So,this afternoon there was a wasp in the window creating a nuisance of itself, so I was about to introduce it to a rolled up newspaper when it struck me to be Christian on the Sabbath so I opened the windows and away it went.
I know it will probably return in six months and sting me when I'm not watching, but que Sera Sera.
It made me think tho, what purpose do wasps have, apart from buzzing in bathroom windows and drowning themselves in summer fruit drinks?
So,name your own useless animals and give the reasons why .... |

From Wiki: Believe it or not, wasps do more good than harm. They play a vital role in protecting gardens and farm crops by controlling pest populations. They capture and consume insects such as flies, caterpillars and beetle larvae. |

"A wasp?. In this weather?
We had 2 huge (and I mean HUGE) blue bottles and a crane fly buzzing around the office last night, very odd for this time of year I thought!"
Maybe dead bodies under the floorboards |

All creatures are here for a reason, some have a big part to play, some a small part to play, but all significant in their own way. Even if it’s just to provide a food source for another creature who in turn does the same for another. |

Pandas. They are so utterly useless in so many ways. Although, if humans weren't around, their poor reproductive rates and single source of food wouldn't be an issue.
So, humans. Useless on the whole at living in balance with the rest of the planet. |

To be fair, their poor reproduction is not the fault of humans.
Pandas like to hedge their bets and give birth to twins. In the wild, the second twin literally is a “spare”, as females only have the energy to raise the stronger of the two. |

Every creature has a use in the food chain/ecosystem. You upset the balance and things often go to shit.
Prime example and an interesting viewing is the reintroduction to wolves in to yellowstone.
Just by adding these predators back in to the ecosystem of yellowstone, the landscape physically and visibly changed.
Even parasites play their part in some form. |

I know, I wasn't saying it was the fault of humans, more that if humans didn't exist then it wouldn't matter that pandas don't raise many young. They survived perfectly fine before we started destroying their habitat |

No I dont
Parasite definition
organism that lives in or on an organism of another species (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense.
Humans are not symbiotic we take from our host and give nothing in return

That's why it bugs me when natural selection fails. Those walkers up ben nevis in the snow wearing trainers and no wet weather gear having to be rescued. No leave them to their fate I reckon. I’d disagree. There are parasites who literally burrow into hosts bodies and grow/eat the host from the inside!
Little evidence of the ‘wonder’ of nature there! I think parasites are the principal argument against ‘god’s wonderful world’ really!
Parasites aside (and arguably humans are the primary parasite) then yes - every plant and animal has a purpose! |

Pollination, including being a fallback for bees. Some plants are exclusively pollinated by moths and so could become extinct. Moths also feature in the food chain, supporting birds, bats etc |

Wasps actually perform a vital function each day. They actually kill & eat various small bugs such as aphids that if left alone will multiply rapidly & take over gardens & be a nuisance themselves. |
