Wow, what a dark song!

I was just listening to Barry Manillo ( don't judge! ) Coppa Cobaba, and I was suddenly such by what a dark song that is.

Perfect pop fluff, but the lyrics....

They fall in love, there's a fight, he dies, she drinks herself to death over 40 years. Bleak!

What other pop songs that makes everyone dance with joy have a similar bleak, theme?

If Beckett wrote pop songs?

Build me up buttercup is pretty dark. It's about an abusive relationship.

Every Breath You Take by The Police is about a stalker.

You're Gorgeous sounds like an abusive relationship.

On a lighter note, The Macarana is about a threesome a young lady has whilst her fella is away with the army.

I am often darkly amused by people playing 'in the arms of an angel' at funerals without realising it's lyrics refer to Class A drug abuse

Drinking over 40 years until death is quite normal round here.

The pins colada song is a bit ‘what the fuck’ too, I mean they were both trying to cheat on each other and were like ‘oh that’s totally fine!’

I guess another one is "Perfect Day" by Lou Reed.

You think it's about a perfect day, but it's really about being a hopeless retched junky and your life fleeting in a haze of worthless moments.

Oops!

Somewhere In The Ether…

Hey Joe - famously covered by Jimi Hendrix; He gets his gun and shoots his girlfriend

Classic 80s song 'Feels like heaven' by Fiction Factory.

It gets played at weddings but it is about the feeling of freedom after a divorce.

Stephen Jones (Babybird) is in my opinion one of the most underrated musical genius this country has produced. If you like melancholy thought provoking music, look no further. "You're gorgeous" just pays the bills.

....."He drowned his stepson in the duckpond

Let the wifebeater out to make a pop song

He put razor blades, in the ice cream

Shot a paedophile in a wet dream"...

Depeche Mode....almost all of their post Vince Clarke stuff, but Blasphemous Rumours is pretty up there for bleakness.

Or maybe Johnny Cash, he had a fair few dark moments- Cocaine Blues (shot his woman, got arrested) Folsom Prison blues (banged up, looking at the free people), 25 minutes to go (countdown to getting hung), long black veil (man shags best mates wife, mistaken for criminal, dies to keep the affair secret, she mourns him the rest of her life).
