My man Fury Whip asked a question that deserves a whole thread. Who are your favourite drummers?
I've picked three but there are so many more I could mention. Nick Mason, a master of subtlety and atmosphere. Keith Moon, pioneering, incredible to watch and a huge influence on my third choice. And Neil Peart, if I had to pick just one it would be the professor.
Looking forward to hearing yours |

John Bonham was incredible. Listen to "Dazed & Confused" to hear how he drove their sound!
Having said that - as a Genesis fan - I have to acknowledge Phil Collins. Also Carl Palmer. |

"Don't know why I thought I could only pick 3
Add Nicko McBrain and Dave Grohl to that list"
You can pick as many as you like, my friend. I need to add Ian Paice to mine |

"So many great drummers over the years: Dave Lombardo, Ian Paice and Cozy Powell to name but three."
Dave Lombardo is my sons hero, he loves watching drum cam clips of him. |

Me old man was a drummer most of his life playing in big bands and jazz bands.( taught me to paradiddle and more ). I was brought up on the likes of Louie Bellson and Buddy Rich. Fantastic in their day.
I tip me hat to any decent drummer , hardest worker in a band |

Nice to get a mention.
Dave Grohl, I learned playing along to him and Dale Crover from the Melvins. Dales style and technique is amazing. Igor Cavalera from Sepultura, Vinnie Paul from Pantera and Gene Hoglan from Death/Testament/Dark Angel etc are all drummers I look up to. |

Can't argue with any of the already mentioned but would like to add Dean Castranovo and Mike Portnoy. Both incridible musicians. Oh and the recently departed Pat Torpey, a massive influence on me! |

"Levon Helm
Charlie Watts
Ringo
Animal from the muppets
Oh, how'd I forget Levon?!
Gone but far from forgotten.
"
He always put the song first and was such a lyrical, restrained and tasteful drummer - and a great singer to boot.
Singing drummers is another thread |

"Joey Jordison.
Travis Barker.
Dave Grohl
And the criminally underrated Taylor Hawkins (when Dave Grohl has you has the drummer of his band.. you're damn good)."
Never seen Taylor as underrated. I've noticed hes quite humble and doent think hes as good as he is.
Travis Barker though, way overrated. Tre Cool from Green Day could drum circles around him and his tiny little toy drum kit. Dont mean be rude sorry, just have a bug bear with that guy. |

Taylor seems definitely underrated to me. He should be constantly up there in discussions as the best. And from a critic level is, but from an every day music fan level, I don't see it. Very humble though. Yeah.
Tre Cool is a good drummer, to be fair. He's definitely up there.
I just always liked Travis, and don't worry, you didn't come across as rude to me. Travis Barker may take offence but I didn't |

If you're going down a jazz path then Billy Cobham and Buddy Rich should get a mention. |

There are loads of drummers I really rate, Taylor Hawkins did a great session on Alanis Morissette's Jagged little pill tour, Will Calhoun of Living Colour is really funky, Stuart Copeland of the Police is so imaginative, Tico Torres of Bonjovi has a really cool Latin feel to his Rock styling.
Basically though, they're pretty much all great.

I saw Max Roach in Detroit holding us spellbound playing just a hi-hat.
Let me throw Tony Remi into the mix, for the afro-beatniks. |

....and the Mars Volta, amazingly followed up by Thomas Pridgen, but the first name on the greatest drummer sheet and the one that inspired the majority of the above is Buddy Rich, and you can’t mention Buddy without a nod to gene Krupa, two of the pioneers and powerhouses of the modern drummer.
And bonham, cause he’s a beast... |

No mention for Kenny Jones is a surprise.
The Small Faces
The Faces
then took over the drum kit in The Who following Moonies sad departure. You don’t get to play in bands like those without knowing what you’re doing. Sadly the only surviving member of the Small Faces now. |

Kenny Jones is a great shout. The Small Faces had to become The Faces when Rod and Ronnie Wood joined cos they were too tall and not small enough true story |

I’m currently driving myself nuts figuring out how the hell to re-train myself as a drummer to learn how to play this.
The technicalities of it are outstanding, even to play it as a hand exercise would be incredibly difficult.
To be able to play it with your feet is on another level.

"Rik Allen Def Leppard. Drumming with one arm, legend "
And the fact that the rest of the band waited for him to recover from such a traumatic injury speaks volumes.
I saw Def Leppard in 1981 when they were supporting Iron Maiden in Derby, they were all about 16 at the time and wearing stripey spandex lol |
