"Me too
Remember folks it's an adaptation not a faithful version. Things and people will be in that are not in the book and vice versa"
Absolutely, there have been many versions over the years, another must be a good thing - especially as we're going to steampunks in space next weekend, where Dave will be in his version of a war of the worlds themed outfit. |

As it's the BBC I expect it to be quite good adaptation of the book. I recently reread the book earlier this year, so I'm excited as well, to see it on the TV. The casting looks good as well
I truly hope it's successful as HG Wells story is certainly a great Family watch ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

I have already managed to watch most of this as it has already been broadcast in New Zealand and somebody managed to sneak it onto YouTube under a different title.
I too was really looking forward to this but I was really disappointed with it. There are very few scenes of the fighting machines, there’s no thunderchild and no parson Nathaniel. The story is told through the eyes of the reporters fancy piece ( he’s scandalously left his wife to live with another woman ) but the story is a real plodder and didn’t grip me as I was hoping it would. Towards the second half it starts jumping forward and backwards in time which actually becomes a little irritating. I will rewatch it and see if I enjoy it any better watching in better definition than a YouTube stream. I will be interested in this thread later to see everyone else’s opinions.

Ooo...didn't know about this
I loved the 1950's film but didn't care much for the 2005 remake, even if the alien juggernauts looked cool.
I'll have to check this out ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Not really put any spoilers in my summary, just mentioned a couple of aspects that were not included in the production. ![](/icons/s/2/halo.gif) |

They haven’t made a remake of the film. It’s a mini series. To be fair to them it bears no resemblance at all to either of the previous 2 war of the worlds films either. |

Adaptations of classic books get made and made again several times. This one hasn't been done for television in the UK since I don't know when. There was a First World War version done, re-imagining the story that way, about four or five years ago but I think I remember that as American.

I feel the same, no-one has quite got it right. Feels like it will end up like that series a few years ago - The Tripods.. |

I haven't read the book since about 1978 and just watch each adaptation as their own works. I'm not sure where they're going with the domestic storyline, except as a way of introducing Poldark's missus. |

Wanted to enjoy it.
1 episode in and to be honest, hasnt impressed in any way.
But to be fair - I listened to Jeff Waynes musical version when it was first released and fell in love with it. When you hit the perfect notes on the first try.....
Went to see the Jeff Wayne show last year and it was fantastic.
Will try to keep an open mind as much as possible and keep watching next week.

I think there is something in that. I heard the Jeff Wayne version in '78 and saved up to buy the album (I still have it even though I have nothing to play it on any more). I don't think any version I have seen has given me the same thrill I had with that album.

Not too bothered with the minor change in period setting. It's closer than anyone else has managed so far.
Similarly, I'm fine with them expanding on the characters. Wells' unnamed narrator was a very thinly sketched cipher and needed fleshing out if he was ever going to work on-screen. His wife/lover even more so.
I really wasn't keen on the way they handled the heat ray scene. The changes were jarring and unnecessary and the effects were quite poor. Ditching the enormous cylinder for a flying ball of disintegrating black goo? Hmph...
Also, what's the deal with the flash-forward post-apocalyptic "Red Earth" scenes? I'm assuming that's the Red Weed they keep focusing on? |

The effects felt like they were trying to give us a 1950s adaptation. I'll watch the next one and abandon if that doesn't keep me interested.

I've read on another forum that it's dire and typical BBC with them applying today's politically correct ideals to a different period in history, which is a shame as I was really looking forward to a faithful version of the original story, particularly if it resembled some of the fantastic artwork in the Jeff Wayne album cover.
It's such a great story and should be easy to make into a good film, yet they mess it up on every attempt. The Tom Cruise one started well but was ultimately a bit crap, and the 1950's one with the flying saucers instead of tripods is bad as well. |

Seriously panned here just cannot get into the film and still to finish it
I like my sci fi
Its not helped skipping backwards and forwards between the future to the past cant really see the point in that
whats the point in knowing whats going to happen before it happens
The levitating ball idiots do you think that if they could levitate a ball that they would levitate the ship instead of being a tripod being
Cant see the point of sticking in a man thats had an affair, A woman telling him where to stick it whats that got to do with a series or the film
Bbc are pure morons ruined a good film it would have been better to spend the money elsewhere than this drivel
I like the old one, tom cruise film wasnt that bad ive seen better and yes I have the record as well
not read the book though
just a really disappointing series might take a look at second part but no hopes there. |

Jeff Wayne pretty much has. He has animated sequences playing on screens all through the stage show and he recently ran an interactive VR experience in London that took you through the whole story. I imagine an animated movie will surface sooner or later. |

It's an adaptation not an exact copy. It means that the BBC will use some artistic licence to suit their needs. Anyone turning it on expecting it to be an exact but more modern remake are going to be disappointed every day of the week. |

Indeed.
With that said it was a boring, dull and quite frankly shit adaption. This only applies to how the episode went down in terms of plot and pacing, and just general vibe.
The actual creation of the show by the cast and crew is fine.
And I say this as somebody who will give any TV show a chance. |

They destroyed the story. Real shame. And the sets are some kind of joke, as it appears the aliens have strewn rubbish and rubble in the streets without actually damaging any buildings. |
