What single invention would you rate as the greatest, most ingenious and most useful ever?

As it's not possible to 'invent' electricity, I'll suggest Michael Faraday's discovery of magnetic fields around a conductor carrying a direct current and his inventions of electromechanical rotary devices which led to the ability to harness and distribute electricity, and the electric motor.

A reasonable point. It was advances in agriculture that eventually gave rise to a need for writing and maths, to keep records of how much grain, etc |

There is no one particular invention that is the greatest because on build on what is available at the time.
Without the computer what is the use of internet invention?
Without the internet, there will be no youtube
Without a road what is the use of car
Without cars, there will be no...
Without a plane, there will be no...
without electricity, there will be no... |
