Identity is such a complex and subjective topic. I studied it at uni, some are complimentary and some are not. For instance you can be a leftie or a rightie, or an innie or an outie. But you can be English, british and European all at the same time . |

I’d say I’m British.
English though? Yes I’m English, born in England and lived in England most of my life. But if English is that woman ranting about immigrants on Question Time last week, if it’s a thug with a red cross flag going on about Tommy Robinson, world war 2, 1966 and the empire then I’m not that sort of English.
Looking forwards to getting flamed now. Asbestos suit on! |

Ireland is it's own independent country so of course they have their own anthem
Scotland and Wales use their own because they compete independently in many sports and with the rise of nationalism it was a logical step to take. England toyed with having their own, especially is cricket and rugby where ideas like Jerusalem were floated but didnt get much support from the public |

I agree.
My passport says British.
But tbh I never claim to be any nationality anyway. Cant see the point especially since most forms of national identity these days have been promoted and adopted by organisations and causes I'd never support in a million years.

It’s not about Jerusalem, it’s about England with its dark, satanic mills etc. It’s about England becoming Jerusalem after a visit from Christ, how things would be different etc.
I love it but it’s not particularly patriotic as an anthem. |

I'm English as I was born in England to English parents.
Doesn't matter to me who calls themselves what as long as everyone is respectful of others.
I am not about to call myself something else just because a minority of mindless idiots have stolen the identity of what it is to be English.
Sadly I have to justify saying I'm English by following it with I'm not a racist moron tho.
It saddens me how the classing one's self as English is seen to also class you as being a racist thug!!

I'm English, by default I'm also British. Officially.
I'm not defined by my nationality. It means "nothing" in terms of the person that I am, I share some thoughts and feelings with other English and British identifying people, and I disagree greatly with the thoughts of feelings of some too. In fact that applies to people the world over. |

We were in Spain during a World Cup game between Germany and England where the “fans” If both teams lined the Main Street throwing bottles at each other. We managed to duck down a side street only to be confronted by German fans asking aggressively if we we were English, my answer was Scottish with a threatening step forward, it’s the only time my English girlfriend has ever said she’s Scottish, I think we were away to get done in ![](/icons/s/rolleyes.gif) |

British yes. But not English because that often takes the form of some kind of ethnonationalism.
Weirdly, Scots or Irish people have referred to me as English but ‘English’ people mostly refer to me as British.

"english, i feel saying british is like a french person sayinr europeon"
How so? Britain has existed as a named entity for about 2,000 years, but England only since the 5th century AD.
And to a lot of people in rural France, ‘French’ means the Parisian elite. Their history and culture is almost as complicated as ours. |

"English not British.
Or I will say I'm in the UK not Britain, no idea why."
The UK is a social, political and economic region. It can be dissolved by Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland breaking away (becomes the untied kingdom then!! )
Britain is a collection of countries. Even if the UK breaks up Britain is still the same collection of countries

"Or where you’re from?
So I consider myself Scottish, not British. Don’t know why, it’s just how I feel "
Weirdly I class myself as British because I dont feel strictly tied to my English heritage. The Welsh heritage in my family is fairly strong whereas my English heritage can be traced back to Ireland as early as the late 1800’s. I support Wales on an international scale. Im more proud to be British in a sense it encompasses the best parts of the isles rather than English. Although I dont have an option, for if I was purely Scottish, Welsh or Irish I would make a point of not being British. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |
English, then British and proud to be both. Don't remotely identify with the racist connotations of being English and get angry at the inference that flying the flag is racist. If so that must also be the case of the flags of Scotland, Wales and Ireland too - which would be bizarre! We should all be proud to be what and who we are, without the stupidity of looking down on each other, including in sport. Rivalry yes, nastiness no! |

Very much this. The last few years I've almost been ashamed to be English. And if I could, I'd be European. |
