Hendrix? Santana? Clapton or is it Janice from the Muppets? |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |
I'm pretty sure Janice played bass, but I digress....
David Gilmour has a very particular recognisable sound
Tom Verlaine also but the daddy guitar can be no other than Hank Marvin! The most unlikely guitar hero ever but nobody will dispute his influence, not even tarnished by association with Cliff, looking like Walter the Softie and being a Jehovah's Witness lol |

Django Reinhardt.
Leant how to play to a high level, lost the use of several fingers in a fire, relearnt how to play better than before- creating a new style and influencing numerus other guitar players since.
He was invited to play with Duke Ellington, Dizzie Gillespie & Louis Armstrong....accomplishing all this before his death at 43 |

I once say Rory Gallagher perform, not too long before he’s replacement liver gave up
I was near the front of the crowd and in the middle of a guitar solo he grabbed my pint, drank every drop then gave me back the glass and carried on.
That’s why he’s liver packed up |

Thing is they all have their own styles and many play so differently that I couldn't t give one particular..agree with above poster about Hank and John Williams...a great guitarist could be seen as someone able to play classical piece, Rodriguez guitar concerto..or it could be blues such as Gary Moore, Albert or BB King..where does Stevie Ray Vaughan slip..blues maybe. Angus and fast Eddy punch hard rock and fast...Jimmy Page and Hendrix pushed new boundaries using cello bows or feedback from amps...love Robin Trower...so many but none necessarily betier than others just different |

And quotes Jeff Beck as being a massive influence - some say the riff from Rock N Roll was first played by Beck when they were in the Yardbirds together - Clapton also name checks him as someone he’s always admired as a guitarist.
I’m a massive AC/DC fan so this isn’t me being a fanboi, but as a guitarist myself I am always blow away with his technique and his light touch on the fretboard - a real guitarists guitarist |

Difficult one really. I not a fan of gypsy jazz, but I saw a documentary where 10 year-old kids schooled in that tradition where playing stuff that most rock guitar legends couldn’t do if they lived to 150.
Taste and tone are more important, I think.
I don’t think Mick Taylor has been mentioned - he’s a very underrated electric player. Personally, the guy who blew my mind when I saw him is an mostly acoustic player - John Renbourn (once of Penttangle). Blues, jazz, folk, Indian ragas etc all in the mix. |

But that’s just 12 bar blues, power chords etc. far from technically difficult, don’t get me wrong the reason I picked up a guitar was to be able to play AC/DC -Dirty Deeds (Done dirt cheap) was the first song I learned - but I was more a fan of Malcoms rhythm guitar playing. And as iconic as Chucks/Angus duck-walk is, it doesn’t actually make their playing any better
Aren’t people really just picking their favourite guitarists rather than ‘best’ - who could even judge it objectively?
Some of the classical guitarists are mind blowing - shredders ain’t got shit on those lot; yet how many people could name any? Miloš Karadaglic possibly at a push |

No, my favourite guitarist is Dave Gilmour. My first and definitive answer was Jimmy Page. I mentioned Chuck Berry because of his innovation, not his chops. You're talking pure musical ability which is something specific. I take your point though. |

I think there’s a lot of truth in that - in my opinion electric guitars are much more forgiving and practically “play themselves” in comparison. It’s much easier to be a whizz on them.
“Best” is impossible really though, and I tend to just think of “favourites”

Those classical guitars really are a completely different beast to any electric; wide necks, high action, thicker strings, no effects or amplifier to hide poor fingering (ooh matron!) |

There are some incredibly talented guitarists who play spectacularly but not in a song structure, and there are those whose solos fit the piece perfectly. I prefer the latter type on the whole.
It's also a matter of genre. Rock guys get more fame as has been noted.
Some favourites of mine not yet mentioned above then, are
Shirley Tetteh
Chuck Prophet
Eddie Hazel

I was near the front of the crowd and in the middle of a guitar solo he grabbed my pint, drank every drop then gave me back the glass and carried on.
That’s why he’s liver packed up"

Jeff Beck /thread
A bass is a guitar is it not?"
Well of course it is (play bass myself) but I think it was inferred as to mean lead guitarist - and that poster does have a history of trying to be the thread clown.
But if we’re including bass players then I’ve got a massive list i could happily add |

Hard to state a single one as depends on the period. However Steve Vai is good contender. |

Electric has to be Hendrix but I have read somewhere that Nuno Bettancourt has been considered the greatest of all time.
Acoustic is Colter Wall, hands down, especially in ‘The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie’ |

I always liked Ritchie Blackmore.
Jimmy Paige and Dave Gilmour would be high up there along with Clapton and Hendrix.
The one that is often forgotten in Paul Kossof, probably because he died far too young.
Of the younger generation Joe Bonnamassa would take a lot of beating. |

"No mention of Jeff Hanneman either. Kerry King has a lot to do with Slayer's signature sound but it was Jeff who wrote all those classic songs, the first ones you think of when you think of the band. "
RIP Jeff - sadly missed |

Indeed.....shocked when I heard it, both he and Dimebag went too soon. To be fair, Dimebag was another stunning guitarist.

The day he went I had my ex husband AND my boyfriend in tears they've got the same Still Reigning memorial t shirt. I'm glad I got to see them before he went, they're a stunning live band. |

HENDRIX no contest.
But yes, Vai is a massive wanker, probably the finest masturbatory playing, like ever. (He says so himself...true story)
Lots of valid points raised, Blackmore is a fave...
James Dean Bradfield is a fucking live performance God, many are but he carries his entire band (before the big tape machine ruined it)
I always wondered if the stories of Jimi having a gargantuan penis were true, I mean, who needs slow hands if you got big ones....?

I think it’s impossible to name the greatest because it’s music, it’s personal taste.
Personally I tend to favour bluesy rock so Hendrix, Rory etc |

I agree and to quote Mark Knopfler “Mind he’s strictly rhythm, he doesn’t want to make it cry or sing”.
I really rate Keith Richards but he’s a totally different style of player - rhythm - to most of the lead guitarists on this list. |

Jeff Beck is often touted as the guitar players guitar player and he’s an incredibly talented, progressive and technically accomplished guy but I just find his stuff boring |

I find he plays far too loud, he drowns out all of the other musicians that he’s on stage with. |

"Django Reinhardt.
Leant how to play to a high level, lost the use of several fingers in a fire, relearnt how to play better than before- creating a new style and influencing numerus other guitar players since.
He was invited to play with Duke Ellington, Dizzie Gillespie & Louis Armstrong....accomplishing all this before his death at 43"

Depends on style.
Eddie Van Halen revolutionised rock guitar.
Jimi Hendrix was amazing.
Billy J Gibbons is an incredible blues player.
Django Rienhardt was a phenomenal jazz player.
So many styles all with outstanding guitarists. |

Anyone talking Johnny Marr or any of that bollox needs to get in the bin!
The only player on that list anywhere near Johnny Marr is Hendrix, you need to get in the bin "
Marr is good and rights a good riff and i'm a madchester type of guy but come on he's not in the same league as Steve Ray Vaughn be real watch him play voodoo child (slight return) when he playes the guitar behind his back ! |
