If you worked out hard regularly but smoked say 5 a day you can still be athletic and fit. I've seen quite a few in shape people smoking.

They’re describing their body type as ‘athletic’, not advertising their marathon PB

Yeah I take your point. But I'd say they probably look in better shape than they actually are in reality.

Well yeah, smoking is one of the worst things you could do for your overall health. Though I think a light smoker who works out will be healthier than a couch potato who doesn't smoke.

I many ways I to agree with that idea too.

Why did I start this thread?

Agree to an extent but there are exceptions. I am an 'athletic smoker'. Agreed I don't acheive the potential I could if I didn't smoke but can still comfortably run a half marathon, out sprint 20 year olds on the football pitch, swim a couple of miles or more and bounce up mountains like a goat. Admittedly 10 years in the military helped but we are out there, and not as rare as unicorns.

Hiding in the shadows

I smoke.

I'm a personal trainer.

I teach Insanity classes, powerlift, box, cycle in endurance events, swim 5miles, paddleboard & kayak several times a week.

Pretty sure that qualifies me as athletic.

My lung function tests are better than people half my age thst have never smoked.

Professional sports people smoke!!!

Anyway, you can be athletically built without going anywhere near a gym or sports field. Some people are just built that way

I think that the athletic description relates to physical external appearance, rather than a claim of sporting prowess. If someone is looking for a shag, they're keen that their meet won't die on them, rather than a long term health prognosis. Maybe they'll share a fag.

"Professional sports people smoke!!!

Yes they are! And some of us are the exact opposite, having had to work hard for every tiny bit we have

Yeah you can smoke and be athletic, even fit, as long as its light/fairly moderate I think. I know plenty of examples.

No one denies smoking is bad and anyone's health would be better if they didn't.

But I'm also convinced a lot of people too easily just blame smoking for anything, even if its just very light and not the cause of any issues at all.

Absolutely agree someone who smokes but eats well has an otherwise good lifestyle is better off than a non smoker couch potato. I know a fairly large guy at work who goes round telling anyone who has even one smoke once in a while how they're going to die, yet he's probably more at risk than they are.

#hypocrisy!!

Damn, meant to say I'm surprised by how many recent F1 drivers have dabbled, since the last really full time smokers like Keke Rosberg and Alessandro Nannini.

Kimi Raikkonen notably.

Kamui Kobayashi got in trouble a few years ago for being seen smoking.

Nick Heidfeld says he has one with wine.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

Also possibly others like Paul di Resta and even Sebastian Vettel when he was at Toro Rosso might have been told off, but can't confirm.

I think as smoking *can* be an appetite suppressor, and the description "athletic" is a reference to body shape rather than a measure of fitness, it's perfectly reasonable that someone could be both.

No oxymoron at all. In some cases a correlation perhaps

If some men are liers and some liers are women; does it logically follow that some men are women?

I'd be willing to put a small amount that nearly a third of the Croatian football team that nearly won the world cup smoke.

I base that on the fact I've yet to ever meet a Croatian who doesn't smoke! And there all pretty fit and never been in a gym.

I’ve seen quite a few professional sports people smoking, most notable a number from a premier league football team who were on a night out celebrating a win.

Don't be silly. Someone with abs might also be dying from the a inside out. Your view on in shape really needs inspecting.

But on profiles athletic is used to describe BODY TYPE, your body can look athletic regardless of how your actual fitness is.

No idea

I smoke roll ups, I go through a pouch of baccy a week, I use filters which come in a pack of 120, so averages 17 a day.

I think people might be getting hung up in terms of the fab body shape and the actual definition of it.

Athletic to me, in terms of fab, is a general body shape and look; toned and/or muscular.

In terms of general definition it denotes a high level of personal fitness and physical ability, usually recognised through a low resting heart rate and higher muscle to body fat ratio.

Neither of these preclude people smoking by the way

To me athletic on fab alludes to the physical appearance of their body, nothing else. I don't really care if they're athletic in any other sense.
