Buying second-hand = no pride, WTF???!!!

No joke, this came from a former camping acquaintance whom I have ex-communicated due to his unreasonable _iews on camping related matters.
He said something in the line that just because peeps do not have a lot of spare cash, does not mean they would be happy to buy someone's second hand cast offs as they do have some pride!
WTF???!!! What a complete to$$er! 
His frigging car was second or "n" hand!!!
The admin closed the thread and I could not add my 2p's worth.
I have made the right decision to ex-communicate him for certain! 
The issue I have with second-hand goods is that I do not wish to bring bad karma into my house - I would like to know where they have been, if you know what I mean.
I would only take my parents' hand-me-downs as I know they have been in a relatively happy house for as long as I can remember.
What are your _iews of buying second-hand goods?  |

Depends what the goods are, all my clothes come from charity shops, love going to auction rooms and second hand shops, i get a right kick out of bargain hunting. Im looking to get an ipod and going to the shop where people take their stuff to sell when an uptodate model comes out.
Stuff i wouldnt buy secondhand are things like computers or washing machines as i like to know how long they are going to last.
So in conclusion not only am i thick tonight according to some it seems according to some i have no pride either  |

The monalisa would sell for millions and that's really old and second hand :P and to me... not that great :P |

I've got a mixture of new and secondhand diving kit (and my life could depend on it!) as long as it is in good condition and fully serviced I see no problem with it. Afraid all this karma and fungshui (sp) stuff is a load of bunkum as far as I'm concerned.
p.s. if I don't return from diving on wednesday I'll revise my opinion

No issue at all, I wear a second hand coat, I bought for £20, that would be thick end of a grand new. Same with a suit I bought for £50.
Also bought a futon, wrought iron base, looks awesome, £30 off ebay, about £500 new. |

I last met him face to face as my local camp site where he was staying, and all he moaned about was the state of his grass pitch being destroyed by rabbits, and that they should be shot/gassed/whatever!
I drank my can of Coke as quickly as I could so that I leave!
When he complained about the dawn chorus etc. being too loud etc., I thought enough was enough, and I wanted nothing to do with him.
If Victor Meldrew goes camping, he would like him!!! |

Up until a couple of years, I wouldn't have walked into a charity shop/second hand goods shop or a car boot sale....then I one day I lost my job.
In the space of the first week of being unemployed, I had walked into those shops and that car boot sale, and I have to say, hand on heart that I have never looked back. Food and underwear though, I do buy from the high street, but anything else, if I can get second hand then I will. |

I have absolutely no problem with buying secondhand goods.
I have bought secondhand clothes and indeed bought some great vintage gowns in New York in thrift shops for $40 or so.
I also love secondhand furniture, especially wooden cabinets, mirrors, light fittings. I have a secondhand diamond ring, who knowa whose hand that's been on before and I don't care either.
I am not superstitious and don't believe in karma. I would much rather buy a good quality secondhand table than a new Argos MDF one |

I dunno I know a chap at work who's so mean, he wore his mothers clothes after she died, also he lived near a fish and chip shop and raids the bin outside midnight on a Friday and Saturday night. You've never seen anybody like it a serve yourself buffet, Edmund Hillary would struggle to climb the mountain on his plate.
Fit as butchers dog he was, never off sick, he's probably immune to every disease known to man. |

I am in the process of putting some jewellery that I no longer wear up for sale to raise money for a camping trailer.

Over the years I've spent loads on suits for work, only to get them dirty, greasy or rip them.
Then I discovered Ebay and found that there are loads of blokes who buy a suit for a wedding, wear it once, may be twice if there is a christening soon after, lol, then find it doesn't fit them anymore.
I've bought plenty since for about £15-£20 mostly Marks and Sparks Italian collection, and I'll continue to do so |

I don't know about the underwear, but I went in on overtime and he came in wearing woman slacks, blouse and cardigan.
The reason he was there, coffee is free out of the machine, he walked two miles on his day off for a free cup Nescafe. |

If it wasn't for second hand, a lot of stuff I wouldn't own. It's not about pride to me, its if i can afford to pay full price for something. Example might be the latest game. £40 when it comes out, wait a few months can drop to £25, wait a year and get it 2nd hand, £5-10.
If the government stopped cutting all the jobs, maybe I could get one which lasts more than a week and is more than min wage for once, then i can buy stuff more often, even then I'd still prob go 2nd hand. |

I buy second hand all the time; my clothes come from charity shops even shoes, bought a brand new never worn still with the price tag on pair of slip ons for a fiver instead of £40, my washing machine is second hand, when it needs repairing, I weigh up the cost vs another machine and sometimes it works out cheaper to buy another one. All the ones I have had have lasted almost as long as the brand new ones I have bought in the past. I cannot afford brand new so rarely pay full price unless its in a sale.
My 1997 Proton cost my son £30; the last 2 yrs MOT have cost nothing and not even had an advisory, this year it cost me £30 for repairs
My best bargain is a gorgeous evening gown from a car boot for 20p oh yes and a microwave for £6 that works fine.
And I wash anything I buy from charity shops and the car boot before I wear it so personally I don't see the problem at all with second hand.
Even my daughter buys from car boots, she gets some right bargains as she checks the stuff before she buys it and its cheaper as she buys a lot of clothes for her little step daughter. Some stalls have brand new and cheaper than the shops.
And my gas cooker was second hand when I got given it and 15 yrs later its still going strong; the on/off button on one of the rings may not work properly but it still works and makes a nice roast |

my flat is a mix of old and new and it works kinda well
love my 50's style sideboard which was out of age concern and bought for the pricely sum of £130
that and chest of drawers i have in the bedroom that belonged to my great grandma are the main reasons i put off moving
remembering the battle i had to get them both in, i really don't relish the thought of gettin them out |

i dont see how buying 2nd hand brings bad karma.
karma is help for bad actions not bad items.
people have some strange ideas about what ancient eastern traditions are used for nowadays.
we buy mst things 2nd hand.
Em loves 2nd hand shops, and i almost live on facebook sales sites, so yeah, absolutely no pride here either, ffs |

If any of the anti-second hand peeps have a Ferrari 250 GTO spare I'll take it as its unlikely you would have bought it new so I can do you a favour and take it off your hands.
I totally agree with most of the posters as there are some real bargains to be had out there, often quality of older items can be far higher; especially in furniture with the use of dove-tailed joints etc. I must be competing for the suits in a certain online auction house. My _iew is I only wear them to work so doesn't matter if they're new or not. For £50 I got a second hand Canali suit; can only have been worn a handful of times, had it dry cleaned and bang, looks a £1k worth |

sitting on a sofa i got on ebay next to a nest of table i got on there too and have just bid on a dining table and chairs
i get lots of my clothes on there too i just love a good bargain
i don't see the point of buying brand new when i can get some fabulous items second hand and save a shed load of money to boot meens i get to have more nice things in the long run |

my wife ,loves second hand shops ,i think they are yuk ,and even standing outside one i start to itch, and there is no way i will go into one ,lucky she never buys close ,but has bought a few handbags which she colects with vigor new or old ,needless to say they find themselfs confind to the darkest corner of the attic ewwwwwww |

Hmmmm makes ya wonder, would these people who regard using second hand goods as socially demeaning or those people who hold an irrational fear of inheriting bad karma refuse a blood transfusion or kidney transplant if they needed one….!. Eh!…….

I would never buy a new car.. no matter how much money I had.. (okay unless I won the lottery)
basically because cars lose so much in the first year.
however, I have brought loads of things 2nd hand.. Books to be fair are my biggest purchase that are often not new, dvds and games..
I am currently trawling the freecycle places as I need a new sofa and dont want to waste money that could go on things for my kids on a new sofa.. when there are plenty of things out there.
one thing I wont buy 2nd hand.. A mirror...

I have 12 property's.Never had a new car even though I bought my Son 3 in 5 years so I am far from tight.I have always gone for second hand in almost everything.Karma is another thing that keeps weak mends even weaker.Ask the starving million's around the world about Karma.Love you all.Don |

I love a good bargain why buy new when you can buy second hand. Most of my childrens clothes do the circuit when they are out grown then they get passed on. And we do clothes swap and toy swap at school. |

I rarely buy new as there is so much good second hand stuff around and I'm broke. It is a throw away society and what is rubbish to some is a godsend to others. Recycling as I like to call it is the only way for me |

We regularly buy second hand stuff, cars, bikes, parts for said cars and bikes, my phone was second hand technically (Brand new in box - unwanted upgrade - cheap as hell) there are lots of things i wouldn't buy second hand, but i love antiques and they are hard to come by new ( before anyone starts making out like i am stupid that was a joke)
but i wouldnt say because i buy things second hand i have no pride.. infact im usually pretty chuffed with myself for grabbing a bargain and recycling... |

Im sat here in my best bargain to date, my £180 jagear dress that cost me £5.99 and the thing is i joke because it is a jagear, but its just the style and colour of something i would of bought brand new not for £180 though. But i live and die in it, i will be very sad the day i shrink right out of it |

I am slowly getting over my phobia of charity/second hand shops. I buy books, games etc... But still can't bring myself to buy clothes.
Most of my clothes as a kid used to come from jumble sales etc... Because mum couldn't afford new stuff and the stick I used to get off other kids who recognised their old clothes has stuck with me, yep I was that kid!
Cue the Violins lol!!
I give all my old clothes to charity now though and it's good to hear so many people get good use out of second hand gear. |

I love dress agencies, designer duds, dry cleaned and sold on at a fraction of the original price. I've had some great bags from there too - recently retired a Russell and bromley bag I paid £50 for and used.regularly for ten years - they were around £300 new when I got it.  |

I agree with most of what you have typed, Pearl, except this bit! Thing is, you take something into your home and your home is a happy one, no problem!
We bought a fantastic sideboard from a second hand shop and it cost £80. When it was delivered it took three to carry it and even then it was a struggle. It looks perfect in out "Bamboo room". and we have been told it would have been nearly £2000 new!
I look in all the second hand shops everytime I go to town.. One well chuffed little bunny here!

The only thing I buy second hand is cds from Amazon. That said, when I bought my house, the vendor had been toying with the idea of renting it out so had put in a new fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave, new beds with the plastic still on, leather sofas, dining table and chairs for the breakfast room and a beautiful credenza with a matching walnut folding dining table. He offered the whole lot for £1,000...bargin I thought.
My daughter spends a lot of time in charity shops as he likes vintage clothes and old fabrics which she unpicks and makes into her designer bows which she flogs for £10 each down Greenwich market.

I love Antiques and have been going to sales for years and shops and auctions even on line now. As a young child with my dad i feel i know a bit about antiques now .. I love the country Big house auctions just no telling what i will come home with ... my old house here thay look just right .. over the years i am filling it up with things making it feel like a home . New things would not look right . |

I love grabbing second-hand bargains. My best to date was a gorgeous 'as new' Prada bag, £6.99 from a charity shop. When I was a bit strapped for cash a while later and needed some cash for a birthday present, I sold it on Ebay for £97. I've never been one to let 'pride' get in the way of a ninety quid profit! |

don't we all buy second hand stuff ???????.you buy a house chances are its had a previous owner so its second hand same goes for cars .we live in very hard times and buying second hand stuff is absolutely fine. |

if none of us bought second hand stuff, there would be an awful lot of charities struggling to survive,
there would be no antique shops. no car boot sales which people who sell on rely on them for their income, to feed their families and pay their way in life.
all the rubbish tips would be fookin mahoosive with all the re usable stuff that folk had thrown away.

Most of my 'posh frocks' for socials and all of my hand-bags come from charity shops. Mind St. Andy's does have a lot of good stuff 'recycled' by the resident student population. |

My grandson is one of the best dressed babies around here, Gap, next, Baby Sherman, Ralf Lauren, Baby Rocha, JoJo Maman Bebe etc..... all from the Racecourse car boot sale or charity shops and ALL brand new.
The most expensive thing we bought was a brand new Baby Sherman coat...... cost me £2.00.
She also got all the balls for his ball pit from the local Sue Ryder shop...... £5 for 400! Well impressed. |

I believe in bargains, can be new goods or otherwise'.
Up until a couple of years, I wouldn't have walked into a charity shop/second hand goods shop or a car boot sale....then I one day I lost my job.
In the space of the first week of being unemployed, I had walked into those shops and that car boot sale, and I have to say, hand on heart that I have never looked back. Food and underwear though, I do buy from the high street, but anything else, if I can get second hand then I will."

Some things sold as new in shops have been sold and returned. So they are second hand.
I have no issue with buying not new things. To me they arent second hand - just re discovered. |

I have pride. Pride in my ability to pick out great second hand bargains.
As someone mentioned above, it it more like snobbery than pride to look down on recycling, hand-me-downs, and second hand good. |

i volunteer in a charity shop, and you'd be surprised at the number of clothes that are donated still with the tags on!!!
Loads of new and even designer clothes come in all the time.
Its a haven for a bargain, ive gotten loads of stuff for the house at a fraction of the price. |
