So how often do you change the oil?
I tend to just get it done (I assume!) At my yearly service and do 10-12k a year. But some people say it should be every 3k miles, which seems a lot more frequently than I get mine done! |

Only that often if it’s a really old car, like 1960s or older. |

As a mechanic please let a garage do it..
Engines these days take specific oils and by doing it your self u may Halm the engine.
Also in a garage the service light can be reset and service book stamped which does add value to the car.
Also when the oil is being changed if the mechanic is nice he or she will give the vehicle a quick safety check.
So.
Garage.
Any mechanical questions please ask .X

Has a mechanic, my tip would be twice yearly regardless of mileage..a summer change and a winter change..we are having a hot summer at the mo the oil will become thin and will have to work harder..so if we have a very cold winter your oil is already worn out because of this hot summer..and in winter your oil works harder too .. |

A world all of his own |
It's scheduled for every 24 months but I had it done after 12 months this time as I do little mileage/short journeys. Would have done it myself but didn't have a 10l catch can so got a local indie to do it for me, think they charged £40 labour and I supplied the parts. |

Will the mechanic be impressed if you take along your own parts and say, "It's alright, a bloke on a swingers site told me this is what I need" |

3K? Old mineral based ones were good for 6K. Just stick with the recommended service intervals

Oil change intervals depend of the type of oil in a car and the car itself.
Most, but not all, modern cars use fully synthetic oil. If yours does, then every 10,000 miles would be a good starting point. A car with a larger engine running fully synthetic oil can go as long as 15,000 miles before a change is needed.
Look in the handbook, note what oil the manufacturer recommends and what the change interval is. |

It’s a type R so they are notoriously bad for oil consumption even when using the thicker grades such as 5 30 and yes, it’s cheap to do.....main dealers are hilarious with the prices they charge |

Do my daily driver at minimum twice a year, or every 8k miles. Do my weekend car every 3-4k miles as it's a built engine running high power. Am also in the trade so do all my own work. Folks please don't do your own just for the sake of saying you done it. The amount of cross thread sumo studs and incorrectly fitted parts I've had to deal with is unreal. Not to mention people not knowing how badly their tyres are worn.
Put it this way, would you dye and cut your own hair or pull your own teeth out? Leave it to the pro's that's confident and competent doing these jobs |

Erm yeah. Speaking from experience here also. And from having rebuilt various VTEC engines. Yes they consume oil, more if you VTEC it alot as it is worked off the oil pressure if memory serves me right. But shouldn't be using much in between oil changes. Also if you're changing oil every 1500 miles and having to top up in between there's definitely a problem. Changing oil at 1500 miles is a bit ludicrous but it's your car and in fairness at least it's maintained |

Yeah, I think I'll just put twice as much in, and change it half as often
Can't go wrong that way "
Depending on the car have a crack yourself. Most oil changes are drain and refill and change a filter. Can be performed quick on a lot of cars.
I've just replaced the cam shafts on my car. Many hours of labour to find out the people that sold them have removed a spring..... have to strip back down and start again. Not a happy bunny. 300zx fun. Sorry needed a rant. |

Not really, it all depends on what car you’ve got, any good garage should change the filter as well. |

Anyone who understands tribology will change oil and filter at half the "recommended" service interval.

That’s exactly why I do it, the engine spends most of its time above 6000rpm. So instead of topping up it’s simple enough to change it.
Also change the gearbox oil before the recommend timescale. And do full changes before going to race days at a drag strip etc.
Take care of them and even when given daily abuse a K20 is one of the most solid engines out there. The internals as standard are good for around 350bhp so they’re very well built. |

I drive a heavy, British-built 4x4 with a growing reputation for snapping cranks. I’d rather ‘waste’ a few pounds on extra oil changes than chance a £5k+ bill for a new engine.
Most mechanics (even reputable ones) reckon service and oil change intervals for modern cars are too long, and are more about reducing running costs to make them attractive to buyers, than keeping them in good condition. |

As per my reply..I have been a mechanic for over 30 years..I recommend twice yearly.. a winter oil change and summer oil change, regardless of mileage.. your oil works differently in hot and cold weather..it's a cheap process now to change your oil and flter, oil is one of the most important components in any engine |

Normally use ATS . It's easier for us. Normally change it every 9000 miles. We own a Renault and a Mazda. Think they are both supposed to be done every 18000 miles but I like to do it more often. |

each 12 months usually if mot comes up as car is over3years, comes with free breakdown cover at dealership, so do the full service below £200 but worth it, if you want to look after your car and dont want it to break down. |

Twice for every interval the manufacturer reccomends because after 10000+ miles (approximate interval for a lot of modern cars) the oil tends to be totally buggered. For the 30 quid it costs for oil and filter and 15 mins to change it it's worth doing a bit more regularly. Oil is cheaper than an engine rebuild. My classics get theirs done every 1500 to 3000 depending on when I can get them in the workshop. |

A full service for mine at a main dealer is £357. I got it done at an independent garage for £200. When I got the quote from the dealer I also asked how much for just brake pads (not discs not discs and pads), they wanted around £192ish fronts, £202ish for the rear. |

"each 12 months usually if mot comes up as car is over3years, comes with free breakdown cover at dealership, so do the full service below £200 but worth it, if you want to look after your car and dont want it to break down.
A full service for mine at a main dealer is £357. I got it done at an independent garage for £200. When I got the quote from the dealer I also asked how much for just brake pads (not discs not discs and pads), they wanted around £192ish fronts, £202ish for the rear.
Sweet mercy. 400 nuggets for pads. What car is that for? "
Typical dealer prices. Had my MOT at the dealer as it was on offer for £25, failed on pads and discs all round, which I already knew it would just hadn't had the time to do it.
Picked the car up and they had quoted £1475 for pads and discs all round
Did it myself for £450 with genuine Brembo parts. |

Oil lasts pretty much indefinitely, it's the contaminates that ruin it.
On some lorries they fit additional but much finer filters.
They don't ever change the oil but change the filters at the normal service intervals.
The company claim they have engines with their system on that have 100s of thousands of miles on |

"How often do you change the oil in your car?
Do you do it yourself, to take it to a garage?"
Do my own as it's an older car. Every 8k as it's got a timing chain to keep lubricated. 10k if a timing belt.
If a new car and you tend to swap it regularly it's probably best to get dealer to o it so it has a full service history and devalues less

I do mine myself and change the oil every 10,000 miles or every 12 months. Depending on what comes first.
Tend to use some form of Castrol fully synthestic or Petronas oil.

The service depends on the model and the age of the vehicle.
Some cars need a service more often than others.
Unless someone on here works for a dealer and knows what your intervals should be I would just call the dealer and ask them and they will happily tell you how many miles and what your car requires next due to age or mileage of the vehicle.

As the Americans would say "my bad", I foolishly took the advertisement at its word.
A little more research shows that the long molecules start to break down with use. |
