The original progenitors of heavy metal. This brummy band changed rock with the heavy riffs and haunting lyrics.
What are your top three songs from Black Sabbath and why? And who was the better frontman, Ozzy or Ronnie James Dio? Let the debate begin! |

Neon knights was a brilliant track that sounded amazing on Live Evil. Mob Rules was a brilliant rocker that made great use of Dio's voice. Symptom of the Universe had such a heavy riff |

Ozzy def best front man Dio too polished didn’t suit Sabbath at all in my opinion. Dio was great singer in his own right but Ozzy is Sabbath not doubt |

"Sabotage is my favourite album, but much like the Led Zep thread, it's almost impossible for me to name a favourite track "
You're given three picks this time |

Snowblind
Fairies Wear Boots
Sweet Leaf
Ozzy for sure but I only like Rainbow with RJD. He was a little guy with a fucking huge voice and he's sadly missed. I saw Maiden do Blood Brothers as a tribute to him round the time he passed. |

Dio was by far the better singer, but Ozzy was hands down the best frontman.
I preferred the first six albums to their later stuff. The last couple with Ozzy were a bit patchy, but the early stuff stands up well today. |

"I only listen to Ronnie James Dio Sabbath... I'm a heretic i know, but its just sounds epic.
Saw them on the 'Heaven & Hell' reunion tour a few years back - amazing.
"
Then i'm a heretic too as Dio has the best voice of any front man in metal, period. I like Ozzy but anything Dio sings from his era sounds so much better in my opinion! |

Its difficult to pin down 3 out so many. Each album had its sound and identity. Lord of this World and War Pigs would have to contenders. Sign of the Southern Cross from the Dio era. They did fucking great Heaven and Hell with Dio before he died. Bible Black has an awesome riff. They were due to play Bloodstock that year. Would have been the first time Id seen Dio play, ever. Was gutted. Zero the Hero from Born Again is another favourite. Cannibal Corpses' cover of that got me into Sabbath. Didnt like anything about 13. Thought that was let down after Heaven and Hell. |

I personally loved both Ozzy and Ronnie at the Sabbath helm (and let us not forget the always superb, Ian Gillan’s brief tenure at the front to).
Top three tracks?
Hmmmm....I think I’ll just put one in here as it is awesome enough to cover all three places

"Ozzy
Fairies Wear Boots
War Pigs
NIB
Black Sabbath
all their albums up to and including Never Say Die. Went off them a bit after Ozzy left the first time "
You ever seen Bill Ward talk about the time they played War Pigs atba concert and a bunch of disabled Vietnam vets got people to help them stand up to salute the song? It moves him to tears and I get why. Imagine being responsible for a song that means that much to people. Just amazing.
One of my favourite Ozzy quotes regarding Fairies Wear Boots : "I've got absolutely no idea what that song is about but apparently I wrote it" you have to love the crazy fucker |

I didn't know that about War Pigs but can believe it.

nyone ever find what that song is about? I did a cover of Holy Diver with my old band but couldn't get my head around the lyrics. Found a blog dedicated to the subject. Theory goes that RJD was tight with Jimmy Hoffa and supposedly Hoffa was at an after party that was on a boat on lake Michigan. Hoffa was off his tits and fell in the lake never to surface. RJD apparently carried the weight of the guilt and felt responsibility Jimmy Hoffas death. I mean, its probably a load of shite but when the blog dissected and broke down every part of the song it started to make sense. Great song to play live too |

The Wizard for the highly unlikely "all of a sudden, a Wizard walks by."
Almost all of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, couldn't pick just one track from there

I have to agree with your choices and you’re reasoning as to why Ozzie would be first choice. However Dio is one of my favourite Rock vocalists, so I loved his time with Sabbath. But I associate him more with Rainbow and Dio. |

Think you can be forgiven as we did spend some time Dio and Holy Diver
Where do people stand with drummers. Obviously Bill Ward is a fantastic sticksman but do we really believe 'no Bill no Sabbth?'
Also, did anyone else go to the Black Sabbath Home of Metal exhibition in Birmingham? |

I was fortunate enough to see bill play with them at ozzfest 2001 @miltonkeynes bowl, i dont think ill ever see anything quite as amazing as them playing with the fireworks set to go of to the beat, admittedly a massive achievement for the pyro crew but for bill to set rythm it was a precious moment in my life that ill never forget. |

1 Wheels of confusion. First Sabbath song I ever heard after a friend let me hear Vol 4 album, I was like, holy shit
2 Supernaut from the same album. The killer guitar riff says it all
3 Fairies wear boots. Just the way Ozzy sings it really
Out of Ozzy and Dio, Ozzy all day long |

I really am a heretic. My favourite sabbath album...which is a massively underrated metal album full stop, Is Dehumanizer.
Dio's vocals are amazing. Tony Iommy rediscovers why he's the riff king of metal, and the tracks are just brilliant. Anyone who appreciates metal in general should listen to it in its entirety |

Yeah, did the same. There was another my mum had but cant remember, might have been Roy Wood, that was pretty cool. Seemed like a waste putting all that art work on CDs if you cant see it. Was careless with a few of mine so if they got scratched I'd hang them on the wall. |

Dio has rocked for a long, long time
Now it's time for him to pass the torch
He has songs of Wilder Beasts and dangers
He has soared on the wings of a demon
It's time to pass the torch
You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you
We're takin' you to a home
But we will sing a song about you
And we will make sure
That you're very well taken care of
You'll tell us secrets
That you've learned
Your sauce will mix with ours
And we'll make a good goulash baby
Dio, time to go, you must give your cape and scepter to me
And a smaller one for K G, go, go, Dio, Dio
Rip ronnie. |
