On the flip side to the shitty ending thread, which film has the greatest ending in your opinion? One that fits and caps everything off and leaves you to bask in awe.
I'll start off with two classics;
Cassablanca- when he passes up on everything and makes her get on the plane.
The Shawshank Redemption- Red walking down the beach to reunite with Andy.
Over to you folks... |

"Virtually all Disney movies always go out in style (and often with a jolly old sing song to boot!)
"
Not quite what I was thinking of, but OK. Sometimes I think bittersweet endings can feel more complete rather than skipping off into the sunset. |

Usual Suspects - the last 3 minutes where you start to realise that Verbal has created the whole story from the crime board in the office and that he is Keysar Soze |

That's an impressive reaction! "
the whole film is one mind fuck and then at the very end you understand why. but it leaves you numb so you have to watch it again to understand all the signs and bits you didnt see before.
bale was excellent in it |

I suppose all the real decent classics have great ending, Casablanca has already been mentioned but how about
Taxi Driver- putting his fingers against his head
Angels with dirty faces- James Cagney breaks down on his way to the chair
Godfather Pt 2 - shooting Fredo
Apocalypse Now - completes his mission
Psycho - Norman’s smile
I could go on ... |

One that springs to mind for me is the original version of Escape from New York. One minute Donald Pleasance is taunting the gangsters as he machine guns them from the top of the wall then he is having a shave and calmly thanking his rescuers before going on live TV as if nothing were ever amiss. |

Amen sir! And the final wherein Snake switches the cassettes, leaving Donald Pleasance decidedly red faced in front of millions of TV viewers as Snake limps off tearing up the genuine one - classic! |

Ah ha! - Kurt Russell starring in and John Carpenter directing again, this time in, The Thing.
The ending, whilst not exactly happy by any means and additionally left ambiguously open as to the fate of the final two survivors was nonetheless entirely fitting and more the better for it |

its haunting, and bale lost a hell of a lot of weight dangerously playing the lead role.
you just never see whats coming until the end. then it hits you. |

The Goonies
They find the jewels and the pirate ship slips it’s moorings and sails off into the sunset.
Brings a tear to my eye every time.
And it has the Truffle Shuffle in it of course!

Great films never need sequels, often they cheapen the original...
I sense another thread! |

"Blade Runner ... particularly Roy Batty's speech
Agreed. I reference that speech all the time, especially after being in clubs...
"I've seen things that you wouldn't believe..." "
And the ending on the Final Cut version which reveals (although still disputed) that Decker is a replicant. |

Haha I'd forgotten about that bit! One more little exchange at the end is where Lee Van Cleefe's Prison Governor says something like:"We could use a guy like you Snake" and Kurt Russel's character replies:"My name is Plisskin" Turns his back and swaggers away... |

Goodfellas has a great ending. That last final 30 minutes is incredible. The frantic, laden day in the life of a paranoid mobster, ending with his eventual arrest, mental breakdown and, in the end, realisation that he'll never have that life again.
Ending with Joe Pesci firing a gun into the camera. Brilliant.
Endings are really hard to do i think. |

"Escape from NY was mentioned and I wuite like how John Carpenter films end generally. Especially The Thing.I bet the folk at spiney point are still watching out for the FOG to return "
Haha.
Oh this reminds me. The Mist has THE most depressing endings in film ever I think. It doesn't get better. |

There and to the left a bit |
Whilst I'd agree that most Disney films are cheese ridden endings - the last 15 minutes of Toy Story 3 is a rollercoaster bittersweet emotional ride that will be hard to beat in that genre |

A classic! - An prime example that cheap jump scares every other second and gore galore are not requisite in a horror film when a skilled director is behind the lens; Especially one who furthermore, can effortlessly conjure and imbue such a tangible sense of dread, atmosphere, tension and claustrophobia into a movie |

I do love The Machinist too Patrick
And also Bridges of Madison County
But for me it’s always
Leaving Las Vegas, when Sera lies with Ben waiting for him to die then sits by his body admitting her love for him |
