I cycle (Ivy) but for triathlons not trips. Perhaps I'm missing a trick there!

I ride MTB and road, not for competition though just for fun.

Also commute everyday by bike, just waiting for a visit from the cops now after being threatened by a driver tonight

Fine thanks, just annoyed.

Driver deliberately drove too close to me - inches, not feet - then when i caught up at the lights and attempted to say "that was abit close mate" he went mental and threatened to assault me, to the point of climbing out of his vehicle and running 20-odd yards to stick his face in mine and threaten assault again.

Apparently i was not riding where he thought i should be - in the gutter. It was a wide, two-lane 40mph dual carriage way with plenty of room that i ride everyday without incident.

He deliberately (IMO) drove too close in order to threaten me for whatever reason.

Been reported, so just waiting for the police to contact me.

To be fair, the overwhelming number of motorists who cut up a cyclist don't do it out of malice.

A bike and rider is a small object, less than 3 degrees of vision and there is a school of thought that thinks the human eye developed to see a threat of 6 degrees or more - a car is such a size.

When people are not as aware as they should be (and we've all been there) a cyclist simply isn't seen which is why i wear a bright hi-viz jacket and reflectors etc.

There are a very small number of drivers who can't judge speed and distance, the ones who try to overtake and turn left right on top of you, to defend against that i ride further out into the road when approaching a left-hand junction to stop a vehicle attempting such a turn, then pull back in.

"got knocked off my bike twice in broad daylight by bloody inconsiderate motorists!,they ought to have to go for 6 monthly eye tests i reckon. "

I nearly had 3 accidents last week..... all caused by cyclists disobeying road rules.

1. Cycling straight in front of me as I was about to turn out of a road. He wore black and had no lights. It was 8pm and only by the grace of god did I see him.

2. Pushing my grandson over a pedestrian crossing, with the green man on full show, cyclists comes booting down the road and straight over the red light......... I managed to pull the buggy back just in time but he could have hurt my 7 month old grandson.

3. We were waitinThg at the lights on the way to work. They turn green and just as myself and the driver next to me were starting off........ a cyclist ignores their red light and comes scooting across the path of both of us as he's turning right. We both breaked and managed to avoid the c**t.

Perhaps, if cyclists observed the basic rules of the road...... ie, stop at red lights..... there wouldn't be so many bloody accidents.

Cyclists are the bain of my life on the way to work because last week wasn't a one off......... it generally happens every day.

All illegal moves that would get him a ticket if seen by a cop.

Personally i see far more vehicles jumping red lights every day than i do cyclists.

i still reckon reckon motorists should have eyes tested twice a year as the way they jump red lights suggests they either do it deliberatly thus breaking the law,or genuinely have defective sight which means they should have licence removed!.

The I should move up north....... because cyclists are a bloody nuisence on the country roads of the Cotswolds.

Trouble is, with no license plate, we can't report the idiots who cause their own accidents

Fine, providing all cyclists go for a twice yearly eye checks and have to pass a test and a theory before they are allowed to cycle on the roads.

I am hoping to be able to do more than just a few hundred metres without falling down/panting like a dog in the sun this year.

I shall start off with the indoor exercise bike first, before taking the bike out on the road when the weather is nicer and the days longer.

Some cyclists are their own worst enemies riding like described above, I work and drive around central London and sometimes I want to punch one of the feckers, and that's from me a keen cyclist!

Studies have shown that drivers subconsciously drive closer to cyclists who are wearing helmets as they think that they will be ok in a collision, also they subconsciously give female cyclists a wider berth, bizarre don't ya think

Do you have any canal towpaths/easy bridleways/off-roadcycle lanes where you live?

All can be much more forgiving on the new cyclist, the roads can be a bit scary for someone who can't quite get the speed up as yet.

Plus, the above are a lot more pleasant!

Strange that one isn't it?

I find wearing a hi-viz jacket and having good lights and reflectors to be the best way of being seen, and riding in a way that means you can control the road space around you to be the safest way to ride.

Ride like you were a car and it does seem that drivers treat you with more courtesy, ride in the gutter and look nervous and it does feel like people take advantage of you.

Also would advise everyone to do a course on road cycling - can really help with building confidence.

Would ideally like the driving test to include a module on cycling so that people who have never ridden on the roads can have some idea of how to behave around more vulnerable road users, but thats unlikely to happen

Article on the news right now stating that one in three drivers are behind the wheel whilst suffering from some form of uncorrected eye-sight impairment

Has to be said it is mainly about older drivers but still...
