This is a question I've always fought with and still do at times.

Stems from a mother who was constantly telling me to try harder or I'll never amount to anything, nothing was ever good enough even if in truth it absolutely was.

I'm finally starting to believe that I am.

I had the same with my Dad

(I assume) he did it in good faith and in an attempt to push me to strive for excellence

Just one example was coming home from school all chuffed with myself, having got 90%+ in an exam

His reaction : "you know what they call that in my job? Scrap! - unless you get it 100% right, it goes in the bin, it's useless"

I was well into my 20's before I confronted him over it. I can't even remember what I'd done, but he had started to knock it

I didn't make a big fuss, I just said "fuckin 'ell Dad, whatever I do, it's never good enough is it? If I won the lottery, you'd be on my back for not doing it on a rollover week"

I saw him physically recoil

He had no idea - or he never thought I'd challenge him

He has been as right as rain ever since

He's an old man now, he's softened, he's recently told me that he's proud of me and the way I've turned out

I didn't need that, but it helped and I'll take it

Yep, exactly how I had it.

Then when I got with my ex I tried to better myself, started working in a school and got a few qualifications, nothing major but NVQs.... his reaction to the work I was putting in and when I passed was probably worse than my mums. He didn't dismiss my efforts but picked holes in other ways, I remember him saying "you've put all that fucking effort in for an NVQ, you know what those pieces of shit stand for don't ya? Nearly very qualified... ain't worth the paper it's written on so if you wanna waste your fucking time, do it on something worthwhile"

I never challenged the mother. Saw no point and thought it really wouldn't achieve much apart from upsetting her if she actually listened to what I was saying of course. I have bugger all to do with her now and I don't see the point in creating agro over something I can't change that won't have any effect on the future either

Yes. Since my mid - late 20’s my feelings self worth have been on a steady upward trend with a couple of dips due to guilt about things I’d done. However on the whole I am content with who I am and don’t feel the need to be anything more than myself. There are things I can change but I’ll get round to that when I’m ready.

This thread led to me having a "moment" last night. It's not a bad thing by any stretch, yes I was upset but that's part of the self discovery route.

26 years. That's over half my life of being told I wasn't.

I realised unlearning something you were taught for 26 fucking years of your life is gonna take more work than I thought.

You can know something but not necessarily believe in it, and I think that's where I am now.

I know the mother and the ex were wrong, but I don't quite believe fully in myself just yet

I’m newish here. From your profile, pics and veris from those who know you, you are clearly a great person. You are really attractive and people speak very well of you.

I understand the self-doubt, but ultimately the only person you have to be enough for is yourself. If you aren’t enough, or are too much for someone else, then they don’t deserve you.
