I've spotted a few threads today filled with whimsy for music, TV shows and books from childhood.
Whilst it's great to reminisce, were things from way back then actually better or is it just the soft focus of hindsight that make us think so?
What do you think is better now than it was then? Technology aside of course. |

They were better for me as I had no responsibilities. My parents, however, didn't have the best of times, although they were able to buy a 3 bedroom semi detached house for less than £40k. |

A lot of people shit on the I ternet and social media etc as they think nobody talks and interacts anymore.
I see their point but I have friends all over the world that I have either met through the Internet, or friends that have moved away but am so easily able to stay in touch with.
Not sure if it actually counts toward the point of the thread. I think it does. |

Variety available in coffee shops.
The emasculation of men.
MOT standards.
Relatively regular gas and electricity supplies that don’t turn off with random regularity.
Ease of meeting random women for casual sex.
Decimalisation.

It does, although I guess that fits into technological advances. Being able to contact people from around the globe is a fantastic thing, arguing with them about the best way to cook risotto is not so great. |

Very true. I guess the aspect of being in contact with friends more than the Internet side of it is a better way to put it.
Thinking about it I don't think overall, things are better just that the better has shifted to a different perspective.
Racism for example. It is still going strong unfortunately yet it is much better than it used to be. Many more people are accepting of others. Same goes for sexuality.
On the flip side of that strangers in general are much less approachable than what they used to be. So many are easily offended, a lot lack manners and just general everyday social skills outside of their own little gangs and cliques. |

I'm not sure there is a better era overall - and there's certainly good and bad to pick from both yesteryear and current times.
Think the reason we look to the past nostaligically and wistfully at times is thinking about a specific song, book, film etc often prompts a memory associated with it such as a person you saw the film with, or a particularly good time in your life - current things of course don't have those memories attached to them....yet!!
Not sure if modern cars count as an advancement in technology, but putting aside the multimedia systems etc they come with they're certainly better today in terms of comfort etc than they were back then - hot vinyl seats and steering wheels anyone?
I also think there's a greater variety of food available these days - my memories of 70s food was the staples, that was often bland, these days you could eat a different "nationality" food each day of the week |

Children's books is another thing that is better now than it was then - as a kid choice was limited to the classics and the staples up to the age of about 10 or 11 and then you had a jump into adult oriented fiction - these days there are no end of books aimed at all ages including teenagers. |

Hmmm given some of the output on the satellite channels I'm not totally sure more always means better.
There's certainly more on the original three channels now than there used to be - saw a link to the BBC Genome project on FB the other day where you can look at what was on BBC (TV and radio) on any day since the Radio Times began and was quite shocked at how little was actually broadcast up until about 4pm on most days even as recently as the 70s - the number of test card breaks each day was astounding and of course past midnight most days there was nothing. |

Life is ruled by being 'pc' now and far too bureaucratic but tolerance of others and reduction in prejudices has improved a lot in this country but still has a way to go. More importantly Mars bars are smaller now but winters seem warmer. |

I often think this about people who are obsessed with old cars like the Ford Escort XR3, they may have been THEE car to have back in the 90's but to me they look ugly and square now, with basic plasticky dashboards, crap seats, cheap looking interiors.
Agree with above though, 2005 was pretty cool with good technology but before the likes of Facebook. |
