A bit random but me and some friends were debating this the other night.
There’s been some fantastic actors providing wonderful performances in the role of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous sleuth over the years, but who was the best?
We eventually whittled the running down to four.
In joint second place: Peter Cushing and Ian Richardson.
Joint first prize though to.....Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett.

"Jeremy Brett 1st
Benedict Cumberbatch 2nd
Robert Downey jr last "
I'll go with this too. Jeremy Brett was so perfect for the role it's almost as though he was genetically engineered specifically for it. |

"Robert Stephens."
Great call! - I completely forgot about his brilliant portrayal until you mentioned it.
Also, another I’ve just remembered as being rather good and a little different, was Nicol Williamson’s in, The Seven Percent Solution |

Colin Blakely as Watson was absolutely first class. Especially with the Russian ballerinas! |

I enjoy the Benedict Cunberbatch and Robert Downey Jr portrayals of Holmes, but to me there is only one actor who epitomises the brilliance of Sherlock Holmes, and that's the late great Basil Rathbone |

"Jeremy Brett by considerable distance.
Ian McKellan did a good job as an older Holmes."
Whilst I sadly missed Sir Ian playing the role, I can well imagine he’d was superb.
I wonder if Patrick Stewart ever took the part? He’d make for a commanding Holmes to

The problem with Rathbone is that he was playing a very sanitised version of Holmes - too polite, no darkness in the performance, no drugs. Not his fault - the cinema at the time didn't allow for a more accurate portrayal especially in war propaganda films, but he wasn't really playing Holmes as written by Conan Doyle. |

It has to be Basil Rathbone. Nobody comes close. Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson also wins first prize. |
