That's the thing - it's completely subjective and matched by its opposite "kinky" for being so - what is vanilla to one person is completely different to the next.
For me I first came across the term when I was introduced to the BDSM/fetish world where it's used to describe those who have no interest in BDSM/fetish activities and so tends to be my understanding - although since joining here I've also come to understand it as any one that doesn't indulge in the swinging lifestyle.
So maybe it's actually a term to describe those in monogamous relationships who only have "straight" sex and never stray outside of it.
I can remember years ago on a dating site chatting to someone who told me they were kinky and when I asked them to expand on that said they liked to use squirty cream on their boobs and have it licked off - which to me would be vanilla with maybe a few chocolate sprinkles on top |

Someone else mentioned that. I’ve no idea how to do it. Although I do clear history and nobody touches my phone so I’m not too bothered.

To me, vanilla means passionate, straight, one-on-one primal sex with no props, fetishes, fantasies, or anything other than two naked bodies required to have a rollicking good time! It's something we can do anywhere, in any position, and preferably as often as possible!!

No, admirable to try and define it scientifically or logically, for which you may get general agreement. But the question you posed will always remain as one of passionate interest to large numbers of people, to which which there is no solid evidence of the distinction you seek. |

I'm another who wouldn't use vanilla to describe sex - it does seem to fall into casting aspersions about vanilla/non-vanilla sex being better or worse. I quite like the passionate and intimacy of "vanilla" but I also enjoy the intimacy of kinky sex. I think what it means is ever changing anyway. |

We've always taken it to mean "ordinary".
Ordinary sex is, in our case, husband and wife having regular sex with no 'extras' (whether that include toys, kink, or other people). This does not mean vanilla is bad, boring or dull. It simply means, every so often, we wish to spice it up.
