then the scene cuts to the displaced family walking away with their belongings. |

Ditto any American remake
Try 'Climax' - Gaspar Noé, although it's pretty hard work all the way through. |

After Irreversible I tend to find his films a bit difficult to watch. But I'll look it up as I don't mind being challenged with out there Directors (yes looking at you Lars ) |

Lars indeed. Antichrist certainly had its moments but generally I found that whole trilogy quite mesmerising. |

"Kes of course.
And Tyrannosaur.
But then these are both broadly miserable all through. But still fantastic of course."
I Daniel Blake
Maybe today Kes should be seen as a celebration of 'better' times: A time of full time stable employment and a strong sense of community. |

Meet Joe Black.
Brad Pitt got built up to be some messiah like prophet/miracle worker. Everywhere he walked fireworks went off he was silhouetted against skies of impossible beauty and awe.
He turned out to be a tax inspector.

Rogue One
It's not miserable,I guess because the gang of characters did what they set out to achieve ..but still.
(My favourite, star wars film by a mile)

I forgot that one; After contracting rabies whilst saving the boy from a wolf, they were forced to shoot the poor titular dog in the end Needless to say; Much blubbing did ensue on my part |
