I've decided to do the deed and give up the fags. I have a vape and 1 cig left in my pack. I'm full of cold and it's on my chest, bonus though I have a husky voice. It's now or never.

Tips off anyone greatly appreciated as I'm hoping I have the willpower to do this x

Take it one step at a time. One hour at a time.

I also used a tracker that showed me the time since I last smoked and told me how my health had improved as a result. I found this super motivating.

Also, putting cigarette money into a jar or something, and instead using it to buy yourself something nice / have a night out or similar is a good idea.

Try and find a focus for the willpower, mine was when I found out I was pregnant and I never touched a fag again.

We both quit 17 years ago by slowly reducing numbers, then onto tobacco, and then just socially and then stoped. Then both started again about a year ago ! Quite enjoy smoking at the moment can’t see us fully quitting for a while.

Good luck , if you really, really want to quit you will , otherwise you’ll make excuses about it being hard! Nicotine is a baby compared to real drugs

Nicotine gum and reduce length you chew it for a number of pieces then reduce the strength of the gum and do the same.

Find something else to keep your hands busy.

It's the money is the main reason I want to stop. Plus the being conscious of how I smell and taste. I'm an all or nothing person. I'm refusing to buy more cigs so as soon as my last one has gone I'm setting my mind to being done x

The mantra, 'there's no such thing as just one' I think I was heard chuntering this for weeks when I stopped

Establishing new routines helps so much and keep spare vape batteries ready

I avoided smokers for the first few weeks but now if I feel I miss smoking I stand near a smoker and the smell helps remind me I'm good with my vape.

You can do it though

Hopefully we’ll both get there

It's not easy but I now enjoy my vape and all the different flavoures. I have also saved the money I would have spent and it really helps watching the savings grow and thinking of what I am going to spend it on. Best of luck.

It’s getting easier it’s the constant association that drives me mad rather than actually missing cigarettes. As long I don’t buy any I’m ok. If I had one I’d be a smoker again so won’t do it x

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

Congratulations! It's no small step and I imagine it can be challenging. Some people like my father are able to quit from one day to the next and never look back but more often than not it can be a struggle. The only useful advice a non smoker can give you is avoid being around people when they light up as that temptation will be constantly thrown in your face x

If you intend vaping instead then realise it’s not the same as smoking so don’t expect it to be. Just stick with it. Vaping gives you the nicotine your body will crave. And don’t have cigarettes near you lol

And haven’t smoked cigarettes for 4 years so it is doable. Cravings in the body normally only last a couple of minutes.... in the mind a lot longer

To be honest, I think it's more habit. Lighting up after food, after sex, with a drink. I've got a vape and it's taking the edge off but I feel all discombobulated, can't explain it. I think it is all in my mind though x

I read a book by a guy called Allan Carr, I'd recommend it. He makes you think about how and why you smoke, I got to the end and thought I don't actually want to smoke anymore, I felt a bit stupid that I'd let it have a hold over me.

I never had another cigarette since.

I stopped in 2008 for health reasons and never smoked again. I went cold turkey when I was admitted to hospital with very high blood pressure. I’d tried giving up loads of times. I was an expert at giving up and starting again. I always viewed it as giving up a pleasure. This time ain’t viewed it as stopping something that was slowly killing me. The cravings passed very quickly and within weeks of stopping I was able to stand outside a pub with my mates who smoked without any inclinations to join them. I have never felt the urge to smoke again since.

There was no doubt that reframing it in my mind changed my outlook, but also the emotional experience of being in hospital for 5 days as they tested me for everything that could have caused the extremely high blood pressure. The thought that ai might not see my son grow up was a big help. The final diagnosis at the end of 5 days - too much salt in my diet, but smoking and a high stress job were contributing to it too. So a lifestyle change was needed. It took me 8 years before I really addressed the other issue which was being unfit and overweight. That one is still a challenge albeit I’m fitter now than I was in my 30s and possibly look better than I did in my mid 30s, albeit a few more wrinkles and lived in look

Stop smoking and enjoy the amazing health benefits you’ll feel very quickly. That daily cough soon disappears and you’ll breathe more freely than you have in years.

Cap d’Agde, France

Had 10 years of giving up, one week, one month even 3 months all without long term success. It’s do-able but stressful the first few days but so easy to succumb to temptation in moments of weakness.

We both gave up together, used the service our GP offered, set a date and told our friends. Now years later we never even think about a smoke let alone miss them.

For me I found setting a target of 3 helped, ie aiming for the first 3 hours, the next, 3 days, 3 weeks etc

Even 30 hours, 30 days all helped, or counting our savings.

Just setting short term targets until I started to forget to set them any longer!

Good luck!

I smoked for 16 years, gave up on october the 1st last year.

I downloaded an app quit tacker which helped.

It keeps a track of how long you quit for, how much money you saved etc.

I've downloaded Quitnow! And so far I've gained back 1 minute, saved £7 roughly and avoided 12 cigs. I was a 20 a day smoker x

Vaping really does work if you want it to. First thing is wanting to stop smoking, which it sounds like you do.

May I ask what device you have and which liquid strength you've gone onto?

The cheap pens arent so bad but the coils can be invariable.

I'd personally advise to up your nicotine content being a heavy smoker. It will give you a much better chance of quitting. And go for nicotine salts if you can (any decent vape shop can help) as they are smoother and wont feel like your throat is being ripped out.

Then once you get the cravings under control you can start lowering the nicotine content. Just my 2 pennies worth but I have plenty of experience.

"I started 2 weeks ago. I can’t completely stop but gone from 20/30 a day to 3 (maximum has been 5) I’m happy with that for now. Can’t believe I was spending £90 a week on fags! I’ve put all that money in a little pot just for me "

Don’t kid yourself, the only way to stop is to STOP, cutting down doesn’t work, your 3 or 5 will be blown out of the window when you’ve had that bad day and you’ll be back on your 20/30 before you know it.

Set yourself a date, get all the help you can, set short term targets to begin and tell Yourself

‘I will never smoke again’

And then join the millions of people who are all ex-smokers.

Thank you

It's still a battle but it's one I'm not going to loose.

Having your first drink and passing the test is a massive win, well done.

Good luck, I’ve tried many times but am now resigned to being a smoker for life or until it gets banned completely

The fella went cold turkey and said the first 2 weeks were the hardest. Tried all the patches but didn't work. He said after 2 weeks it's about breaking the habit, not the addiction.

Perpignan and cap

Stick the patches on your eyes, then you can't find your cigs?

Thank you for all the support. My 3D friends are just as supportive as my online ones and I couldn't do it without them x

(Sounds like a bafta acceptance speech)

Absolutely this. I went cold turkey as well and found the hardest times were down to situation and not the actual craving for a smoke. Like at the pub with a beer, or after a meal I used to like a port and a smoke, these habits were harder to break than simply not buying any cigarettes. Good luck OP it will be worth it.
