On the flip side to the shitty ending thread, which film has the greatest ending in your opinion? One that fits and caps everything off and leaves you to bask in awe.

I'll start off with two classics;

Cassablanca- when he passes up on everything and makes her get on the plane.

The Shawshank Redemption- Red walking down the beach to reunite with Andy.

Over to you folks...

Not quite what I was thinking of, but OK. Sometimes I think bittersweet endings can feel more complete rather than skipping off into the sunset.

I suppose all the real decent classics have great ending, Casablanca has already been mentioned but how about

Taxi Driver- putting his fingers against his head

Angels with dirty faces- James Cagney breaks down on his way to the chair

Godfather Pt 2 - shooting Fredo

Apocalypse Now - completes his mission

Psycho - Norman’s smile

I could go on ...

One that springs to mind for me is the original version of Escape from New York. One minute Donald Pleasance is taunting the gangsters as he machine guns them from the top of the wall then he is having a shave and calmly thanking his rescuers before going on live TV as if nothing were ever amiss.

Ah ha! - Kurt Russell starring in and John Carpenter directing again, this time in, The Thing.

The ending, whilst not exactly happy by any means and additionally left ambiguously open as to the fate of the final two survivors was nonetheless entirely fitting and more the better for it

its haunting, and bale lost a hell of a lot of weight dangerously playing the lead role.

Great films never need sequels, often they cheapen the original...

Goodfellas has a great ending. That last final 30 minutes is incredible. The frantic, laden day in the life of a paranoid mobster, ending with his eventual arrest, mental breakdown and, in the end, realisation that he'll never have that life again.

Ending with Joe Pesci firing a gun into the camera. Brilliant.

Endings are really hard to do i think.

A classic! - An prime example that cheap jump scares every other second and gore galore are not requisite in a horror film when a skilled director is behind the lens; Especially one who furthermore, can effortlessly conjure and imbue such a tangible sense of dread, atmosphere, tension and claustrophobia into a movie
