.... who don’t listen.
I’ve just joined a gym for the first time in my life. I don’t need to lose weight, just want to keep toned up as I’ve stopped dancing. I really, really want to do weights but the idiot trainers just laughed at me and said I should do other stuff involving ropes to grab and leaning forwards and backwards. Not fun at all.
Gym bunnies. Can/should I be doing weights? I need advice so I can go and give them hell... |

"If you were a regular dancer then you are probably self motivated so you don't need any help from the trainers, so just do your own thing. "
Nothing to do with motivation, just which equipment to use at the gym. |

Staying strong is a very good thing. It helps keep weight under control too by causing you to burn more calories to feed your muscles even when you are not exercising.
They have no business telling you that you shouldn't do weights. |

Yes! This is what I needed to hear. So you’re doing just the weight machines? |

All depends on what your goals are. If you plan to do weight training, you may end up putting a bit more weight. This os because muscles are heavier than fat, and your muscle will retain a lot more water. |

Yes and sometimes the free weights. I don’t have much weight on it though. I’m not looking to build muscle. I do cardio too but yes I do the weights and I’ve noticed a difference x |

I would advise getting a good PT if you are new to the gym. They cost a bit, but totally worth it. |

There are benefits to both weights and body-weight exercises (TRX- ropes).
What I would say is if you don’t enjoying doing what they tell you to do then you won’t do it so it is pointless.
Toning up is best done by doing light to medium weights with higher repetitions, this will give you greater muscle endurance. Heavier weights with lower repetitions will give you greater muscle strength.
I hope that helps.

I'm an ex dancer and lift weights. The only thing I will say is to be careful around the extra flexibility you have. In the beginning you'll have a lot more mobility than your usual beginner but not always the strength to match it. It's good to maintain that mobility though so you might need to start with lighter weights than others as you'll be moving through a greater range of motion. I also stretch lots after to keep my flexibility as my muscles heal. I did find however that I had remarkably strong hamstrings. I'm guessing all the years of jumping maybe. |

Agree. She could even mix it up by starting with heavier weights lower reps and by decreasing the weight with higher reps subsequently. |

Large majority of PTs don't know their arse from their elbow and are completely useless.
There is nothing wrong with the ropes and the like but saying you should be doing that over weights is not very professional.
Do what you want and enjoy.
Free weights would always be my advice as you engage more muscles over machines but if you just want to keep in shape machines will do just fine.

As a woman, you need to learn to focus on the gym around your ovulation cycle. Certain times in the month you will lose weight and other times you'd need to do twice as much as a man to do so. Just the differences in hormones find information about that first.
Second, it's all about learning the basics. No fancy equipment needed, if you start just lifting weights without warming up properly you will pick up an injury.
Third meal prep is key
Fourth sleep is essential |

I would disagree. There are good PTs and not so good ones too. You pay peanuts, you may get monkeys. I have been using a PT for over 12 yrs. He is bloody good. I wouldn't push myself so hard if he wasn't around. That's my opinion. |

I didn't say there aren't good PTs, there are, I know a good few.
Cost of a PT does not reflect in their ability either.
I could wipe the floor with all of the PTs in a gym a use.
I still stand by my statement that the large majority are useless. Get people doing ridiculous exercises, squatting on balls and the like, half squats, teaching very poor form.

I would say that 4 out of 5 PT's don't really know much about training and nutrition.
So next time he tells you something keep that in mind and do your own research. |

The problem is that I know absolutely nothing about gyms and gym equipment. Zilch, nada, nichts. For total newbies the YouTube videos are just overwhelming and what Lacey said about warmups, didn’t even think of it.
I wouldn’t recognise a good PT. If he had a buff body, that would be credentials enough and that’s just stupid... |

Instead of looking perplexed how about you find out the scientific studies that discuss it. Always train smart and affective or wonder why sometimes it's harder to lose weight. |

I agree. Good PT's will help you maintain form and technique. You got to find the right one. Even after 15 yrs, I sometimes struggle to get the technique right which can lead to injuries. Good luck with your gym and please keep us posted! |

It can definitely be intimidating at first. Especially when you feel lost and clueless and are faced with a room full of big, scary he men (though you quickly learn they're mostly big softies behind all that muscle )
Yeah my PT doesn't have a buff body but he did used to be very overweight and has totally transformed himself and is now an absolute machine. He doesn't and never will look like the PTs in their 20s though who have mostly only ever been in good shape. People who train for strength also aren't always the biggest and buffest. A friend of mine's partner is a British champion powerlifter but is far from the beefiest guy I know. Different people train for different things though. Some PTs can adapt depending on your personal goals but some in my experience seem overly focused on aesthetics and it gets a bit old telling them constantly that just because you're a woman it doesn't mean you want to lose weight. Also doesn't feel so nice being always made to feel you need to. |

I joined a gym to work on core strength and toning .. I'm also a dancer, so have good general fitness /physique and am not trying to lose weight
I am doing rowing machine, then free weights: bicept curl, sitting shoulder oress, bench press , flys and tricept things
I'm also doing an arm pull down machine and leggoress
The difference is already visible
There is also a website offering a free 15 mins a day plan, that is one of the best things i ever did.. Pm me if you want the website (against rules to post here? ?)

Weights are for everyone. While I personally run screaming from the idea of low weight high reps, it is what some people want. I think (unless I'm showing off, lol) the overall effect of my weight training is a "toned" look, and I certainly ignore any advice aimed at women to that effect.
The TRX is a useful adjunct, but if you want a weights routine, then don't be discouraged from it. |

Don't be afraid of moving gyms. Honestly. I knew I wanted to incorporate weights into my routine. Went to one gym where I was scoffed at because I asked, in fact the guys words were "but you're an over weight woman, they aren't for you... You want these cardio machines here"
I found my PT through word of mouth. She's seen me through not being able to walk 500m (I broke my back many years ago, the doctor talking about going from me using my cane to using a wheelchair kicked me up the arse to doing something...)
Now I have done tough mudder, total warrior, do parkrun weekly, snowboard, climb...
I'm still overweight but my god I'm fitter than I've ever been... She has worked miracles, and she's the quietest woman, hard as nails but looks like she would snap in a strong breeze...
Also wears the baggiest 'hiding' clothes. I couldn't have found a better fit for me.
But that's the thing, I had to move gyms to find her. I went from a gorgeous gym/spa to a cheap chain... I pay more now I have my PT than I did before but oh so worth it. |

What a couple of idiots - of course you should be doing weights. Even if your goal was purely cardio fitness, which I know it's not, some weight training would be helpful to improve running performance etc. I'm yet to meet a trainer who suggests weights have no part in a training programme!
I know it can be a bit daunting knowing where to start (I certainly feel/felt it), and idiots like that can make you feel self conscious, but keep going. There are a ton of good online programmes/training guides if you wanted something to follow (or get a PT if the purse strings will stretch to it)! Good luck! |

For what its worth,
Most of the gym staff/PT’s often try to tell new members they are doing something wrong in the hope you will ask their advice and pay for sessions.

You should definitely lift muscle helps burn fat helping to control your body fat you should be lifting to failure the muscle can only grow if you break it down and if you feed it muscle growth is in how much protein you eat
But you can only build tone by building muscle
I have to eat 3/4 times the normal gym goer to build my muscle |

I do a ladder system. It guarantees that I am always improving.
I will take one exercise for example, Bench press.
I go over, I put weights on the bench. For the first few days I figure out what weight I can do 12 reps at. Lets just say 10kg.
So I do 12 x 10kg. Then I add 1kg to each side and I do as many as I can, lets say I do 10 x 12kg. Then I add 1kg to each side and do as many as I can and I do 8 x 14kg, and then the last 4th set, might be 5 x 16kg.
Then the next time I add 1 rep to every set except the first one, 1st is only ever 12. When the second set reaches 12, that becomes my starting weight.
so...
12 x 10kg
11 x 12kg
9 x 14kg
6 x 16kg
next day
12 x 10kg
12 x 12kg
10 x 14kg
7 x 16kg
next day
12 x 12kg
11 x 14kg
8 x 16kg
6 x 18kg
You wont get huge, but it will add muscle and it will cut fat if youre eating right. It will also increase your metabolisim.
The best thing about this exercise routine is, I can nearly always squeze out one more rep, just one more. I can then use walking as my cardio. If you walk at a brisk pace for an hour, for example home from the gym, you will burn fat the whole way without interfering with the weight training.
People think you will get "Huge" or "Bodybuilder" like this, but I am not huge, I just have a "beach body" and i did it from weight training. |

If you want to use free weights and are unsure what to do then I recommend going to a good pt to get your form dialed in.
Machines etc are good, but I’d always go with free weights and doing compound moves like squat, bench press, overhead press and deadlifts |

Of course you can do weights.
All the ropes and tyres etc. are remnants of the CrossFit fad that started I guess 10 years ago. I guess that such exercise regimes are all that some personal trainers will have experience in, so they just go to what then know. |

I've just been pre warned my session tonight will be barbell complex based which probably also means the airbike. After being ill for two weeks.
I'm going to die.
At least you'll look good when you Cark it "
My sweaty mess will try and remember that as I'm dying on the gym floor - thanks! |

If your goal is to tone up (or remain toned in your case), you should vary what you do. The body will adjust and adapt so that if you do the same thing all the time it will do that thing very well with the minimum effort, which is exactly the opposite of what you want.
As others havd said, if you want to tone you should have high reps, 3 sets of 12 - 15, and the weight you should choose should get difficult at the end of each rep.

"I don’t lift weights at all. Try pilates for toning, core strength and balance. Or high reps low weight."

"Of course you can do weights.
All the ropes and tyres etc. are remnants of the CrossFit fad that started I guess 10 years ago. I guess that such exercise regimes are all that some personal trainers will have experience in, so they just go to what then know."
Interesting... |

Follow the likes of Stef fit or Emily Skye on Instagram.
I was always a bouncer. Trampettes all the way. Lost 4 stone.
Started lifting weights last November and the difference is like no other! I would 100% encourage you to try lifting.
Some women are a bit worried but read up about it. And look at all the examples splashed over Instagram.
Was the best thing I ever did!
Scarlett.

"Staying strong is a very good thing. It helps keep weight under control too by causing you to burn more calories to feed your muscles even when you are not exercising.
They have no business telling you that you shouldn't do weights.
They want to work out a programme for me?"
Low weight, high reps and consistency. Hard Swimming ( not just a gentle float) is no impact ( good for joints) and immensely good for all muscle groups toning and CV obviously. Everyone can do weights no matter size shape or age and everyone has to start somewhere PM me if you’d like I’m more than happy to talk about any questions x |

If you do 4 sets you’ll see a difference in no time. Matter of weeks |

"You should definitely lift muscle helps burn fat helping to control your body fat you should be lifting to failure the muscle can only grow if you break it down and if you feed it muscle growth is in how much protein you eat
But you can only build tone by building muscle
I have to eat 3/4 times the normal gym goer to build my muscle "

"Of course. They’re not just for building muscle. I do, for toning. Less weight more reps x" .
Same. I do classes with low weights and high reps. Great for toning but has the added advantage of slight muscle definition. |

Yep. Hurt like hell and my session with my partner tomorrow is going to be tough going but I am determined to regain lost ground so I'm training hard.
I'm also sensible. I'll push myself so far but I know my limits. I'll stop or talk to my PT about dropping my weights slightly if I need to. |

"If you were a regular dancer then you are probably self motivated so you don't need any help from the trainers, so just do your own thing.
Nothing to do with motivation, just which equipment to use at the gym."
Unless you have an injury, theres no reason you shouldn't lift weights.
For the most bang for your buck, build sessions around multi-joint exercises (Squat, Deadlift, Bench, Row, OHP). The machines are quite good for isolating a single muscle group you want to work on and may provide useful accessory work around your main lifts.
Dead good for helping to prevent osteoporosis too. |

Not sure why people are specifically recommending low weight, high rep, in all honesty.
"Toning up" is the process of losing body fat to add definition.
High rep exercises are good for building muscle mass when eating in a surplus, and ok at preserving it in a defecit, but you might well progress further doing lower reps in a deficit which can help adherence because you feel you are progressing still.
If you are a beginner, good places to start are 5x5 programs. |

5x5 is good but after seeing some interesting sights at the gym this morning...
Please spend a little bit of time with a PT. Just a session or two, get them to focus on your form or you can do more damage than good...
Also you won't look like the twonk next to us this morning. |

Of course you should do weights.
As a woman, doing load bearing weights is vitally important for maintaining bone density as we get older.
I had a mastectomy and reconstruction using muscle from my back, recently damaged my shoulder and yet somehow....I still manage to lift free weights and use the machines.
Get stuck in there girl...dont losten to those dopey trainers.

".... who don’t listen.
I need advice so I can go and give them hell..."
Anyone can do weights.
And depending on how you use them with diet it's a good way to keep toned. |

I’d agree. Before weights I was a cardio only girl, definitely more toned since adding weights to the mix x |
