Greatest Frontperson
Jump to: Newest in thread
A simple question (or is it?)......
Who in your opinion is/was the greatest musical frontperson ever? (I’ll allow you to list a few as I’m so generous and narrowing it down to a single individual may well prove tricky!)
They could be a solo artist or else front a band.
Remember, I’m not necessarily asking for your opinion on the greatest vocalist ever, rather those individuals whose effortless charisma can electrify a stage and inthrall an audience.
You get my gist right?
Over to you folks |

Joel O'Keeffe from Airbourne is up there for me, they are one of the best live rock bands out there and Joel commands the stage and crowd with his antics. He's not the best singer ever but he is a brilliant live performer. |

Freddie mercury..... I'm to young to have seen him perform live but watching clips of him perform stirs emotions and gets you going like no other I have ever seen live or in any clips I have viewed .the closest I have ever felt to watching Freddie was prodigy live at creamfields that was insane. |

I must concur with the inimitable Freddy Mercury
I’ll add a few honourable mentions though:
Steven Tyler, Pink, Prince, Ozzy, Michael Jackson and a certain Mr Dave Lee Roth who was (and probably still is) utterly bonkers |

"Joey
Jordan
Donnie
Danny
and Jon
.......the right stuff. "
A d from their classic, Step By Step:
‘Step one: We can have lots of fun,
Step Two: There’s so much we can doooooo,
Step Three: It’s just you and meeeeeeeeee!’ (Jordan super high note!) |

If you're including solo artists then I think any list would have to include the likes of Al Jolson and Liberace, unless your list is exclusively from the past forty years. Yes Freddy is definitely up there but Jolson was absolutely huge in his day and Liberace was by all accounts a brilliant showman.
They may not be particularly relevant today but you can't have a greatest of all time list and exclude people like them just because they were before your (and my) time. |

Absolutely; Liberace was amazing. Both an incredible frontman and an amazing pianist

Up on them there hills |
In his Ziggy days Bowie was stunning.
In an odd way, Alice Cooper
Marc Bolan.
For presence, Meat Loaf.
Topal on stage in fiddler on the roof when the set stopped working.
Elton John in a concert, when he played and sang for about 15 minutes when the electricity failed.
Problem is, not done many concerts. |

I watch clips of him playing his signature boogie woogie when I need cheering up. He was a diva, they don't make them like him any more.
Al Jolson.... Oh the times I've had to sit through The Rose of Washington Square or Jolson Sings Again. My mum's dad used to sing his songs and do little dance routines. Man was a legend. |

"Rod when he was with the Faces was a perfect front man, real swagger and that voice "
Yeah, but when Steve Marriott left the small faces they had to replace him with Rod AND Ronnie Wood, it was too tall an order for just one guy. |

Yes and they were both too tall so they couldn't be the Small Faces any more |

Phil Lynott - utter sex on legs
Fee Waybill - utter brilliance with The Tubes
Ian Drury - mesmeric
Lee Brilleaux - pure menace and genius
From another era entirely - Solomon Burke
And of course, the Boss tops the list... |

Lee Brilleaux is a great choice. Put heart and soul into every performance, you are absolutely right about the menace, and him combined with Wilko were definitely two people you'd not want to bump into at night down a dark Southend alleyway. |

Yes what a voice and a performer. I'm not a fan of many of his tunes, but I can't take it away from him. |
