I used to make it with hot water then milk, but then someone at work told me I was doing it wrong as the hot water can burn the coffee.

That’s correct otherwise it tastes bitter.
I boil the kettle, leave it a few minutes before pouring then milk/cream to taste  |

According to a girl in Work the milk gets added first, then coffee and water last, she says the coffee gets scorched if you don’t put the milk in first and she knows the bloody difference if you forget and just tell her you did it right. |
