Especially when you drive as some of them are using the whole lane, the same goes when they are 2 they are beside eachother and dont move, is it allowed, what do you do, do you beep at them? Lol.

Some male cyclists have become militant. Fair enough give them room. But the tendency of some to want the same space as a car or cycle in pairs is annoying. Nobody wants a middle aged man in lycra hollering after you as you drive past in a lonely country lane.

Yeah, totally fine, I'm afraid.

Taking the lane is recommended by government-approved cycle training scheme Bikeability, because cyclists are safest where they can see the road and be seen.

Section 163 of the Highway Code states road users should: "Give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car."

Duncan Pickering, cycling manager at the Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM), says:

"A bicycle is a vehicle on the road and a person riding it has the right to act like any other person on the road.We all hear of cases where someone gets too close to the left and there are very unfortunate consequences if a lorry driver doesn't see them.'Some motorists think it is a divine right to be moving at whatever speed they want and a cyclist is holding them up. I'm afraid it is tough if a cyclist holds them up. In most urban areas traffic moves slowly so a cyclist doesn't hold up traffic."

I’m fine with giving cyclists a wide berth when overtaking them, I always make sure all my car wheels are across the white lines when I pass them.

Unfortunately when they’re taking up the full lane that means I’m less than a metre from the nearest one which is still a bit close for their safety.

I dont mind them riding side by side its good for thier safety.

Im a bit jealous that us on motorbikes cant do the same as its considered dangerous driving/dangerous over taking.

But i would like at a minimum bar end mirrors to be a legal requirement for cyclists.

Hardly any do any shoulder checks and those that do tend to wobble about and change lane position from 1 to 2 or even 3.

When they undertake while filtering on the left to traffic lights very few even think to glance right to check if they've just nipped up the blind side of a vehicle about to turn left.

Mirrors would help here but a cbt equivalent would be better.

Many cyclists seem to have the bizarre view that thier safety is other peoples problem

Usually when they take the lane it's for their own safety. If you wouldn't overtake a car in similar circumstances, don't overtake a bike. Wait until it's safe for both of you.

Cyclists are vulnerable and it shouldn't be forgotten but I do wish they'd use signals more to indicate changing direction. I had one thump on the roof of my van but he hadn't indicated that he wanted to cross lanes.

However, the driver who harassed me as I held back at traffic lights for the sake of an ambulance truly deserves to be booted off the road.

The greatest sporting event in the world is the Tour de France.

British riders have dominated this for most of the last decade with numerous wins and podium places.

At least have the decency to respect them on the road. Cars etc can be intimidating when they get too close. In Ireland the passing distance is 1.5m or more. This law is progressive and saves lives.

However I don’t agree with two abreast (unless in larger groups and preferably on country roads or during off peak times)

Im not having a go at cyclists and im not getting into the Vehicle Excise Duty argument. However, I do think cyclists should have to have some sort of cycling proficiency test to get some sort of riding licence. All bikes should have some sort of registration and lastly all riders have some sort of road insurance. I'm not saying these need to be the same as car/van/truck drivers because they obviously arent the same but I am saying they do need some form of these things.

Live and let live, give them space, slow down and go around, I would rather do that than have any bad shit on my conscience because of my inappropriate driving. It may be a middle aged man, me, or my father who is 82, or my boy who is 14, we do not want to harm anyone when out on a cycle ride or indeed be harmed.

I suggest the peeps who are all mr aggressive and complaining like bitches get on there bikes and try going for a cycle. See how it feels to have a transit mirror hit your arm at 60, see how it feels when a car goes past with inches to spare, then it may alter your perception of things. Is your journey time really that more important than a persons life?

Nope, cycle paths in Britain aren't built for the supposed purpose.

I find it frustrating when there are long strings of them out on roads where it is difficult to overtake. If they would pair up and allow a cars length between them, it would be much more sensible than having drivers following for miles, then getting so fed up,that they take risks in order to get past them.

It can be quite a nuisance.

I always try to give them plenty of clearance in case they have a wobbly bit of road x

There was a thread, or had been a number of threads, on this and on another of sweeping generalisations. Sadly something that comes out a lot in many of these threads.

There are bad cyclists, there are bad car drivers, there are bad commercial vehicle drivers. Equally there are good versions of each.

As someone else had mentioned, roads are a shared resource for all and respect to other road users should come from all. Cyclists and drivers alike.

I am sometimes a pedestrian, sometimes a cyclist, sometimes a driver and experience the frustrations from other people as all 3.

I get annoyed walking along a narrow bridle way being dinged by a cyclist as they want to pass yet I have no where to go but the hedge. How would they like being beeped by a car. Equally I have been beeped and abused as a cyclist.

Know the laws, abide by the laws or at least if you break them live with the consequences, have some patience, mutual respect, stop thinking your progress is the most important thing in life and just enjoy the journey

And the bell, as with the horn, is there to let other road users know you are there ... not to constantly badger other user to get the hell out your way ... in every way ... if you want to pass someone it is YOUR responsibility to ensure you do so safely ... headphones... bad road position etc is an excuse for ire ... no to endanger life or safety

It's not bikes, motorbikes or cars that are the problem...it's the people using them. There's fuckers using them all and few are as innocent as they make themselves out to be.... Including myself at times (I used to ride a bike on the roads till one day I realised it was safer not to. I wasn't going to change the volume of traffic, nor reduce the size of the vehicles using them either).

I still use my bike but in more appropriate places away from the roads and traffic that only get worse.

Some one made a long quote and in it said something important... 'cant be seen'... That sums up most cyclists, most don't wear suitable clothing, nor suitable protective gear. As said by someone they expect their safety to be adhered by others not themselves.

Sometimes one has to move to be safe.

If its safest for a motorbike or bicycle to take the whole road, then why do they filter through traffic? Why do they ignore the advice themselves when it suits them, and follow it when it suits them?

Thats the main problem with them. They are inconsistent, they quote rules to suit themselves, they follow rules in a haphazard way, they are unpredictable, they make the road dangerous for you as you have to give them more attention than other road users.

The last of my sympathy for cyclists went Boxing Day after I was passed by one in dark clothes with no lights on the wrong side of the road going onto a roundabout whilst I was driving home after a night shift.

There's just way to many of them that do whatever they want, whenever they want, wherever they want.

They do, and if they are caught they get penalty points, and keep doing it they get banned from driving. What happens a cyclist?

But i mean if thats your excuse for them being idiots, cause they want to aim to be as good as the worst people in a car, sure, go for it. Just admit it and own it, and stop pretending like they are following some higher up rules and are good people, when they are not.

Hard to argue against that. Previous posts have suggested that cyclists should have to get a license of competence, have insurance, road worthy certificate and pay some form of VED too, but they all seemed to think that was unfair for them for whatever reason which we never found out. I'm guessing most wouldn't cycle on the roads then.

Level playing field would stop a lot of arguments.

That's the type of argument that gives cyclists credibility. If you wish to be taken seriously then give good serious counter arguments.

It's the same for the motorist. Act the tit then be seen as a tit and be treated as one.

I was told by a cycle proficiency trainer that they are allowed to be four ft or 1.2 m from kerb . They can ride side by side too . If there’s a group they can ride all together and take the whole side of a road .

I agree with all that. Road users all allowed to do a lot of things, sometimes is best not to assume your rights for many reasons. Its not always best to stick to the allowed speed limit, sometimes it's best to give the other person the right of way even if it's your right, I could cite many more examples, the point I think a lot have been saying in this post as almost any previous one, is that cyclists think they own the road because they are allowed to do this or that and can get get away with things too. Being arrogant about the road safety issues is at the feet of motorists won't win the hearts of motorists either.

If there is a line of cars at a red traffic light, and a car at the end of the line went onto the wrong side of the road, drove down and ducked into a yellow box, then drove out again and ducked infront of the first person the line.

Not one single person in a car would think "oh cyclists do that too so its okay", they would be lucky if they were not dragged out of their car and beaten, or caught by a cop and given points, or caught by a camera on the yellow box and given points.

But for some reason when a cyclist breaks the rules, other cyclists often say "well I seen a car break a rule once".

personally I have no objection to licensing etc, we are again blaming the victim, the penalties for cyclists tend to be injury or death, not points on your licence. But licensing would not level the playing field 2 tons of metal vs person on bike is never an equal contest.

Try remembering that if that person riding a bicycle dies or is injured as a result of your vehicle hitting them, you will do jail time. And their family will miss them, as will yours. It doesn't matter who's right or wrong. That man on a bicycle who you bark at may turn out to be a 14 year old boy. If he dies when his face hits the curb. I bet his dad will want a word with you when you get released from prison.

"Instead of cyclist or motorist or biker, try human or person or people. "

So we're back to the old ...don't like labels topic again? How does one identify different behavioural patterns being discussed? It's not the bike, car or motorcycle but as I said much earlier it's the person using them, there is however a pattern of behaviour by the user's that's being discussed, Hense using human, person or people wouldn't help much I feel. However I could easily be wrong.

"If there is a line of cars at a red traffic light, and a car at the end of the line went onto the wrong side of the road, drove down and ducked into a yellow box, then drove out again and ducked infront of the first person the line.

No . They dont .

They have in this thread lol... Reread it again please."

Where's the rule that cyclists & bikers can't cut thru traffic?

Never,i road for years on my bike

Always courtious to the drivers

Would mount the curb to avoid holding up a que behind, would hug the roadside so not to be in the way bumb over the grids and pot holes, there really is no reason for one to be in the way. So when i see a cunt in middle of the road

And i bark the fucker to the curb

There isn't, but it's a practice which has its dangers and that's one of the main points in this (take responsibility for one's own dangerous road behaviour and try not to blame the motorist for cyclists acting with disregard.

Where they are legally entitled to take the middle of the lane position. You as a driver are not entitled to intimidate them.

Any person on the road can and has given trouble at some point deliberately or unknowingly. Some by their actions some by not paying attention, it's part of road life.

It's the behaviour, agressive or passive agression and pretending it's others that are responsible that lead to the issues debated.

Iv been cycling a lot of years and igree all road users make the odd error from time to time.

I'll admit when I was a lot younger I made some stupid moves on the roads fortunately I got to live to tell the tale and nothing happened to the other road users

Not sure saying hundreds of years is quite accurate the 'safety bicycle' that is the basic form of modern bikes ie: 2 wheels the same size and driven by a chain was actually invented in 1885. So its actually 134 years old rather than hundreds. In fact 1886 is regarded as the birth year of the modern car when German inventor Karl Benz first patented his Benz Patent-Motorwagen. So cars and bicycles have been around for virtually the same time.

Fully agree, not illegal but you take your own chances without endangering others. However in previous posts it seems some cannot tell the difference between carving through & mostly around traffic at a pace of ones own choosing and maybe being close to cars & being close passed in flowing traffic at a speed & proximity of the drivers choosing, if that seems the same thing then it explains a lot.

Driving 30k a year,cycle 5k a year,prefer to drive at night,cycle off road,gravel when ever possible,why?

Britain's roads are over crowded, people think their more important than everyone else, cars have got bigger, frustration at the overcrowding, road users can be so reluctant to give way,let each other out, merge, pull back over to the left, even when it would allow traffic to flow faster

Live n let live

I (mr) ride a bike and at other times, an estate car for work with the tools of my trade. When I’m driving cyclists can be annoying, and vice versa. Nothing to really get mad about either way.

But that time I was verbally abused by some horsey riding hunting people, when on my bike, for not having a bell to warn them was a bit much.

The joys of traffic stories endlessly abound.

Tbf filtering is a safety technique. Cyclists and bikers dont have crumple zones so waiting at the back of a queue can be very dangerous.

Quick example how many drivers when in a stationay queue turn your wheels towards the curb?

Entering rhe yellow box or running the red is just down right illegal and wrong thouhh

"If its safest for a motorbike or bicycle to take the whole road, then why do they filter through traffic? Why do they ignore the advice themselves when it suits them, and follow it when it suits them?

Thats the main problem with them. They are inconsistent, they quote rules to suit themselves, they follow rules in a haphazard way, they are unpredictable, they make the road dangerous for you as you have to give them more attention than other road users."

It's called defensive driving.

Often on narrower roads if theres a park car on the far side is is sensible to ride near the central white line om the right of your lane.

This forces any oncoming cars to wait and stop behind the parked car rather than trying to squeeze past. As fuck knows how good thier aim is.

Filtering is a safety feature as a rear end in traffic is essentially a death sentence and again your in control so it's your risk. You arent relying on some random car driver to not drift.
