What would you do with a large inheritance sum?

My man has recently inherited £1.4 million (after inheritance tax) after both his grandparents passed away within 5 months of each other. Curious as to what you would do with the money. So, what would you do with it?
He was pretty financially secure before the inheritance, but to keep a consistent income coming in he's looking into buying a couple of small cottages just out the back of us for around £180k and £150k and renting them out. Just curious as to what others would do, maybe get some ideas.  |

I'm not sure what i'd do with ot to be honest. I've never had much money and am still in college. Since i met my man i let him guide my finances to where they should be. He's alot older than me so has a wiser head on his shoulders. So i just let him sort it all. |

I would divide half the money and share it between my children. I would then buy a business, perhaps a launderette.
Then I would buy a big camper van and go around the country visiting my other family members. |

Keep it to myself, but gift enough to my parents for them to pay off the mortgages and live comfortable.
Then sort out a center with training facility’s and accommodations for homeless/people down on their luck and then foster as many kids as possible where I could support and teach them good life skills etc |

So much depends on individual circumstances. What would be right for any of us wouldn't necessarily be right for him. Perhaps the best advice would be an appointment with an experienced financial advisor? ... and, in real life, to keep schtum about his inheritance. Lots of people can be very funny about money. |

When grandfather die was left a major sum,started my own business up . When it got to big sold it over to the work force an put the money I got into a trust for my son an daughter. Both are doing well in they own rights an have put money in trust for their own kids . |

Help the homeless would be a good idea. Problem is most of them are too busy begging up to get money to pay for their drug addictions. And before you try shooting me down I have actually been homeless before and know exactly what goes on. Some of them actually beg up in excess of £300 per day to feed their addiction. Some of them also actually have homes to go. Food banks and soup kitchens actually get given funds from the local council to provide food. Personally the only charities I ever donate to are connected to children with disabilities |

Typical response, even though you were homeless, I'm sorry for that, but the problem goes a lot deeper, women denied of their pensions at 60, are now some of the people on the street, ex army guys, yet we spend millions on poppies, something is very wrong, I could also tell you my story of been faced with homelessness, but I won't bore you. |

I'd buy small needed gifts for my close ones but not tell anyone and invest the money, and only pass it on when I new I was dying |

I didn’t spend a penny of the money I inherited. I haven’t spent any of it through almost a sense of guilt. It wasn’t my money and I’d much rather have the person it belonged to back. |

After my father died i inherited his farm. I had no interest in farming so sold it. I then just put the money in a savings account. I gave the two tied cottages away to the tenants before the sale. They had both worked hard for my father for many years so it felt right. I also gave them a very good redundancy payment. I gave some too my children and put some in trust for my grandchildren.
The rest is mine. Not enough to retire just yet but when i do i will have a nice old age. |

With that amount by all means treat yourselves, holiday, new car, holiday home, or whatever floats your boat.
As for the rest do not do any one thing. You must diversify your investments.
Buy to let is a good idea although you really need a good agent who will vet your tenants properly. As said by someone above there are lots of horror stories out there but (done properly) it can be quite lucrative.
The stock market can be good as well but, again, you need to tread carefully. Stick to "blue chip" shares that pay good dividends. The share price itself is always a roller coaster ride but 4 or 5% yield is out there and compared to almost non existent bank interest rated is pretty good.
At the moment I would give the bond market a wide berth, but that's not to say I wouldn't look at it again in the future.

I've always said if I had a substantial amount of money I would like to slowly build a self sufficient commune style village where everyone pitches in and works together to improve each other's lives....back to the old values but with enough modern twists to make life comfortable. |

Well first I'd spend on things I want ....teeth whitening/veneers, trip to New York,new carpet, take Mam on Orient Express, upgrade my car and general shopping spree. I would also give some to my brother and his family and to Macmillan cancer as they were good to me when I had cancer xx |

Personally I would invest some and look at opening a business of my own. You are both quite young, you need do secure your future and any possible children's future. I would be wary of property unless you know you can get a good return |

Really baffled by the amount of people offering negative opinions. Being able to handle money is one of the few things we dont get taught and having multiple suggestions from people whilst can be confusing, can also give you an idea of what to look at. We have such a negative view in this country about "how much do you earn" and people end up getting paid vastly different amounts because of the unwillingness to open up. I dont know if it's jealously but saying you have wealth but want advice isn't throwing it in the face of someone else who is less well off.
Personally id say spread out your money. Different stocks and shares isas and childrens are 20 and 10k each per annum.
Ive always wanted to get a house. See if i could rehabilitate some homeless. From documentaries ive seen it doesnt take long for people who want to work as they need a place of residence. But thats me. Property for renting. Id also continue working but you could use that money to go into some work your passionate about if you want a business. The extra free time equates to spending even more money usually.

I think you are incredibly naive to post that sort of windfall so publicly. As is your belief that your partner's build will somehow save you from scammers and con merchants. It won't.

1.We live in a small village that has no crime rate. My man has lived here his entire 38yrs and said apart from the odd kid breaking into someones shed once in a blue moon we don't get trouble here. Everyone knows everyone and it is a very peaceful, respectful place with a sense of community. That's great if you are thinking about renting places here. 2. The fact he's 6.3" Army also works for him as people respect and fear him. Like i said, we live in a small village where everyone knows everyone and he and his best friends who are also army go down the local pub. Nobody ever bothers them, they buy them beers out of respect. 3.He is intelligent and is very wise. He's hardly going to respond to an email from Major Tundy in Ghana offering to look after all his finances. lol And again, not 1 single person has tried to befriend us on Fab over this. So you were wrong about that too. And even if they did we are intelligent enough to read between the lines. |

"Really baffled by the amount of people offering negative opinions. Being able to handle money is one of the few things we dont get taught and having multiple suggestions from people whilst can be confusing, can also give you an idea of what to look at. We have such a negative view in this country about "how much do you earn" and people end up getting paid vastly different amounts because of the unwillingness to open up. I dont know if it's jealously but saying you have wealth but want advice isn't throwing it in the face of someone else who is less well off.
