What makes you drink alcohol?

...or NOT as the case may be.
I know alcohol typically elevates mood because with fewer associations to bother us, we start living less in our heads, and more in the here and now. It's a way to relax after a hard day at work. It's a social or cultural thing to do and we do it because we like the taste.
I'm curious to know the reason why you drink (or don't). What do you get out of it? What's the reason (if any)? If you've quit or tried to stop but can't, then why?

Mainly due to the stresses of work. It’s an unwind. Sometimes I push it to far and it affects work.
Note to self; drink less. Live more.
Everyone is different I guess. |

I would only drink if I was on a night out...so maybe three times a year at most. I’d drink on Christmas Day but not get d*unk.
I haven’t drank since December as I was pregnant and now I’m breastfeeding. |

I enjoy a social libation, infrequently these days I have to say. I am not prone to regularly lone drinking at home, just odd glass of something.
I tend to avoid those who drink the bar dry if they can! |

I'm not a big drinker at all, social events only really and I don't go to many of them.
I get jittery if someone drinks regularly as my ex used to lie about drinking and the volume. It concerns me when people drink every day or almost every day and think that just because they aren't getting pissed every day that they don't have a problem.

As a DJ, I used to be out doing gigs most Friday and Saturday nights and couldn't drink due to having to drive there and be professional, so really got into the habit of NOT drinking.
On the odd occasion (that I can count on the fingers of one hand) that I've been d*unk, I never really enjoyed it |

I rarely drink. I don't like how it makes me feel and it interacts badly with a medication I take.
I choose to drink very occasionally to try something or for a special occasion, but even more occasionally to excess.
Those who judge me for getting a lemonade in the pub are generally not people I find myself enjoying spending time with. My body, my life, my choice. |

I'm a hangover virgin and have never been plastered before.
I enjoy drinking socially but know my limits and never go past them. Perhaps I like being in control of my actions / emotions and alcohol tends to strip people of that capacity.
My pragmatic, rational brain also considers this an expensive activity particularly when out. Why spend money to feel like crap afterwards? People are free to do as they please and more power to them, but it doesn't appeal to me. |

I’ve always asked myself this question from an early age. As we all know whiskey and Guinness have many many medicinal purposes and are know to cure many many health problems
As a child I would receive whiskey to cure the common cold. To alleviate tooth ache and to put me to sleep when mummy and daddy wanted to discuss future family developments
Guinness was provided by the Irish blood bank to increase your iron level after giving blood and is also recommended to pregnant ladies to help with the superior development of their children.
And I still can’t put my finger on when or why I began drinking. I’m sure one day I’ll figure it out |

In my late teens/20s I drank far too much , mainly as a confidence booster initially as I was ridiculously shy.
In my 30s the penny dropped I didn't have to get leathered to have a good time or to be interesting (to be honest in my heavy drinking years I was probably a pain as much as I was entertaining)
I do still enjoy a drink, but it's an occasional thing rather than a daily thing now.
I'm also as happy with fizzy water as I am with a glass of wine.
It's good to see there are more decent alcohol free drinks available in bars now too

I rarely drink much. I'm usually driving anyway. Even when I'm not, if I have more than a couple of drinks my mood tends to shift - sometimes I'll have a great time, more often I become even more morose and withdrawn than usual. |

I very rarely drink alcohol. I have never liked the taste or had any desire to acquire a liking for it.
I have been tipsy on a couple of occasions in the past and didn't like it. I find being able to walk in a straight line has a lot to be said for it. I have never had a hangover. I really don't get why being d*unk is appealing to so many.

"Usually to socialise but I'd do it now to stop feeling crappy "
I drink for both reasons but does it really help us stop feeling crappy? After it's worn off, we still feel crappy! I lost my dog a few weeks ago and I've been drinking to try and control my emotional state. I still feel crappy and the hangovers make me feel awful.
Sorry you are not feeling so good btw x |

My advice is if you think deep down there is an issue tell someone who you trust.
If you can't trust anyone enough then go to your nearest AA meeting
If you are able to drink socially and normally then crack on and enjoy xx |

People should never judge you for not wanting alcohol, they should totally respect your choices. When I tell my friends I will drive on a night out, they try to persuade me to get a taxi and drink but I don't always want to and I get a bit miffed when they try to pressure me into a boozy night. |

I haven't drank alcohol for 7 years now. I had a bit of a problem so took myself off to rehab for 4 months.
I guess I drank to suppress feelings/emotions that I didn't want to deal with at the time.
It doesn't bother me not drinking. It seems to bother some people that I don't drink. I tend just to distance myself from those people x |

I stopped drinking in February 2004 before I was legally old enough to drink and I've not touched a drop since, I don't care if others around me are drinking but what I can't understand is why people get really d*unk at swing meets or swing clubs, I personally will not play with anyone who is clearly d*unk |

I've never really drank heavily. Even when I was younger I would have one drink to everyone's three or four. Pl I've never liked pints of beer, larger, bitter etc.
The other thing I don't understand is why it doesn't matter what hobbies you have or what sporting events or gigs you go to people have to drink to enjoy it. Why can they not just enjoy the actual event etc without the drink?
Don't mind the very occasional Martini though. |

Stopped a little over 3 and a half years ago now. Used to really enjoy a drink. Often to excess. But, on top of the cost, becoming obese, developing (although I didn't know at that time) type 2 diabetes and a heart rhythm issue that was likely linked, it really started messing with my head.
If you can drink in moderation I envy you. |

Because I enjoy it. I rarely drink excessively and never to excess when my daughter is home.
A glass of wine or a glass of baileys in an evening helps me wind down at the end of the day but not enough to have any effect, and I just really like the taste.

Its odd that isnt it, when you say you don't drink and people either don't believe or try to get you to have a drink, a few times I've had people try to push me to have a drink and I'm like "I'm a alcoholic who has been sober since 2004, why are you trying to make me fall of the wagon, kindly fuck off"
But some people just generally don't know how to react, like when I first met my partner, he wouldn't have a drink coz I don't drink, I was like I'm far enough in to recovery (your always recovering never recovered) not to want or need any, I can sit surrounded by it and I don't want any |

I drink because I enjoy the flavours and smells of different beers.
I enjoy the process of brewing and developing recipes, and then seeing/tasting the results.
I only tend to drink half’s, I can try different drinks whilst keeping the volume of intake down.
I tend to go for the dark/black beers as they have the most flavour to them.

I was never a huge drinker, but enjoyed fine wine, cognac, a G&T...
Haven't had alcohol since February due to medication and, if I'm honest, I miss it.
If I had a drink now, I'd be such a cheap date.. |

I drink because I enjoy the taste and the effect. I rarely drink to excess, especially as the older I get the worse the hangovers are.
I also use alcohol as medicine when I’m poorly e.g. a hot toddy. I know it’s not making me any better, it just makes me feel slightly better. |

I’ve just returned from a lovely country pub in fact (and had a few pints which has left me pleasantly warm).
It was very pleasant indeed.....until I went in the gents and saw the bloody old style urinals of the ‘piss against the wall’ variety!
God, I haven’t seen one of those in years (and can’t say that I’ve missed them!) |

I used to drink a lot for the laugh.
But its a depressant and I dont know why people take so many depressants. I don't want to forget half the night, I dont want to numb myself or my mind.
When you go on old rave videos on youtube, you see hundreds of comments from people who took xtc, a stimulant saying things like "It was the summer of 89, me and my friends did x,y,z" crystal clear happy memories. But they dont want us living like that, they prefer us to not think, and numb our minds, and I just dont want a numb mind do dont drink. |

Nothing makes me drink. I drink for fun. I like to have a drink with a meal, I like to have a drink out with friends/ family. I like the taste. I like the relaxed feeling you get after having a drink. Nothing quite hits the spot after a tough day than a nice glass of something. I'm not drinking to numb any pain, or to fill a void in my life, I don't have to drink to have a good time but I do really enjoy it. I don't drink every day, mainly weekends, but I also don't beat myself up if I fancy a glass of wine on a school night!

I don’t drink to excess as I simply can’t stand the jaded feeling the next day. During my student days I was quite a drinker but I could take it then.
Now I’m more into sharing a few stories over a bottle of something pleasant in front of the fire.
Off to the Emirates at the end of the month and I plan to do it dry. |

Spending time in licensed premises is a good way to socialise . . . with people I know and with people I have yet to meet.
I live on my own and make it a rule not to drink on my own.
(Different if someone comes round, of course)
So when I feel the mood for some company and entertainment, I'll catch a bus and find somewhere nice to spend the time passing the time in the presence of others.

I'm not really a big drinker but enjoy having the odd glass of wine at home. Or when I'm not driving when I'm out I will have a few drinks. But since I started getting hangovers once I hit my mid 30s I never really have long drinking sessions anymore the hangovers aren't worth it. |

I don't drink anymore.
I've had nothing so far this year, or last.
The year before I had 3 glasses of wine all year.
Prior to that dry for around 15 years.
I used to drink way too much and it took me down a destructive path and things much more harmfull.
No more. |

I drink alcoholic drinks, be it beer, wine or spirits, because I savour the flavour
I don't drink to excess, and that's never appealed to me, though I'm not denying I have had a hangover on occasion.
There's little to compare with them, in the form of soft drinks.
At least some of the NABLABs are being brewed with more flavour and character nowadays |

I've not d*unk more than the occassional point for over 4 years. While I was never alcohol dependent I certainly had a very unhealthy relationship with it and had done since I first started drinking at I guess 15 or 16. I do miss it sometimes but it's rare. Have developed an intolerance of being around pissed people which is a pain but generally life is so much better |
