Fortunately my parents raised me with no religion as they wanted me to choose for myself as an adult. I know a few Jahovah's witnesses. No issue with them but it's sad seeing the ones with kids miss out on Christmas. The whole refusing their kids blood transfusions thing is a bit of a sore spot though.

It's a manipulative cult that uses manipulation and isolation to brainwash people and indoctrinate their children...often hushing things up that should be dealt with by the authorities. I don't know a single brave 'escapee' who hasn't suffered from the JWs cultish ways...and i know several.

The m_mbers of these organisations and cults can be the sweetest people but I don't generally think too highly of the leaders of huge organisations pulling in so much cash. I had 2 male schoolfriends who I hung out with at theirs but the family didn't like my non-traditional gender ways that much, perhaps as I was becoming a potential fuck toy for young horny men.

I don't think there's perhaps too much difference between these and Mormons, Scientologists etc.

Generally if something seems unlikely, I'll continue with a healthy scepticism. I'd expect leaders of a religion to be. At the coalface, helping people in dire troubles, helping to clean, feed them by hand etc.

Unfortunately too many people have bought into the lie that they have to respect everyone's beliefs -no matter what those beliefs might be

If religious people want to keep claiming that their beliefs are more important to them than anyone else beliefs then I'm going to need to see a bit evidence of this conveniently invisible god of theirs

Dangerous ground this, history is filled with religious arguments of one sort or another just look at history. Always someone telling others that their God is better than your God and And will kill you to prove it.

Once again it "should" be down to the individuals own personal choice Which path to follow and what they believe. We have our own beliefs as we are sure others have.

I'm an ex JW.

That'll make me very unpopular on here now no doubt. Maybe I should delete my profile now.

Say that and most people run a mile. They think it's a cult.

I don't agree with kids being made to follow religion when they are too young to comprehend it and make a choice on it.

I walked away at 16 sticking two fingers up at it all.

You know why?

Because when they learned who caused all my bruises all they did was quote the bible at him. Didn't report it, hid it and when social services got involved they did not like it that an outside organisation were used.

Quoting the bible didn't stop him.

They then disfellowshipped (banned) him for something else and not what he did to me.

If you ever watched the panarama programnes about them hiding child abusers trust me it was pretty spot on.

I'm an ex jw too. I'm aware of their fucked-up-ness. They still make me feel sick too. I can't handle seeing their children on the street, knowing what sorts of things they're hiding. To some extent, it's not even hidden either, just people don't know what the community is really like.

"I have some in the family. Give them a pretty wide berth. I respect anyone's right to believe what they like, although the blood transfusion element troubles me.

What about if it damages their children?"

I didn't say I respected the consequences of anyone believing what they liked, that I'd support them in it, or that they get to inflict it on people who can't consent.

People have freedom of belief. I respect their freedom. I don't respect the beliefs.

"I'm an ex JW.

To some extent, it's not even hidden either, just people don't know what the community is really like."

Just like any other religion, community

I could rant about so much of it, and I'd probably end up angry. I can't stand seeing the children either. I'm with you on that. I feel very strongly about kids and religion to a point where I'm sure I'd offend. I just don't think any child should be made to follow religion at all until they are old enough to comprehend it enough to make that choice should they wish to... And it's their choice not anyone else's. Same with religion.

And football teams lol!

I spent me childhood restricted by them people, couldnt celebrate anything at all, made to sit out of things, couldn't read books or watch TV programmes because of content. And was bullied practically everywhere I went for being one... When I never had a choice in it.

No child should ever go through that imo.

Its just my opinion but it never ever change no matter what anyone says.

Personally haven’t been involved (each to their own, would never dismiss the beliefs of anyone else when I don’t know the first thing about them) but I do rem_mber the local group going around the houses promoting their faith when I was younger.

To be fair, they had a good tactic (if that’s the right turn of phrase) as they would usually send a very attractive blond lady to most doors who would start chatting to the home owner, before someone else would then enter the discussion.

I of course didn’t get blindsided by that tactic. Well, not after the fifth time, anyway ...

"We have a Kingdom Hall a few streets away, they regularly knock along our road.

Except my house... I've been blacklisted!

I don't understand why they do it. No one from any other religion knock on my door."

Me and my cousin had to go knocking on doors together in our mid teens. We really weren't into it by then and were looking for a way out.

Anyway, one afternoon we knocked on a door and a mild mannered student answered. My cousin started her little spiel about the kingdom of god and when she'd finished the guy very politely said he wasn't interested. My cousin said 'That's alright. Neither am I really,' and just walked off! I just stood there laughing and casually eyeing up the student who was stood there in just his pants. Must've been that day when I realised that my interests lay elsewhere.

It's a total headfuck isn't it. Made to feel bad for so many things as a child and like you have sinned. It's awful. And that's the worst bit of it all for me. The amount of things that headfucked me and made me feel like I was bad.

While other kids did far far worse and some of those things were to me. You end up thinking how the hell can they get away with it but apparently I'm bad because of something far more trivial.

Like... I was reading a book, this was primary school. Halfway through it turned out to be a story involving a ghost. It gave no clues of this in the blurb. So I had to stop reading it and get another. I rem_mber not wanting to and wanting to finish the book but reluctantly went through the selection to find another. Only most of them where not allowed. I rem_mber getting really upset and then walking away from the bookshelf thinking what's the bloody point. I was primary school!!! And I felt like I'd been bad Coz I read a story with a ghost in it...... I think that's the first moment I developed a dislike to the whole thing. It made me miserable. I wouldn't do that to any child. It's bloody awful. They should be encouraged to read. Not made to feel like they've sinned.

I'm an ex jw well I was brought up in it. Like has been said above I walked away giving the normal 2 finger salute. Only I did it at 13ish. I just point blank refused to go anymore. From that I had endless meetings with the elders with me not buddging an inch. The outcome was I was obviously the black sheep of the family and was rebelling. I was a teenage adolescent nothing more. Again as said above I seen my mates doing all kinds much worse than I'd of dreamed of but that matters not. I was promptly placed into a kids home and there I rotted till almost 17 even though my sister from day 1 wanted to adopt me. They let her when I was virtually out of there control anyway but I digress. I'm now a 51 year old bloke and have done all the reflecting I'm ever likely to and my conclusion is this. No matter what religion or anything else come to that there's good and bad as there are good and bad ppl in the world. I more than most should hate them but no I honestly don't. If they knock on my door I'll chat with them for as long as they like as I rem_mber them damn scripture just as well as they do more in some cases. On the whole I see them as inherently good ppl but sadly extremely misguided. Accusing them of being child m@lesters and the like is just wrong or at least it is unless your accusing them all of it because it's riff in them all. How long has the church be hiding that shit and many of them abusing kids with the same background as me with nobody and alone.

Do you wish the beliefs of the organisation had been challenged more?

Instead of people just saying 'oh it's their religion so we better not question it too much'

I wish, my friend, that it was illegal to indoctrinate children. If you're an adult, do what the fuck you like, but don't go messing around with children's heads.

You can literally hijack a child's mind. Many of my friends minds were hijacked. Even now, they are trapped in an intangible set of limits, to which they won't attempt to break out of.

I wish the religion was investigated and those caught manipulating children should be punished. I got lucky, but my friend's didn't. Honestly, the cult is evil. It extends extreme control over willing families too.

I hear you

Unfortunately it seems over the last few years it's become extremely hard to criticise religion without a huge fuss being made

I guess thats the intention tho. Shut down criticism before it even starts

Politics and religion. You gotta laugh what a state ppl get in over it

Indeed. But while it's perfectly acceptable to criticise somebodies politics it seems that we've all become afraid to criticise their religious beliefs "

So true

The belief's? You mean the their belief of the great tribulation that will occur before armageddon comes and those remaining get everlasting life on paradise earth?

I wish the extremes they go to were challenged more. And how much they hide things and try and deal with it in house. "

This is why it worries me that criticism of religion is slowly being shut down

I think there should be a level of checks on people that are leaders in religions and it concerns me greatly that there isn't. At the very least there should be a safeguarding aspect towards children.

It's not just one religion religion that needs it either. They all do.

I could go off on a tangent on this but I won't on here. But the acts some people are encouraged to do and that harm or kill other people in the name of religion shouldn't be happening. There's nothing to stop it though.

My nan(dad's mum) was a JW for as long as I rem_mber,but she must of become one in her later life as my grandad on the other hand was an atheist so there house was always a battle field.

My mother's parents were Roman Catholic and raised my mother as one

My dad on the other hand raised us with no religion and always made it clear it was up to us if and when we decided to pick a religion and made it clear to all the grandparents that no one should try to influence us in any way and the only one who ever tried to ignore that rule was my nan, she would buy me books with there story's in and other things to try influence me and my siblings it never worked, we would still turn up with happy Sunday cards and gifts for mother's Day or if her birthday fell on say a Thursday a happy Thursday card ect

But one thing I will give them when she was bedridden and dieing of cancer the people from her "HOUSE" were amazing at looking after her

Billions of our money, the non-believers in specific sky fairies, is given tax free to these religions. If 1 religion is the truth, the rest is BS and yet these organisations - most of them BS peddlars, are given £billions of our money.

Rather like the joke I heard years ago about the 2 Jehovah's Witnesses who knocked on a door early one evening.

Occupant opened the door, said he was having his tea, but invited them in to join him.

They feasted well through three courses, good wine and a few drinks, but after 2 hours, the home owner asked, "what did you want to say?"

Reply was, "Errm, we've forgotten, we normally have doors slammed in our faces! We haven't been trained for getting past that point!"

I could go on and on with them. Last time they called, I was thinking "Aha! Watch this!"... But you know what, I opened the door to a child and felt physically sick. I can't be nasty to a child, plus, I feel extremely sorry for them. I've been in that situation. What happens then is that I just feel distressed and can't talk.

There used to be some stood most days at the station I commuted from. I spoke to them once and explained I was an atheist but respected what they were doing, admired that they were out in all weathers and wished them well. After that we always said good morning and acknowledged each other.

I'm kinda glad that that's my Jehovah's Witness anecdote rather some on this thread. I'm not sure it's okay to revel in being rude and treating people like shit.

Lizzie’s sister converted to being a JW 7 years ago after they knocked on her door and she let them in.

I’ve been asked not to talk to her about religion anymore, after I’ve asked questions to try and understand certain aspects which suggest they pick and choose what they believe in/act upon, even though that is one of their reasons for denouncing all other religions.

A lot of things seem convenient to them when it suits.

Masterbation is forbidden as is porn and anything else like it. No prostitutes or escorts. No dating sites or sex sites, swinging. No toys, no oral, no anal, even wearing sexy lingerie is forbidden. Kinks of any kind are out along with clothing that would go with them etc.

Wear big pants and bras in plain colours you're good.

Women aren't allowed to wear trousers for the door to door work or meetings. Strictly heterosexual everything else is unnatural and treated like its the work of Satan and not as God intended.

No sex and nothing sexual (kissing and hugs allowed) before marriage or you get shunned (disfellowshipped) though you can only be disfellowshipped if you're baptised.
