How good is it for weighloss/fat loss?

Having a debate with my friend and more joined in. It's split. Some say yes some say no.

What say you?

Great for toning up all parts of the body. Not sure about the weight loss though.

It must be good. The first thing they do on these shows about huge fat people is throw them in a pool and tell them to swim. I believe it’s one of the forms of exercise you can do with very little stress on the body.

We swim regularly and don't think it's good for weight loss unless you're very committed because it increases your appetite. It does help maintain weight and is great for flexibility and all over tone however.

I do think that if you swam an hour a day and restricted calorie intake or kept it the same you would lose weight though.

There are many regulars at the pool we go to whose weight appears to remain static. That might be though because a lot of them think swimming 10 metres and then standing in the pool chatting counts as a work out .

Swimming great for weight loss & overall toning.

But it depends what you do... slow & steady breaststroke won’t help to lose weight

over there by that tree

For me definitely has I’ve dropped just shy of 2 stone since January, I try and average 10km a week.

But diet (I’ve not changed what I eat, just less of it) is key you need a calorie deficit to loose weight vs activity.

Equally though as well as the weight loss I’ve naturally toned without actually doing anything other than swimming.

I have to disagree, any activity versus no activity will help combined with eating less. I think what puts many people off exercise is the idea that you need to go hell for leather. It's better to exercise gently than not at all

It can be a brilliant exercise if done correctly because it's a complete body workout. However, weight loss is really about 80% diet and 20% exercise. Rather than trying to follow some fad diet, the only proven method for losing weight is simply to consume less calories than you use so that you're at a deficit

The first question is: Do you want to lose weight or specifically fat?

Cardio exercise is not good for fat loss. Cardio is good for having a healthy heart and to improve stamina. If you want to reduce body fat, do that through changing what you eat.

The reason is cardio burns fat as well as muscle. Building muscle is good for fat reduction because the bigger your muscles are, the more calories they consume, including at rest. Burn off the muscle with lots of cardio and you will reduce your body's ability and inclination to burn body fat.

All cardio (as far as I'm aware) will help reduce weight since you'll either burn muscle or fat (or just the food you have eaten which is a bit pointless) and muscle weighs more than fat.

My advice is rather than looking at weight loss, find a more meaningful measure. You can get scales that analyse your muscle/fat ratio and various things so pick some measurements from that. Alternatively one I love is simply belt notches. My weight is going up because of muscle growth but I am doing up my belt tighter and fitting slimmer clothes.

Whatever you do, don't use BMI because that's total shit.

You’re using energy, thus burning calories, therefore by my calculations you will ultimately loose weight.

Not if you chase it with a double bacon cheeseburger and 4 pints

Any exercise combined with healthy eating will result in weight loss. Swimming is particularly good as it is a total body exercise.

It is as good as any other form of excersise if part of a decent weight loss program. If you stop by McDonalds on the way home each time it is not going to do a lot of good.

Well it's not a thing for your health and probably not going to make you fatter. And as you get a bit more older and worn I find the low impact factor helps reduce wear and tear. So I find it is playing a bigger part in my activies down the gym as I get older. After all im hopeful of getting many more years out of this body using orginal parts.

Any exercise will help weight loss as long as the eating is good.

Best exercise you can do. I do triathlon , I feel swimming gives an over all feeling of health and well being. When I really hammer the pool sessions before a race my body always tones up.

Don’t delay, get you butt in the pool!!

Remember, no heavy petting in the deep end lol
