Saying goodbye to your dog

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I've just come back from the vets after watching my dog due in my arms. I can't stop crying.

He had a massive stroke in the early hours and couldnt get back up on his feet again. It's so hard, you can't explain to them what's happening. They get so scared and there is very little you can do other than be there for them.

We had to make a very difficult decision and it's already tearing me apart inside.

I won't be replying to any comments and I'd really rather not deal with any Private Messages. It's all a bit too raw still.. I just wanted to get it off my chest.

I hope there is a heaven, because he deserves to be there.

I had this recently had two dogs die on the same day. I feel like my heart is broken and I can’t face even thinking of getting another as I feel it’s a disrespect to the ones I have just lost.

Oh GK!

My heart breaks for you, losing my pupper was one of the safest things I've ever experienced, so I feel your pain.

In time, you will think less about the loss and more about what joy they brought to your life.

I truly believe they're always with us.

Sending you much love and huge huggles

It's an extremely sad time saying goodbye to any beloved pet. Dogs are like having a human soulmate. I've lost many a pet. I have both my last two dogs ashes on a shelf in my bedroom. They are going in my coffin as they are when I die. I truly feel your heartache right now x

Ghengis, I’m so sorry to hear this and sending you massive hugs. No, you can’t explain what is happening to them but you being there talking to him and holding him was the right thing to do, some people can’t be there when this happens and the dog is then left searching for it’s owner, which is the only person they truly love and trust.xxx

There and to the left a bit

Oh mate so sorry to hear it - my thoughts are with you.

It's never easy losing a pet, they're members of the family just as much as anyone else that is part of it, and we feel their loss just as acutely - we've cared for them and nurtured them just the same as we would our kids, and there is no shame in shedding a tear for them.

All you can do is try and celebrate the wonderful life and memories he gave you and know that you have done the kindest, yet hardest thing.

You need to talk, you know where I am.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’m so sorry for your sad loss.

I had to say goodbye to my pooch last year after nine years of happiness; I still miss her to this day and even though I recently bought a new little wagging tail, it serves in no way to replace the loss

We had 2 dogs, both 14. We had to have both of them put to sleep within 4 months of each other. One had a seizure, and the other ones 'alzheimer's' was getting distressing for her.

It's terrible when you have to have to make this decision, but it's something you have to do at some point as a pet owner.

Just think of all the good times, and enjoy the memories.

Some very beautiful words on this thread. Thankyou everyone.. I've settled down a little now. Reading all this warms the heart, you're not the heartless bunch of cunts everyone thinks you all are. Quite the opposite.

"A lot of us are feeling your pain , I'm crying reading these replys , I lost my best mate basil xmas day 4 years ago , woke up and before we opened he's gifts under the tree let him out in the garden , heard a car screech and someone knocked on the door he had been run over , he was dead I had to get a spade and scrape him off the road . Spent xmas day holding him crying wishing I had made sure the gate was closed , will never get over it xmas has been cancelled ever since , he was there for me in all my bad times wagging he's tale hugging me when I was down , I gave him love , lots of walks good food , taught him how to play football , he was my shadow , I really hope you feel better soon , I'm sure he had a brilliant life with you , lots of dogs sadly don't get that love "

My heart goes out to you and to all those on the thread who have lost a pet. We had to have ours put to sleep almost two years ago and it still hurts now. Hardest thing was explaining to our little boy where our dog had gone, in the end we said he gone to play among the stars and if he ever missed him just to look at the sky at night and if a star is shining that was him. Even two years on our little boy, if he’s out at night and sees a very bright star he always comments that’s Jack our dog up there. Dogs leave a massive hole in our life’s and our hearts when they go but the love and companionship they give is amazing x

"I've just come back from the vets after watching my dog due in my arms.

Dogs have a special heaven called rainbow heaven, it’s a wonderful place for a wonderful dogs, I have 2 rainbow heaven dogs who are waiting there till I pass to be reunited again x

Xxxx

I’m tearing up just reading all of these, dogs only try to make us happy or safe, they give us friendship and love.

When our best friends passes, it makes our heart ache, leaving a forever void...

Our souls are touched by our pets, whilst I grew up in the country, and have known dogs all my life, losing them can devestate anyone..

Sometimes U.K

Feel for your loss GK, remember all the happy times although your heart will still ache.

Your beloved dog is running free over rainbow bridge, I hope you find comfort in his memory.

“There’s a special place our dear pets go

When their time on earth is through

The rainbow bridge, not far away

Makes all our pets brand new

Their health restored, they wait for us

Just this side of heaven

Then when it’s time, we’ll reunite

And cross the bridge together

As a dog lover and someone who has had several dogs throughout his life, i know how devastating it is when you lose a loved pet or indeed anyone or anything that means the world to you. It is an old cliche but time really does help and in the future you will only remember the happy times you spent together x

Thankyou everyone.. some very kind messages, open and in private (despite the request lol).

What helped most is hearing about others who were a bit torn up inside after having to make the decision I made. He may have recovered, but I had to take into account fading eyesight, hearing loss and old age into account and had what felt like very little time, all whilst staring into his fear filled eyes, panting and tense.

Dogs do deserve as much care and attention that we give any human. They go mad on their own, so please if you have a pet of your own. Give them an extra hug or bit of praise tonight on my behalf.

They aren't with us as much time as they deserve to be and it passes exceedingly quickly.

Just remember he/she, have been waiting at home all day to see you get home. They don't ask for much, just a bit of food and a bit of affection and a chance to smell the neighborhood. No other friend in your life will be as cheap or loyal. Or give more than they take.

Love from me.

We had to say goodbye to our dog a few years back now. We found out he had bone cancer and the lump that was on his hip was a tumur. He was clearly in pain as he couldnt lay down...the look on his face when we said our final goodbye was almost like he knew what was happening and was a look of "thank you" so sad. So sorry for your loss O.P.
