2 day Xmas if not 3? & new years too?

Just wondered what you all thought about this.
I've always loved Xmas all my life. It's been the favourite time of year for me.
As an adult however this began to wane until last 5years (before I joined fab actually to blame fab lmao) ago when I realised 1 day for Xmas Day just wasn't and isn't enough.
Christmas eve is fine. 1 day to get everything bought last minute if need be and prepared.
But when Christmas day comes it comes and goes too quickly.
Families come from all over the country or the world to meet up on this 1 non-working day and then have to over come their over indulgence and hangovers or their familiar bonds to go back to work.
I've been feeling that 1 day for Christmas Day just isn't enough.
I have been thinking that a 2 day Christmas day atleast at the very least if not more would be perfect.
This way you can have 2 days to really celebrate and relax before getting back into the grind.
This way the Christmas week itself do be more festive and joyous.
Christmas will be a week to look forward to not a day.
I also feel a 2 day new years to be off work is productive too for all the same reasons.
Just as a 4 day week seems to boost productivity for employers and the economy of a nation as well as boost employer health and harmony I also believe it helps with family life and family bonding too and thus believe if not all national cultural holidays then atleast Christmas Day and New Years Day be a 2 day event.
What do you all think? |

"Christmas day and boxing day you mean?"
Good question.
I was thinking at first Xmas day and an extra day and boxing day be moved to another day.
Boxing day is St Stephen day too apparently so in a way boxing day itself can become Xmas day 2 and the day after (Dec 27) can then become the new boxing day that we would have to call something else since boxing day is referring to boxes I think given in churches as charity or something I read a long time ago.
So 27th could become Xmas sales day?
What do you think as I'm just stating ideas. |

Lots of businesses round here shut from a few days before Christmas till new year already, and some choose to remain open, I think the key word is ‘choose’. Businesses should be able to make these decisions themselves and not be legislated for. I work all through this period, including Christmas Day and new year, starting early doing the bare essentials and then buggering off but it can be a real pain when there is a problem and you find the company you need has shut down for a fortnight and only has emergency call out and charges that rate or worse just has recorded message saying they will be open in the new year.
There are also many people who rely on the extra money they can earn over Christmas and new year covering for those who prefer to take annual holiday at this time, so personal choice is the answer as it is now. If anyone really doesn’t want to work over this period then save up your holiday entitlement and use it then. |

As someone who works in retail so our shop is only closed on xmas day I just have this to say.
The amount of customers who come in on boxing day and say "omg I cant believe that you are open. You would think they would let you have an extra day at xmas".
Well f*ck off and stop shopping there on boxing day then. If they ain't making the money to be worth staying open then the arseholes will shut the shop and let us enjoy time with our families |

"What are you doing over Xmas?"
Me: "Working"
"Oh, but I bet you're looking forward to spending time with your family on Xmas day"
Me: "Just another day I'm afraid, we're open 365 days a year, have a sprout for me though"
"Fuck that you poor thing"...... then asks about booking a table.

Ive never come across a boxing day sale worthy of me feeling I got a bargain any more special then the bargains available all year round.
However your post gave me 2 thoughts:
1) As i've mentioned above moving the sale day to a day later would be worthwhile especially for you as someone that needs that extra day.
People will shop in the hope of a bargain always, human nature and you cant change a nation unless you change the law which is what this thread is hopeful about.
2) It might be prudent to realise for us all that since retail shopping according to the media rumourville we call the news, is suggesting is moving more to online shopping and there are less and less shops to shop in physically and to over come this I believe MPs have said on the news that restaurants and cafes will become the new hub of the highstreet, then it makes more sense that a longer xmas is both achievable and efficient so that when it does come to the XMAS SALES DAY (as ive been calling it here first) then there is both less of a rush on the highstreet but also more time to plan etc. |

When I was a kid we had twelve days of Christmas and didn't take the decorations down untill it was over. It was great. Lots of family and friends to visit or came to us.
However traditions change over time and many people don't seem to want that any more. |
