Somewhere In The Ether…

The Remains Of The Day and Lost In Translation are both highly watchable examples of great character driven movies wherein essentially, nothing of particular note actually transpires.

Somewhere In The Ether…

Also, American Graffiti and to a lesser extent due to the ending - American Beauty are prime examples of fantastic movies which don’t really ‘go anywhere’.

Mine. Absolute rubbish!!

It reads "Trapped in the desert after standing on a land mine, a US Marine sniper must single-handedly fight off the enemy while waiting more than two days for a convoy to rescue him."

It was boring as hell.

Didcot

I watched Voice From the Stone the other week, billed as a Paranormal psychological thriller, it failed on all counts, nothing really happened apart from a lame twist in the story at the end, only decent thing about it was the song Speak To Me by Amy Lee which is just beautiful.

Its still utterly brilliant- no car chases, no explosions, no fight scenes, no expensive CGI....just a man on a lawn mower and a cracking script

"Phone booth. Colin Farrell in a phone box for an hour and a half. "

Thats sort of a holy grail of film directing- can you house an entire film in a single location and keep it entertaining? (it also makes production massivly cheaper in general).

Phone booth does stray from it a little- Reservoir Dogs is a similar example where most of it is set in the warehouse.

If you want to check out what can be done- hunt out Nightingale. Brilliant acting but one of the most depressing films i've ever seen.

What's the one with Ryan Reynolds in a coffin?

I suspect a lot of these of blacklist scripts that read well but don't necessarily work on screen.

Blacklist scripts don't even read well nowadays. They're just written to game the algorithm. Been a long time since it was handled by proper readers.

Would make sense as to why I'm watching films recently and thinking, I bet this was a black list script, look it up and it was.
