Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

"Do I have to say the name says it all "

I didn't do those until I was an adult.

As child it was Bunty, Jackie, Smash Hits and then I found Cosmo and Spare Rib as my grown up comics when I was about 14/15.

Just 17, Smash Hits and Bliss as a kid, onto NME, Private Eye and New Scientist in my teens. Plus loads of Marvel, DC and a plethora of indie comics.

I only ever had Whizzer and Chips when the family went on holiday and I had comics for the train.

The only problem having a comic on order is when you eventually get around to canceling it with your local newsagent and your in your mid 30's.

Ongoing exercise to get my collection indexed. Titles starting A to P inclusive amount to 12,929 issues. Letters Q to Z still to do, plus a large number of graphic novels, magazines and other associated items. Probably about 25,000 items by the time I'm done.

Btw, this Saturday, May 4th, is this year's free comic book day. Every year most of the comics publishers produce a bunch of special promotional issues that are given away free in comic book stores. There'll be stuff for all ages, from simple picture stories for littlies, through the super hero books, to serious sociopolitical commentary for those pretending to be more adult.

So whether you have an intellectual curiosity about the sequential illustration artform, or just fond memories of the four colour pages from childhood, why not look up your local participating comics store and get down there in the morning. Generally no purchase required, and give aways from half a dozen up to twenty comics per person.

Google FCBD comics store 2019 to find your nearest shop.

Twinkle, fast forward, smash hits!, mizz, just 17 and top of the pops.

Shame they are ridiculously over priced these days and a dying trend anyway (the teen mags at least, we got one for my step daughter recently for something to read, she’s 11 and didn’t read it at all, didn’t even take the fake nails for goodness sake!)
