Somewhere In The Ether…

There’s been so many over the years and all I want you to do is name the greatest of them all (this could get heated however...)

For clarification purposes though, when I say ‘Boyband’ I’m implying those of the patented ‘Air-grab’ and ‘crotch grab’ variety (circa 1980’s to the present day) as opposed to the likes of The Beatles etc. who obviously predate the era.

Yes, I’m in fact pointing to the likes of Take Twat, Worst Life and Back Street (cleaner) Boys.

Off you go; Let battle commence!

Actually, there was a British Boyband from around the mid-late nineties who distinguished themselves from their bopping peers, by making a point of playing their own instruments on stage. All I remember was that the lead singer was blonde and that they weren’t toooo bad and had one or two quite big hits here. Any ideas anyone?

It’s a classic Christmas song.

If it was nearer Christmas I’d post a link.

"Who were the ones who did. Everybody rock your body. That one

Backstreet Boys - classic track!

I thought five for a minute and then remembered the “backstreets back alright line” "

It had a great video to and featured none other than Antonio (Huggy Bear from Starsky & Hutch) Fargas in it

"Does anyone remember the single, ‘Step By Step’ by New Kids On The Block?

That was bloody class right there especially the bit where Jordan sings as high as if he’d inadvertently locked his balls in a vice clamp....

Step by step

Oooooo baby

Gonna get to ya giiiiiiirrl

Step 1: we can have lots of fun

Step 2: there's so much we can do

Step 3: it's just you and me

Step 4: I can't remember step 4

Nor step 5.

That’s the one; The guy who sang step one was way off key to - have a listen , he’s really terrible

It was Danny that sang step 1.

Yes, I used to like them quite a lot. I liked Joe

Wasn’t step 4 I can give you more ? Something like that "

Yes!

Talking which, I remember Boyzones very first TV appearance. It was on a famous Irish TV char show. They didn’t sing a single word but merely danced and performed various groin thrusts and a curious ‘diamond’ like gesture over their crotches with their hands..... it was bloody great stuff

3. The Smiths

2. Echo and the Bunnymen

1. Felt

Was poised for brother beyond... But Felt.... Saw Lawrence earlier this year, fabulous."

A lucky man to have seen Lawrence on his travels this year.

"Lawrence of Belgravia" is due to be released properly on DVD this year. I jumped on board the Felt bus with "Something Sends Me To Sleep" 7" and remained on board for everything after that.Still got all my vinyl. I suppose they were a bit niche - but what a niche. I'm gonna go and play "Poem of the River" right now!

i was in a boy band in the 90's ... we were called The Herb Boys ... we toured the european festival circuit for a couple of years playing dub-reggae versions of spice girls songs .... it was as hilarious as it was surreal

Hiding in the shadows

In my teens, I was mad about the Pet Shop Boys, saw them in concert several times.

In my 20s Take That came along... I'll admit it, I bloody love them.

Been to 5 concerts taking my eldest son once, my youngest twice, one of which PSB where the 'support act' my baby is now a mad fan of them!

Last year watched PSB play at Brighton Pride, 20yrs adter I first saw them there.

I quite liked Blue to although felt sorry for Simon Webb who was seemingly only allocated permission to sing various ‘Hmmm’s’, ‘Uh’s’ and ‘Yeah’s’ on any given track.

No wonder he went solo in the end....whereupon he immediately sounded uncannily like the lead singer of The Lighthouse Family. Very odd indeed

"Bay City Rollers "

They were the original Boy Band. The term was first used for the Bay City Rollers.

They could actually play the instruments though whether they played on their recordings is debatable.

The Monkees would have qualified as the first except that the term was never used for them and they were manufactured to be an American equivalent of the Beatles.

Also, is it just me or did anyone else think that whenever Lee Ryan performed a solo in the group, that he pulled the sort of facial expression normally associated with forcing out a particularly stubborn shit?

Have you seen the (overpriced)box reissues of Felt albums...check out Cherry Red Records. went to a Q&A with Lawrence when the Belgravia film was released, great night with a underrated genius. I used to know his mum...
