Wholly Questionable Fashion Fads
Jump to: Newest in thread
Fashion trends come and go like the changing of the seasons and whilst there are many bygone styles which we may look back upon with a modicum of affection (and some of which may even make comebacks once in a while) there are unfortunately also darker chapters in the annals of fashion history that are only spoken of in polite society in hushed, scornful and embarrassed tones.
Good folks - would’st thou list for me the worst fashions in history you can muster. Did you ever personally don said fashion abominations in the name of being trendy?
Who remembers mustard coloured Corduroys? Ye gods!
However, I rather fancy that the sheer garish horror that was the Shell Suit will take some beating.....
Off you go |

Hair scraped back in a high pony tail, slicked with gel with two lame pieces of hair to frame the face. The actual pony tail was scrunched with so much mousse it was crunch.
Heavy black liner on the water line and white eye shadow only on the lids finished off with wet look clear gloss

Crunchy hair yes
I sometimes use black on the waterline but not heavy and not all the time. |

Usually wearing a denim skirt and baby pink slouch boots with a zip up boys hoody. If you weren’t wearing a boys hoody you borrowed and never gave back, you might as well home. Clearly not cool |

"Ra ra skirt
But I loved mine
It was the rule to wear them over leggings whilst wearing luminous leg warmers in the eighties
Women also donned the same look..... "
Haha I wore mine with bare legs and white heels |

I used to wear a brown and beige Corduroy jacket when I was a kid; Damn, I was so cool back then and if I wore it with my matching brown corduroy jeans, you could hear me approaching from half a mile away. |

Foundation on lips? *does not compute*
I was mostly a tomboy back then thank God. Except on party nights when I'd smear glitter gel everywhere |

Dream matte mousse foundation to so my entire face was the same colour and matte. I looked 2D except for my lips that were so glossy they were basically 4D |

"Ponchos."
I have one of those in my military survival kit.
....Having said that, in a full on survival situation, I might actually chose to succumb rather than go through the psychologically scarring ignominy of actually wearing it |

I generally coupled these with my green and yellow "Starsky and Hutch" cardigan.

I loved Dave Starsky’s awesome cardy - dripping from falling in the swimming pool in the opening credits. And remember - it was the law to do up as few buttons as humanly possible on one’s shirt back then to |

It's one of those things... It looks good on a small proportion of women, and the rest of us mortals shouldn't do that. |

Current one. Red eyeshadow.
There's a time and a place, and I partake occasionally, but there's a fine line between on trend and raging eye infection. (And I'd never comment on someone's makeup specifically, I'm not interested in being bitchy. Just in general, less is more) |

The way I wear it it hopefully doesn't look like conjunctivitis. But it's not the only colour I use, and I use it sparingly. |

I still have my grey Russell Athletic hoody that I’ve had since 1998 and I still wear it!
Gutted I don’t still have all my Adidas silky tracksuit bottoms with the luminous stripes or my Sergio Tacchini zip tips cos they’re about £60 now and I had 3 of them! |

"Men wearing shoes with no socks combo. Just looks awful.
Ed
Men’s shoes sans socks invariably equates to sweaty feet; Never a good thing, neither in looks nor scent.....
"
Sorry. A few years after the purple flared cords, I was "rocking" white moccosins, with no socks (or sometimes even worse with white fluffy socks). |

The quite recent combover thing that emo/alternative type kids seems to have, except they're not going bald.. so don't need to attempt a comb over in the first place.
The comedian Micky Flannagan has a really funny bit about this hairstyle on one of his shows. |

I had two of them boy. Purple to pink and orange into yellow. They sold them in British Home Stores and true story was with my Nan buying one in the Swansea store and Bonnie Tyler was in there and people managed to get her to sing I need a hero!
Also wtf is wrong with DM’s?
I have 3 pairs of Dr Martens and wear them at least one or twice a week. |

I remember wearing tartan knickerbockers when I was younger. They had buckles on the side.
I always wanted glossy black patent shoes for School too but alas my mum rightly said they’d be ruined in a week so there ended that dream. |

Talking of tracksuits, I remember in the eighties, every single man in the UK at some point donned those double white stripe ones (the stripes running down the arms and over the shoulders) which came in either red or blue; I had both colours (I was dead trendy see) and always felt like the Six Million Dollar man when wearing them. Hell, I even ran in slow motion and made ‘bionic’ noises whenever I moved |

Got one on launch day as I lived round the corner from the factory.
Thought I'd look cool at the student night at the local nightclub till I got there and every fucker was wearing one.
Never stopped low enough to buy the shorts though.

They did shorts in the same material?

Years ago my brother wanted a pair of patent leather shoes for school. My dad refused and said they were for ballroom dancers and that on the day they started our school assembly with "Begin the Beguine" he'd buy him a pair it's really no wonder I'm such a facetious, sarcastic twerp |

Does any chap remember wearing those brown coloured y-fronts with the white (or cream) seams that we’re all the rage in the late seventies/early eighties?
They were pretty nasty as were the Kays Catalogue photos of the male models stood around modelling them on a beach whilst smiling inanely and pointing at some imaginary scene of interest just out of shot.

Hail the mighty mullet! The hair style of Kings (and coincidentally as sported by Paul King of the eighties band, King who bequeathed unto us such classics as Love & Pride and Tracks Of Your Tears)
Pat Sharp’s was the mightiest of them all for my money - whoa!!!! |

Another unusual one - does anyone remember the brief (and highly regretful) eighties trend for donning those single strip sunglasses in the eighties?
You know the ones? They looked like Geordi La Forge‘a visor in Star Trek The Next Generation.
Probably blocked zero UV rays and with the added bonus of making one look like a prize arsehole. |

And another one, this time an absolute staple of ALL eighties teen movies: An oversized blazer (complete with bloody great shoulder pads of course) with the sleeves rolled up whilst wearing the obligatory white trainers (think Marty Mcfly from Back To The Future)
What the hell was that all about? |
