Ever been slightly spun out when people call you by your name and youve never met them before??
I used to have my name on my profile but now its removed. Also name badges that are worn for work.
I tend to just say 'thank you' for a service rather than 'thank you mary'
If you see a name do you use it? |

No I am not and I always respond by using their name in my reply message. I am more spun out, as you put it, by those who use pseudonyms, totally confusing trying to remember that Tom is actually David |

If you think its creepy then don't put your name on your profile
I expect if they called you by somebody elses name in a message you would'nt be impressed about it,why is it creepy when they've looked for the name you have put on your profile and then used it to address you?
That would be polite would'nt it? or am I completely in a parallell universe this morning

I find it very wierd
Even on here, i hate it when you go in chat and someone joker you have met feels its ok to say hi to you in the open room and use my real name then all the guys start calling me by my name, i really hate that and i think its rude that someone would give out personal info in a chat room, maybe just a name to them but i dont like it and if someone says hi to me and use my name i just ignor them, even if i have met them 10 times i will blank them so others dont realise they are talking to me and its a sure way of not getting a re meet
It feels odd in clubs too, but then if you go a lot and people know you and say hi other will over hear but i still feel its a bit forwards saying hi to someone you have never spoke to before and calling them by their name because you have over heard someone else say it |

I'll answer to both my real name or my fab name... in fact i'll answer to anything really, had a bloke calling my dave in a club for 3 years....
as others have said... if it matters that much then don't tell people, although those are the people who tend to get most confused in clubs.. when "john" isn't john.. and "sue" isn't sue...... |

Our names are on our profiles so id find it polite to be called by our names ,shows that its been read atleast.Dont mind anyone knowing my name nothing to hide.I would call peopleby thier names if itwas on thier profile and they signed their name after a message ,wouldnt go in chat and say hi then thier names unless they are ok with it. |

I didnt loose sleep over it, guess i did put my name on my profile as i was kind of 'signing it'
I still address people as Mr/Mrs/Miss/Sir/Madam even if i am aware of their actual name just out of politeness until i'm formerly given permission to use it.
Eg. Id be given a care plan with a clients full name but wouldn't use their name as they might prefer to be addressed anther way.
I don't have a problem with people using my name (i did have it on my profile) but when people do not know me start up a conversation in a chat room i find it strange especially if they don't introduce themselves. |

In a work setting like you have mentioned then im the same,I always ask what they like to be called out of respect,I don't go in a shop and look at peoples name tags to see what they're called and use it,im hoping im never in there long enough to need to know what their name is
I don't go into chat but if I did I would prefer to be called by my username as thats what id be using for everyone else, the same as on the forums as we all mostly address other users like that or a shortened version of it as it makes people easily identifiable
But with a message it does'nt bother me if im addressed by my username or my real name at all,if it did id change it to something else |

I prefer usernames and I tend to address people by that. If they have messaged me or made it known that they wish to be called their own name, then I will refer to them as that.
I don't agree with people using others" real names on a forum or chat if they haven't used their name on their profile. It indicates a lack of discretion to me.
Also I get the feeling that people use real names for others' as a kind of trophy that they are well known or more of an acquaintance than others. You tend to see it more with ladies, using guys names as a way to let others' know that they are somehow more intimate, they also tend to let others' know they have the mobile number of said guy too.
I think sometimes its a territory thing |

Yup, i think its also an "ohh we are in thing." i dislike it in chat and have pointed out before it can make it appear unwelcoming to newbies. |

When it coes to 'real' names being used on sites like these I've stopped believing that Jill & John are really called Jill and John. This comes from years knowing someone as Rob & Jo only to discover that that wasn't their real names at all, but to me they'll always be Rob & Jo. (they're not on this site) |

I get really confused when people have fab names, I have met a guy a few times called him Tom every time till I found out last time his name is Tim. Note neither name is true. I use people's user names unless told otherwise. |

I particularly enjoy the territorial verifications. I'm sure all sexes are guilty of this but I love it when two women are trying to outdo each other when verifying the same guy. I wish Admin could publish a book with these amusing veris in, its fascinating reading |

Have to hope he wasn't German or it could be herr Trigger which gets a bit personal in such places. |

Ahhh, I need to stay off these forums now lol... I never gonna shut up lol! Ok... On this matter I for one * go by LOLLY. Far easier than anything else as the amount of *Mary's n *Sue's in the one place.... Ahhh!
With this point tho, both myself and IE have been ratted out in the chat rooms. Ppl that to whatever point in our lives, were entrusted with our names, have gone n blurted them out to Tom, dick n fanny jill. It is unfortunate... And infact lol, I have had ppl from here ad me else where upon receipt of certain info but it is the risk you pay for the game we play x x L |
